E7 G - Quickly, slowly, carefully – Adverbs verstehen

Mini-Beschreibung: Use common adverbs of manner to say how an action happens: quickly, slowly, carefully, quietly, loudly, well, fast and hard. Du arbeitest mit Bildern, Videos, kurzen Sätzen und kleinen Sprech- und Schreibaufgaben. Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Look first. What changes when we add an adverb?

The rabbit runs. → The rabbit runs quickly.

Try: Make one more sentence with slowly or carefully.

Deutsch-Hilfe, wenn nötig: Ein adverb of manner beschreibt, wie eine Handlung passiert.

Video action: Watch only the first part. Listen for words ending in -ly. Do not open a transcript yet. Write down two words you hear.

I can

I can ... Check
use common adverbs of manner in short sentences. ☐
form many adverbs with -ly. ☐
use well, fast and hard correctly in simple examples. ☐
describe actions in a picture, video or short situation. ☐
speak and write short connected sentences with adverbs. ☐

Vorwissen

Try first. Which word describes a person or thing? Which word describes an action?

a careful cyclist – The cyclist rides carefully.

a quick runner – The runner runs quickly.

Hint: adjective → person or thing; adverb → action.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Adjektive beschreiben oft Nomen. Adverbs of manner beschreiben hier vor allem Handlungen.

Notice: What do adverbs do?

Look and choose: The runner runs ...

quickly / quietly / carefully

More than one answer can fit a picture. Choose one and explain with one simple sentence.

Model: The runner runs quickly.

Look again. Complete:

She walks ______ because the ground is difficult.

Check after you try: carefully is a good answer.

Small word bank

adjective adverb simple example
quick quickly She finishes quickly.
slow slowly He walks slowly.
careful carefully Mia opens the box carefully.
quiet quietly Ben speaks quietly.
loud loudly The class laughs loudly.
good well Ava sings well.
fast fast Leo runs fast.
hard hard We work hard.

Chunk to remember: How does it happen? → It happens slowly / carefully / quietly ...

Understand: Form and position

Rule 1: Many adverbs of manner are made with adjective + -ly.

quick → quickly

slow → slowly

careful → carefully

quiet → quietly

Rule 2: A word ending in -y can change.

easy → easily

Rule 3: Some common words are different.

good → well

fast → fast

hard → hard

Rule 4: In simple sentences, the adverb often comes after the verb or after the object.

He walks slowly.

She closes the door carefully.

Try: Put the words in the correct order:

carefully / the glass / puts down / Sam

Check: Sam puts down the glass carefully.

Media challenge: The sign uses carefully and slowly. Are they the same? No. Carefully means with care. Slowly means at low speed. One action can be slow but not careful, or careful but not very slow.

Try: Choose the better adverb

1. The baby is sleeping. Please speak quietly / loudly.

2. The floor is wet. Walk carefully / loudly.

3. The bus is coming. We need to move quickly / quietly.

4. Noor practises every day. She works hard / hardly.

Check after you try: 1 quietly, 2 carefully, 3 quickly, 4 hard.

Important for this course: Use hard = with a lot of effort. Hardly has a different meaning and is not a target word here.

Listening and Viewing

First viewing – no transcript.

  1. Listen for four adverbs of manner.
  2. Pause when you hear an example sentence.
  3. Copy one short example pattern, but use your own person or action.

Second viewing – with support.

Word bank: slowly – quickly – carefully – quietly – loudly – well – fast – hard

Hint: Listen for the sound -ly at the end of many words.

After your first listening attempt: You may now switch on the video's captions or transcript. Compare only the words you need. Do not translate every sentence.

Check yourself: Can you explain in English what an adverb of manner does? Try: It tells us how an action happens.

Video practice: repeat and act

Video action:

  1. Watch a short part.
  2. Pause after an adverb.
  3. Repeat the word once.
  4. Act out the meaning with a safe classroom action.
  5. Say one sentence: I walk slowly. / I close the book carefully.

Privacy note: Recording your voice is optional. If you record, keep it private on your device unless your teacher gives a clear task and permission.

