E7 G - Important words and chunks from the reader
E7 G - Important words and chunks from the reader

Mini-Beschreibung: Learn only the words and chunks you really need for understanding the reader and for communication. You work with context, listening, pictures, short dialogues and useful phrases. No complete chapter vocabulary lists.
Einleitung
This course helps you work with the reader in English. You do not need to learn every new word. Focus on words and chunks that help you understand what happens, how people feel and what they want to say.
A chunk is a group of words that often works as one useful unit, for example: I'm not sure., What do you mean? or Let's check.

Your learning path is simple:
- Notice: Find an important word or chunk.
- Understand: Use the sentence, picture and situation.
- Try: Make a first guess.
- Use: Say or write the chunk.
- Communicate: Use it in a short message or dialogue.
- Feedback: Check if your meaning is clear.
- Improve: Change one small thing.
- Use again: Use the chunk in a new situation.
English first. Try first. Use context and media. Take a hint. Use German help only if you still need it.
I can ...
After this course, you can say:
- I can find a few important words and chunks in a reader passage.
- I can guess meaning from context before I use German help.
- I can understand and use short chunks for reactions, ideas and feelings.
- I can listen for key words without understanding every word.
- I can use useful chunks in a short conversation.
- I can write a few connected sentences with a word bank.
- I can check my own learning and choose what to practise again.
Media start: What is a chunk?
Watch the short video once. Do not stop at every new word. Listen for examples of groups of words that belong together.
First try: What is the main idea?
A) Learn single words only. B) Notice groups of words that often go together. C) Translate every sentence.
Hint: Listen for the word chunks.
German help if needed: Chunks sind feste oder häufige Wortgruppen, die Du als Einheit lernen und verwenden kannst.
Vorwissen: Your reader toolbox

Before you use a dictionary, ask yourself:
- Who? Who is speaking or acting?
- Where? Where are the people?
- What happened? What changed?
- Feeling? Is someone happy, worried, angry or surprised?
- Clue? Which nearby word, picture or action helps?
Do not mark twenty words. Start with three to five useful items from a short reader passage.
Listening and Viewing

Listen or watch in two rounds.
Round 1 – gist: What is the situation? Do not use a transcript yet.
Round 2 – key chunks: Listen again. Catch one or two useful phrases.
A simple listening focus can be:
Are you okay? I'm not sure. Maybe ... Let's check. Wait a minute.
Feedback: If you understand the situation and catch one useful chunk, that is already a good first result.
Transcript rule: Use a transcript only after your first listening attempt. Then listen again and connect sound and spelling.
Reading: Important words, not every word

Use this short training scene. It is not a chapter from your reader.
Mia: Are you okay? Leo: I'm not sure. I can't find my bag. Mia: Maybe it's in the library. Leo: Good idea. Let's check. Mia: Wait a minute. What about the bench? Leo: You're right. There it is!
First, answer in English:
What is the problem? Leo cannot find his bag.
What do Mia and Leo decide to do? They decide to check.
Where is the bag at the end? It is by the bench.
Now notice the chunks:
| Chunk | What it does | Easy example |
|---|---|---|
| Are you okay? | checks how someone is | Are you okay, Ben? |
| I'm not sure. | shows uncertainty | I'm not sure. |
| Maybe ... | gives a possible idea | Maybe she's at home. |
| Let's check. | suggests an action together | Let's check the map. |
| Wait a minute. | asks for a short pause | Wait a minute. |
| What about ...? | gives another idea | What about the bus? |
| You're right. | agrees | You're right. |
German help only after your try: Are you okay? = Ist alles okay? · I'm not sure. = Ich bin nicht sicher. · Maybe = vielleicht · Let's check. = Lass uns nachsehen. · Wait a minute. = Moment mal. · What about ...? = Was ist mit ...? · You're right. = Du hast recht.
The reader filter
For every short passage in your real reader, choose only words or chunks that pass this filter:
- Meaning: Does it help you understand the action, feeling or relationship?
- Reuse: Can you use it again in another situation?
- Chunk value: Is it better to learn the whole phrase instead of one word?
Example: Instead of learning only sure, learn I'm not sure.
Vocabulary in context

