E7 G - Build vocabulary networks

Mini-Beschreibung: Du lernst neue englische Wörter nicht als lange Liste. Du ordnest wenige Wörter in word fields und einfache semantic networks. Du arbeitest mit Bild + Audio + chunk + example. Erst Englisch ausprobieren, dann Kontext und Medien nutzen, danach Hinweise und nur bei Bedarf kurze deutsche Hilfe.

Niveau: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Look at the picture. What do you notice? Point to groups, lines and key words. You do not need to understand every word.

Einleitung

A vocabulary network is a simple word map. One topic is in the middle. Related words go around it. Lines show connections.

Example: SCHOOL DAY

  1. people: teacher – classmate
  2. places: classroom – library
  3. things: timetable – project
  4. actions: practise – remember

Now add useful chunks:

during the break – go to the library – work on a project – practise new words

You learn a word together with a picture, a sound, a chunk or a short example. This helps you use the word in a real sentence.

German help if needed: Ein word field ist eine Wortgruppe zu einem Thema. Ein semantic network zeigt zusätzlich einfache Beziehungen zwischen Wörtern.

I-can-Ziele

Nach diesem aiMOOC kannst Du:

  1. I can group new words. Ich kann wenige neue Wörter nach Themen ordnen.
  2. I can connect words. Ich kann einfache Beziehungen mit Linien zeigen.
  3. I can use chunks. Ich kann Wörter in kurzen Wortgruppen nutzen.
  4. I can give an example. Ich kann ein neues Wort in einem einfachen Satz verwenden.
  5. I can explain my network. Ich kann mein Wortnetz mit kurzen englischen Sätzen erklären.
  6. I can improve my network. Ich kann nach Feedback Wörter verschieben, ergänzen oder mit einem besseren Beispiel versehen.

Vorwissen: Start with words you know

Think of the topic family. Say or write three words you already know.

Now listen to one familiar word.

Try first: What word do you hear?

Hint: It starts with fam-.

German help if needed: Du hörst das Wort family.

Now build a tiny field:

family → parent – sister – brother

Do not add ten more words. A small clear network is better than a crowded one.

Media entry: See the idea

Notice: The topic is in the middle. Related words are grouped around it.

Try: Find one group. Then say: These words belong together.

Hint: Look for words that share one idea.

Notice → understand → try

A good vocabulary network has four simple parts:

  1. topic: one clear centre
  2. word field: small groups of related words
  3. chunk: a useful group of words
  4. example: one short sentence

Model

library word field: places chunk: go to the library example: I go to the library after school.

Listening and viewing

Watch only the first short part first. Do not stop at every unknown word.

First viewing, about 0:35–2:00: What is a mind map? What is in the middle? What goes around it?

Try: Choose the best idea: A mind map connects related ideas.

Hint: Watch the board and pictures. You do not need every spoken word.

After your first try: Watch the section again. This time use the visible examples and, if needed, YouTube captions.

German help if needed: Achte beim zweiten Durchgang auf das Hauptthema und die Gruppen darum herum.

A second viewing: learn the method

The next video gives a longer explanation. For G-Niveau, watch only a short section chosen by your teacher or pause after one clear example.

Viewing task: Find one moment where words or ideas are organised instead of shown as an isolated list.

Mini-feedback: If you can point to the centre and one connected group, your first viewing goal is complete.

Reading: Maya's school network

Read once. Do not translate every word.

Maya has a small vocabulary network for her school day. In the middle she writes school. One group is people: teacher and classmate. Another group is places: classroom and library. She adds the chunk work on a project. Her example is: I work on a project with my classmate. Maya uses only a few new words. She can see the links quickly.

Try: Which four words belong to the groups people and places?

Hint: Look for persons and rooms.

German help if needed: Suche nur die Personen und Orte. Übersetze nicht den ganzen Text.

Vocabulary in context

Use this small bank. Learn the word together with its chunk or example.

Word Word field Chunk Example
classmate people with my classmate I work with my classmate.
library places go to the library We go to the library.
project things work on a project We work on a project.
break school time during the break I talk to Sam during the break.
practise actions practise new words I practise new words.
remember actions remember a word I remember the word with a picture.

Rule for this course: Six useful words are enough for the first network. Add more only when you can use the first words.

Build a simple semantic network

A semantic network shows connections between ideas. For English class, keep it simple.

SCHOOL → has → PEOPLE SCHOOL → has → PLACES PROJECT → with → CLASSMATE LIBRARY → place for → READING

Try: Add one more connection with one of these words: break – practise – project.

Hint: Use one short link: at, with, for or in.

German help if needed: Die Linie soll eine einfache Beziehung zeigen. Ein einzelnes Verbindungswort reicht.

Pronunciation: hear – repeat – use

Listen first.

The word is vocabulary.

Try: Listen twice. Clap the syllables. Then say the word once.

Use it in a chunk: new vocabulary

Use it in a sentence: This is my new vocabulary.

Important: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit. Sprich langsam und klar.

