Einleitung

Help a visitor! Du bist in einer Stadt, an einer Haltestelle, bei einer Veranstaltung oder in einem Geschäft. Eine englischsprachige Person braucht eine kurze Information. Du hörst zuerst zu, probierst Englisch aus und nutzt Bilder oder Hinweise. Deutsch kommt nur als Hilfe dazu, wenn Du es brauchst.

Mini-Ziel: Du kannst einfache Weg-, Zeit-, Veranstaltungs- und Einkaufsinformationen verstehen und weitergeben.

Look first: What does the sign mean? Where can a visitor get help?

I can ...

  1. I can ask: Can I help you?
  2. I can give directions: Go straight on. Turn left. It’s next to the bank.
  3. I can give time information: It starts at six o’clock.
  4. I can help with shopping: It’s ten pounds. The till is over there.
  5. I can check: Is that clear? / Do you mean the station?
  6. I can mediate: Ich kann eine kurze deutsche Information sinngemäß auf Englisch weitergeben.

Vorwissen: Quick start

Say or think one answer in English.

  1. Where is your classroom?
  2. What time does school start?
  3. Where can you buy a drink?

Try first. Nutze kurze bekannte Wörter. Ein vollständiger langer Satz ist nicht nötig.

Notice → understand → try

Media start: Find the useful information

Datei:Sun Yat Sen Historial Trail Directions.jpg

Look for 20 seconds. Do not translate everything.

  1. Find one arrow.
  2. Find one place name.
  3. Say: Go left. or Go right.

Hint: arrows = Pfeile

German help if needed: Suche nicht jedes Wort. Nimm nur die Information, die ein Besucher wirklich braucht.

Quick question: What can you probably do here?

Listening and viewing 1: Asking for directions

First viewing: no transcript. Watch and listen. Try to catch only three chunks: a place, a direction and one polite phrase.

After the first viewing:

  1. What place do you hear?
  2. Do you hear left, right or straight?
  3. Which polite question can you copy?

Second viewing: Pause after a useful sentence and say it once.

Transcript help – open only after your first listening try:

For this course, use this short model, not a full video transcript:

Visitor: Excuse me. Where is the station?

You: Go straight on. Turn left at the corner. The station is next to the café.

Visitor: Thank you.

You: You’re welcome.

Useful chunks: directions

Datei:Sun Yat Sen Historial Trail Directions.jpg
English chunk Use
Excuse me. Where is ...? ask for a place
Go straight on. move ahead
Turn left. change direction
Turn right. change direction
It’s next to ... say where something is
It’s opposite ... say what is across the street

Try: The bus stop is next to the shop.

Hint: next to = direkt neben

Pronunciation: clear, not perfect

Speak slowly enough to be understood.

  1. TURN left – stress the important direction.
  2. GO straight on – keep the words together as one chunk.
  3. NEXT to – say both words clearly.
  4. Use a friendly falling voice at the end of a direction.

Goal: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Optional: Record one sentence only for yourself and listen once. Do not upload it unless you actively choose to do so.

Understand → use

Reading: A visitor in town

Read for the answer, not for every word.

Visitor: Hi. Is there a supermarket near here?

Sam: Yes. Go straight on and turn right at the traffic lights. The supermarket is next to the bus stop.

Visitor: Is it far?

Sam: No. It’s about five minutes.

Check:

  1. What place does the visitor need?
  2. Does the visitor turn left or right?
  3. How long does it take?

Help: near here = in der Nähe; far = weit

Vocabulary in context

Datei:Norgate shopping centre sign and mall.jpg

Do not learn a long list. Use these words inside chunks:

  1. directions: turn left, turn right, go straight on
  2. time: at six o’clock, in ten minutes
  3. shopping: How much is it?, I’ll take it.
  4. event: It starts at ..., The entrance is ...
  5. politeness: Excuse me, please, thank you

Listening and viewing 2: Time

First: listen for times only.

Write or say two times you notice.

Useful model: What time does it start? It starts at half past six.

German help if needed: Bei Uhrzeiten reicht zuerst die Kerninformation: Startzeit erkennen und korrekt nennen.