Do not start with a German translation. Start with the sentence.
Reader-style example: Sam looked at the closed door. “Wait a minute. I heard a noise.”
What can Wait a minute mean here?
Try: Sam wants the others to stop for a short moment.
Hint: Look at what happens directly after the chunk.
German help if needed: „Moment mal.“
Another example:
“What do you mean?” Maya asked.
Try: Maya wants more explanation.
Hint: This chunk is useful when something is unclear.
German help if needed: „Was meinst Du?“
Small word bank for many reader situations
Learn only a few at a time.
| Situation | Useful chunk |
|---|---|
| You do not understand. | What do you mean? |
| You are uncertain. | I'm not sure. |
| You have an idea. | Maybe ... |
| You suggest something. | Let's ... |
| You agree. | You're right. |
| You react to a problem. | Oh no! |
| You need time. | Wait a minute. |
| You ask about someone. | Are you okay? |
Pronunciation: Say the chunk, not word by word

Speak in short groups. Do not try to make every word equally strong.
Try these:
I'm not SURE. What do you MEAN? Let's CHECK. Are you OKAY? Wait a MINute.
Say each chunk twice:
- slowly and clearly
- again in one smooth group
Feedback: The goal is clear speech, not accent-free speech.
You may record your voice only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them. No upload is needed.
Speaking: Use the chunks

Work with a partner or speak quietly to yourself.
A: You look worried. Are you okay? B: I'm not sure. I can't find my phone. A: Maybe it's in your bag. B: Let's check. A: Wait a minute. Is it on the desk? B: You're right!
Now change only one detail: phone → key, bag → jacket, desk → table.
Mini-transfer: Use two chunks in a new school situation.
Writing: Four useful sentences

Use this writing frame:
At first, ... Then, ... I think ... because ... In the end, ...
Word bank: worried · surprised · find · look for · help · maybe · because · so
Write four short connected sentences about a reader scene.
Feedback check:
- Can a classmate understand what happened?
- Did you use one useful chunk?
- Did you connect at least two ideas?
Change one sentence if it is not clear yet.
Functional grammar for communication
Grammar helps you use your chunks. Keep it simple.
because gives a reason: I think Leo is worried because he cannot find his bag.
so gives a result: The bag is missing, so they look for it.
but shows a contrast: He is worried, but Mia stays calm.
For a story in the past, use familiar past forms when you need them: They looked for the bag. Then they found it.
E-Ausblick – only controlled: After she had found the key, she opened the door.
The form had found can show that one past action happened before another past action. You do not need it for the main G-level tasks here.
Help ladder
Use only as much help as you need.
- Help 1: Look at the picture, action or speaker.
- Help 2: Read the sentence before and after.
- Help 3: Look at the word bank or sentence starter.
- Help 4: Use a short German meaning.
- Help 5: Check a learner dictionary.
Then return to English and use the word or chunk again.
Mini mediation
Your partner asks in German: „Warum ist Leo unruhig?“
Do not translate the whole scene. Give the key message:
Leo kann seine Tasche nicht finden. Mia hilft ihm.
Then return to English with one useful chunk:
Let's check.
Mediation means giving the important message for the situation, not translating every word.
Safe and smart media use
The pictures in this course come from Wikimedia Commons. Their file pages provide the relevant licence information.
For videos, first try listening or viewing. Use subtitles or a transcript only after the first attempt when possible.
Use fictional names and examples. Do not post private social-media data. Voice recordings are voluntary and can stay private.
If you use an AI tool for language feedback, check whether the suggestion fits your level and task. Keep your own ideas and wording. AI feedback should help you improve a text, not replace your text.