Chunks: learn words together

Do not learn only:

project

Learn:

work on a project

Do not learn only:

break

Learn:

during the break

Do not learn only:

library

Learn:

go to the library

Mini-check: Cover the chunks. Can you rebuild two of them?

Functional grammar: small patterns that help

You do not need a new grammar chapter. Use familiar structures to connect vocabulary.

I go to ... I work on ... I talk to ... I practise ... This word belongs to ... These words go together because ...

Example: Library belongs to places.

Example: Project and classmate go together because I work on a project with my classmate.

Speaking: explain your network

Work with a partner.

Round 1: 20–30 seconds

Use these starters:

My topic is ... This group is ... These words belong together. A useful chunk is ... My example is ...

Round 2: feedback

Your partner says one thing:

I understand this link. or Please show one example.

Then improve one part.

Recording option: Eine Aufnahme ist freiwillig. Wenn Du aufnimmst, speichere sie privat auf dem vereinbarten Schulgerät oder Lernsystem. Lade nichts ungefragt öffentlich hoch.

Writing: four connected sentences

Use the writing frame.

My topic is school. One group is ________. The words ________ and ________ belong together. My example is: ________.

Word bank: people – places – classmate – library – project – break – practise

Check: Do your four sentences match your network?

Mediation: explain the idea, not every word

A German-speaking classmate asks: Was ist ein vocabulary network?

Answer with simple English first:

It is a word map. Related words are in groups. Lines show connections.

If the classmate still needs help, add one short German sentence:

Es ist eine Wortkarte mit Gruppen und Verbindungen.

Do not translate the whole course.

Direct feedback: Is your network useful?

Check three things:

  1. Small: I used only a few new words.
  2. Connected: Every word has a group or link.
  3. Usable: I added a chunk or an example.

If one point is missing, improve only that point. Then use the network again.

Mini-transfer: a new topic

Create a second mini-network for free time.

Start with only four words:

friend – park – game – meet

Possible fields:

people – places – things – actions

Possible chunks:

meet a friend play a game go to the park

Transfer task: Add one example sentence of your own.

Self-check: Can do

Mark each sentence for yourself: Yes – almost – not yet.

  1. I can put words into small word fields.
  2. I can connect two words with a simple link.
  3. I can learn a word with a chunk.
  4. I can make one short example sentence.
  5. I can explain one part of my network in English.
  6. I can improve my network after feedback.

If you choose not yet, go back to one model, not to the whole course.

Optional AI check: use carefully

You may use an approved AI tool only if your school allows it.

Good use: Ask whether your own sentence is understandable for Klasse 7 G-Niveau.

Check the answer: Is the language simple enough? Does it change your meaning? Can you explain the final sentence yourself?

Do not use AI to replace your own text. Do not upload private recordings, names, profiles or personal social-media data. Use fictional examples when a profile is needed.

Follow-up course

Next, use the same words again in short communication:

E7 G - Use vocabulary in short conversations

You can also review words with retrieval practice:

  2. Chunk card: Schreibe zu zwei Wörtern je einen passenden Chunk, zum Beispiel go to the library.
  3. Listen and repeat: Höre eines der Audio-Beispiele im Kurs zweimal und sprich das Wort freiwillig nach. Notiere nur, was Dir beim Hören auffällt.
  4. One example: Wähle ein Wort aus Deinem Netz und schreibe einen kurzen, verständlichen Beispielsatz.

Standard

  1. Mini-network: Erstelle ein Netz mit sechs Wörtern zum Thema school day und verbinde mindestens drei Wortpaare sinnvoll.
  2. 30-second talk: Erkläre Dein Netz mit den Satzstartern My topic is ..., This group is ... und My example is ....
  3. Writing frame: Schreibe vier verbundene Sätze zu Deinem Wortnetz und nutze mindestens zwei Chunks.
  4. Explain the method: Erkläre einer deutschsprachigen Person mit einfachem Englisch, wie ein vocabulary network funktioniert. Nutze nur bei Bedarf einen kurzen deutschen Hilfssatz.

Schwer

  1. Compare two networks: Erstelle je ein kleines Netz zu school und free time und finde zwei Wörter oder Chunks, die sich sinnvoll verbinden lassen.

  4. Explain and react: Erkläre Dein Wortnetz in 30 Sekunden. Reagiere danach auf die Rückfrage Why do these words belong together?.
  5. Learning strategy: Vergleiche eine isolierte Vokabelliste mit einem kleinen Wortnetz. Nenne zwei Unterschiede und entscheide, welche Methode Dir bei einem konkreten Wort geholfen hat.
  6. Feedback loop: Überarbeite ein eigenes Netz nach einem Hinweis. Markiere, was Du verändert hast, und erkläre kurz, warum die neue Version verständlicher ist.

Lernnachweis

Für einen Lernnachweis zu diesem Thema ist wichtig:

  1. Du ordnest eine kleine Zahl neuer Wörter sinnvoll in word fields.
  2. Du stellst mindestens drei einfache Verbindungen zwischen Wörtern dar.
  3. Du ergänzt passende Chunks und kurze Beispielsätze.
