E7 G - If … then … – Bedingungen verstehen

Mini-Beschreibung: Verstehe einfache if-Sätze über reale oder mögliche zukünftige Situationen. Du lernst kurze Alltagsbeispiele kennen und nutzt sie selbst beim Sprechen und Schreiben.

Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Lernweg: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

Wichtig: English first. Try first. Nutze Bild, Situation und bekannte Wörter. Nimm die deutsche Hilfe erst, wenn Du sie brauchst.

Look at the picture.

What may happen today?

Try: Say one short sentence with if.

Model: If it rains, I will take an umbrella.

German help if needed: Ein Teil nennt die Bedingung. Der andere Teil nennt eine mögliche Folge.

I can …

Am Ende kannst Du sagen:

  1. I can understand simple if-sentences about possible future situations.
  2. I can find the condition and the result.
  3. I can build a sentence with if + present simple and will + verb.
  4. I can speak about simple plans for school, weather and free time.
  5. I can write a few connected if-sentences with a word bank.
  6. I can check my sentence and improve it.

Vorwissen

You already know useful parts:

You know Example
present simple it rains / I finish / we have
will I will go / we will play
short forms I'll / won't

Quick try: Complete aloud.

It rains. → If it rains, …

I finish my homework. → If I finish my homework, …

Hint: The second part tells us what will happen next.

Medien-Einstieg: Picture cards

Picture card 1: Rain

See → think → say.

If it rains, I will …

Word bank: take an umbrella – stay inside – wear a jacket

Model: If it rains, I will take an umbrella.

Picture card 2: School bus

Try:

If I miss the bus, I will …

Word bank: walk – call home – take the next bus

Check: Is the situation possible? Is your result about what happens next?

Picture card 3: Homework

Try:

If I finish my homework, I will …

Word bank: relax – meet a friend – play a game – read

Picture card 4: Football

Try:

If the weather is good, we will …

Word bank: play football – go outside – meet in the park

Picture card 5: Lunch

Try:

If I am hungry, I will …

Word bank: eat my lunch – make a sandwich – have some fruit

Picture card 6: Low battery

Try:

If my battery is low, I will …

Word bank: charge my phone – use it less – ask for a charger

Safety note: Use fictional situations. Do not share private messages, accounts, phone numbers or social-media data.

Notice: What do the sentences do?

Read the pairs.

If it rains, I will take an umbrella.

If I finish my homework, I will watch a film.

If we have time, we will play football.

Each sentence has two jobs:

Part Job Example
condition What may happen? If it rains
result What will happen then? I will take an umbrella

Notice: The condition is real or possible. It is not only imagination.

German help if needed: if bedeutet hier ungefähr wenn/falls. Du musst aber nicht jeden Satz Wort für Wort übersetzen.

Understand: The simple pattern

For this course, use this clear pattern:

If + present simple, will + base verb.

If-part Result-part
If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
If I finish early, I will call you.
If we have time, we will go to the park.
If I don't understand, I will ask for help.

Important: After if, use the present simple in this pattern.

If it rains …

Not: If it will rain …

Short forms:

I will → I'll

will not → won't

One more useful form:

I will stay inside if it rains.

The meaning is the same. When the if-part comes second, you normally do not need the comma.

Try: Build sentences

Use one card from each side.

Condition Result
If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
If I miss the bus, I will take the next one.
If I finish my homework, I will relax.
If the weather is good, we will go outside.
If my battery is low, I will charge my phone.

Now change one part.

Model: If it rains, I will stay inside.

Hint 1: Start with If …

Hint 2: Use present simple in the if-part.

Hint 3: Use will + verb in the result.

German help if needed: Erst die mögliche Bedingung, dann die mögliche Folge.

Listening and Viewing

First watch: possible future situations

BBC Learning English explains the first conditional with possible future situations.

Before watching: Look at the rain picture again. Predict two words you may hear.

First watch: No transcript. No translating. Listen for if and will.

Your task:

  1. Hold up one finger when you hear the condition.
  2. Hold up two fingers when you hear the result.
  3. Write down one short chunk you understand.

Second watch: Use subtitles only if you need them.

Check after watching: The key idea is a possible future situation and its result.

German help if needed: Suche nicht jedes Wort. Höre auf if, will und bekannte Verben.

Second viewing: focus on the pattern

Viewing mission: Find one sentence with:

if + present simple → will + verb

Pause after a useful example. Say it once. Then change one word.

Example change:

If it rains, I will take an umbrella.

→ If it rains, I will stay inside.

Do not learn every detail at once. One clear pattern is enough for this G-level course.

Mini listening script

Ask a teacher or partner to read this text slowly. Do not read it before your first listening attempt.

Listening task first: Which three plans do you hear?

Sam: If it rains after school, I will go home.
Mia: If it is sunny, I will go to the park.
Sam: If I finish my homework early, I will come too.
Mia: Great. If you come, we will play basketball.

Now read the script and check.

Plans: go home in rain; go to the park in sun; play basketball if Sam comes.

Feedback: You do not need every word. Catch the situation, the if-part and the result.

Reading

Read this fictional school note.