Reading

Read first.

Lina and Jay are preparing a class game. Lina writes the cards carefully. Jay cuts the paper slowly because the scissors are small. Then they work quickly because the lesson starts soon. Lina explains the rules clearly. Jay listens carefully. At the end, they play well together.

Try: Find five adverbs in the text.

Hint: Ask: How does the action happen?

Check after you try: carefully, slowly, quickly, clearly, carefully, well.

Mini-question: Why does Jay cut the paper slowly?

Possible answer: Because the scissors are small.

Vocabulary in context

Picture talk: Choose two adverbs for the scene.

slowly – carefully – loudly – quickly

Model: The person moves slowly. The person walks carefully.

Your turn: Change the subject and action.

The hare moves ______.

The photographer walks ______.

Pronunciation

Listen and repeat with a clear rhythm:

quick-ly

slow-ly

care-ful-ly

qui-et-ly

loud-ly

Focus: The ending -ly is usually short and light. Do not make it a very strong extra word.

Speaking goal: Be understandable. You do not need to sound like one special accent.

Try: Say these chunks slowly first, then at normal speed:

walk carefully

speak quietly

work hard

run fast

Speaking

Pair task: Action + adverb.

Student A chooses an action: walk, speak, open, close, write, draw, run, work.

Student B adds an adverb: slowly, quickly, carefully, quietly, loudly, well, fast, hard.

Model:

A: Open the book.

B: Open the book carefully.

A: Good. Now speak.

B: I speak quietly.

Support 1: Use the frame I _____ _____.

Support 2: Use the frame Please _____ _____.

Challenge: Add a reason with because.

Please walk carefully because the floor is wet.

Writing

Write 4–6 short connected sentences. Topic: Getting ready for school.

Use at least four adverbs from the word bank.

Writing frame:

In the morning, I ______ ______.

Then I ______ ______.

I ______ ______ because ______.

Before I leave, I ______ ______.

Word bank: quickly, slowly, carefully, quietly, well, fast, hard.

Check your own text:

  1. Is there a verb before each adverb?
  2. Does the adverb tell how the action happens?
  3. Did you use a full stop?
  4. Can a classmate understand your text?

AI note: If an AI tool is allowed by your teacher, use it only to check one small point, for example word order. Check the feedback yourself. Do not let AI replace your own text.

Mediation

Situation: A visitor at school reads this English note:

Please walk carefully in the hall and speak quietly near the library.

Your task: Explain the two important instructions in German. Do not translate every word.

Possible help: Was soll die Person tun? Wie soll sie es tun?

Check: Wichtig sind vorsichtiges Gehen im Flur und leises Sprechen an der Bibliothek.

Functional grammar: adjective or adverb?

What do you describe? Use Example
a person or thing adjective a careful student
an action adverb The student works carefully.

Try:

Tom is a ______ driver. → careful / carefully

Tom drives ______. → careful / carefully

Check: a careful driver; drives carefully.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Das Adjektiv steht beim Nomen. Das Adverb beschreibt hier die Handlung.

E-Ausblick – nur optional

Nicht Lernziel im G-Niveau: In einem späteren Kurs kann ein adverb auch in komplexeren Zeiten stehen, zum Beispiel: She had worked carefully before the test started. Das Past Perfect musst Du hier nicht selbst bilden.

Communicate: Mini-transfer

Scene: A school event. You help a younger student.

Give three short instructions with adverbs.

Model: Walk slowly. Carry the box carefully. Speak quietly.

Now make your own three instructions for a classroom, sports hall or library.

Feedback partner: Your partner checks only two things:

  1. Is the action clear?
  2. Does the adverb fit the action?

Then improve one sentence and use it again.

Folgekurs: E7 G - Adjectives and adverbs – describe people and actions

Extra media

Optional viewing: This BBC Learning English collection contains several short lessons about adverbs. For this course, focus only on the part about adjectives and adverbs. Stop when the language becomes too difficult.

Media strategy: First listen for familiar words. Then use captions. Last, check one unknown word. Do not translate the whole video.