Everyday situation: event information

A visitor asks about a school concert.

Visitor: Excuse me. What time does the concert start?

You: It starts at seven o’clock.

Visitor: Where is the entrance?

You: It’s next to the sports hall.

Visitor: Can I buy a ticket there?

You: Yes. Tickets are five euros.

Try with new information:

Concert → 6:30 → entrance opposite the library → ticket 4 euros.

Use the same chunks. Change only the information.

Shopping information

Datei:The Rushes Shopping Centre sign - 21 June 2026.jpg

Notice first: Which information could a visitor need in a shopping centre?

Listen for useful shopping chunks. You do not need every word.

  1. How much is it?
  2. Do you have this in a smaller size?
  3. I’ll take it.
  4. The till is over there.

Mini-dialogue:

Visitor: Excuse me. How much is this T-shirt?

You: It’s twelve pounds.

Visitor: Where can I pay?

You: The till is over there, next to the entrance.

Functional grammar

Grammar for a real purpose

Use grammar to help the visitor.

Directions: imperative

Go straight on. Turn left. Turn right.

Place: prepositions

It’s next to the café. It’s opposite the station. It’s near the entrance.

Polite help: can

Can I help you? Can you repeat that, please?

Do not build long grammar sentences. Short and correct chunks are enough.

Controlled E-look: past perfect

This is only a small look ahead.

The shop had closed before the visitor arrived.

You only need to understand the order: first the shop closed, later the visitor arrived. Do not use the past perfect in the main speaking tasks.

Communicate → feedback → improve

Speaking: Help a visitor

Work with a partner. One person is the visitor. One person gives information.

Card A – Visitor

You need:

  1. the station
  2. the start time of a concert
  3. the price of a ticket

Card B – Helper

Information:

  1. station: straight on, then left
  2. concert: 7:30
  3. ticket: 6 euros

Speaking frame:

Visitor: Excuse me. Where is ...? Helper: Go ... . Turn ... . Visitor: What time ...? Helper: It starts at ... . Visitor: How much ...? Helper: It’s ... euros.

Feedback: Did your partner understand the place, time and price? If not, say the key information again more slowly.

Mediation: German → useful English

A visitor does not need a word-for-word translation.

German information: „Der Flohmarkt beginnt um 10 Uhr. Der Eingang ist neben der Sporthalle. Getränke gibt es am Stand gegenüber.“

Your task: Give the three important pieces of information in simple English.

Writing help:

It starts at ... The entrance is ... You can get drinks ...

Possible solution after your try: It starts at ten o’clock. The entrance is next to the sports hall. You can get drinks at the stall opposite.

Writing: short visitor message

Write 3–5 connected sentences.

Situation: A visitor wants to go to a school event.

Word bank: go straight on – turn left – next to – starts at – ticket – entrance

Writing frame:

Hello. The event is ... . Go ... . The entrance is ... . It starts at ... . A ticket is ... .

Check: Is every sentence useful for the visitor?

Mini-transfer

New situation: You are at a bus stop.

Datei:Bus stop sign.jpg

A visitor asks:

Excuse me. When is the next bus to the city centre?

Information on your card: Bus 4 – 16:20 – platform B

Say one helpful answer.

Hint: The next bus is at ... It leaves from ...

Direct feedback

After a role play, use three checks:

  1. Clear? Could the visitor understand the key information?
  2. Correct? Were place, time and price correct?
  3. Polite? Did you use a phrase such as Excuse me, please or You’re welcome?

Improve one sentence and use it again.

Self-check: Can do

I can ... Yes Almost Not yet
ask what a visitor needs □ □ □
give one simple direction □ □ □
give a time □ □ □
give a price □ □ □
pass on short German information in English □ □ □

Choose one Almost item and practise it once more.

Safe media and AI use

Use fictional names and situations. Do not share private social-media data. Recordings are voluntary and can stay private. Do not upload recordings, images or texts to an external service unless you have permission and actively choose to do so.

If you use an AI tool for feedback, check whether its English fits your level. Keep your own text. AI feedback should help you improve one point, not replace your work.