Hi Alex,
If the weather is good tomorrow, we will meet in the park at 3.
If it rains, we will meet at the youth centre.
If you come, bring a drink.
See you!
Noor

Try first:

  1. Where will they meet if the weather is good?
  2. Where will they meet if it rains?
  3. What should Alex bring?

Check: park – youth centre – a drink.

Reading strategy: Circle if. Underline the result.

German help if needed: Suche zuerst Ort, Wetter und Handlung. Übersetze nicht die ganze Nachricht.

Vocabulary in context

Learn small chunks, not long word lists.

Chunk Useful context
if it rains weather
if it is sunny weather
if I finish school / homework
if I have time plans
if I miss the bus travel
I will go plan
I will stay plan
I will ask help
I won't go negative result

Mini-transfer: Pick two chunks and make one new sentence.

Pronunciation

For communication, being understandable is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Say these chunks in small groups:

If it rains | I'll take an umbrella.

If I finish | I'll call you.

If we have time | we'll go outside.

Focus:

  1. Make a short pause between condition and result.
  2. Say I'll as one short unit.
  3. Stress the important content words: rains, umbrella, finish, call.

Try again: First slowly. Then at a natural speed.

Recording option: A recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless you and your school have agreed on a safe place to share it. Do not upload it publicly just for this task.

Speaking

Work with a partner. Choose a picture card.

Student A starts:

If …, I will …

Student B reacts:

Me too. / I won't. / If …, I will …

Speaking frame:

If __________, I will __________.

If __________, I won't __________.

What will you do if __________?

Example:

A: If it rains, I will stay inside.

B: If it rains, I will take an umbrella and go outside.

Feedback check:

  1. Did you use if?
  2. Is the condition possible?
  3. Did you use present simple after if?
  4. Did you use will + verb in the result?
  5. Can your partner understand you?

Writing

Write four connected sentences about your next weekend.

Writing frame:

If the weather is good, I will __________.

If it rains, I will __________.

If I finish __________, I will __________.

If I have time, I will __________.

Word bank: meet – play – stay – watch – read – help – visit – go – finish – rain – sunny – homework

Check your text:

  1. One clear condition.
  2. One clear result.
  3. Present simple after if.
  4. will + verb in the result.
  5. Full stop at the end.

Improve: Change one repeated verb.

Mediation

Your fictional exchange student reads this German school message:

Wenn es morgen regnet, findet das Sporttreffen in der Halle statt. Wenn es trocken bleibt, treffen wir uns auf dem Sportplatz.

Do not translate every word.

Tell your partner the important information in simple English.

Starter:

If it rains, …

If it is dry, …

Possible solution: If it rains, the sports meeting will be inside. If it is dry, we will meet on the sports field.

Functional grammar

Grammar helps you communicate.

You use the first conditional when one possible thing depends on another possible thing.

If the weather is good, we will have a picnic.

The sentence is about a possible future situation. It is not a promise that the weather will be good.

Core pattern:

If + present simple, will + verb.

Negative result:

If it rains, we won't have a picnic.

Question:

What will you do if it rains?

For this course, these forms are enough.

Common mistakes and quick feedback

Try Better Why?
If it will rain, I will stay home. If it rains, I will stay home. Use present simple after if.
If I finish, I will to play. If I finish, I will play. Use will + base verb.
If I rain, I will take an umbrella. If it rains, I will take an umbrella. The weather is the subject here.

Feedback routine: Find one thing that works. Fix one thing. Say the improved sentence again.

A small E-level outlook – not required here

At higher levels, conditional sentences can also talk about unreal situations and look back into the past. Then you may meet forms with the past perfect.

For this G-level course: Do not learn that form now. Stay with possible future situations.

Passive voice and reported speech are not needed for this lesson.

Learning with AI and digital tools

AI can give feedback, but it should not replace your own text.

  1. Write your sentence yourself first.
  2. Ask for one small check, for example: Is my if-sentence clear?
  3. Check whether the feedback matches your learning level.
  4. Keep your own words when they are correct and clear.
  5. Do not enter private names, accounts, chats, photos or personal data.
  6. Do not send recordings or school work to external AI services without permission.

Self-Check: Can do

Mark each sentence for yourself:

Can-do Not yet With help Yes
I can find the if-part. □ □ □
I can find the result. □ □ □
I can use present simple after if. □ □ □
I can use will + verb. □ □ □
I can understand a short if-sentence when I hear it. □ □ □
I can speak about one possible future plan. □ □ □
I can improve one sentence after feedback. □ □ □

If you marked "with help": Use one picture card and the sentence frame again.

If you marked "yes": Make one new sentence without the frame.

Mini-Transfer

Use the pattern in a new situation.

Imagine tomorrow is a school day.

Choose two:

If I get up late, …

If I forget my lunch, …

If I finish school early, …

If the bus is late, …

If I don't understand the homework, …

Now say or write your own result.

Use again: Change the condition and keep the result. Then change the result and keep the condition.

Folgekurs

Next, practise more choices and short conversations with conditional clauses.

A suitable next step is: E7 G – What will you do if …? – Pläne erfragen und beantworten.

Do not move to more complex past conditionals until this basic pattern feels clear.
