E7 G - Ask for clarification
E7 G - Ask for clarification

Mini-Beschreibung: Sometimes you do not understand. That is normal in a conversation. Ask for help. Use short phrases like “What do you mean?” or “Could you say that again, please?”. You can also use easy words to say the idea in a new way.
Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.
Dein Lernweg: English first → try → context/media → hint → German help if needed.
Media start: Look, listen, notice

Look at the question marks. Imagine this mini-dialogue:
A: The meeting is by the old sports hall.
B: Sorry, what do you mean by “old sports hall”?
A: The small hall next to the school garden.
B: Ah, OK. Thanks!
Notice: B does not stop the conversation. B asks a short question. A gives easier information.
First try: Watch about one minute without subtitles. Raise one finger every time you hear a phrase for asking again or asking for help.
Second try: Watch again. Now you may use subtitles. Write down only two useful phrases.
German help if needed: Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Achte zuerst nur auf Redemittel zum Nachfragen.
I can ...
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can ask someone to repeat.
- I can ask what a word or idea means.
- I can say what I understood.
- I can use an easy description when I do not know a word.
- I can keep a short conversation going.
What you already know
Try first. Do not translate everything.
Situation 1: Your partner speaks too fast. What can you say?
Situation 2: You know the word “bike”, but you do not know “helmet”. How can you describe it?
Hint: Start with: Sorry, ... / Could you ...? / It is a thing for ...
German help if needed: Überlege zuerst auf Englisch. Nutze danach nur einzelne deutsche Hilfen.
Core phrases

Use these chunks again and again:
| Situation | Useful English | Small help |
|---|---|---|
| You did not hear it. | Could you say that again, please? | say again = noch einmal sagen |
| You did not understand the idea. | What do you mean? | ask for an explanation |
| One word is new. | What does … mean? | ask about a word |
| It was too fast. | Could you speak more slowly, please? | slowly = langsam |
| You need an example. | Can you give me an example? | example = Beispiel |
| You check your idea. | Do you mean …? | check your understanding |
| You do not know a word. | It is a thing/person/place that … | describe it |
Good default phrase: Could you say that again, please?
Listening and viewing

Listen for the job of a phrase, not every word.
Round 1 – listen: No subtitles. Which job do you hear?
- ask again
- ask for an explanation
- check an idea
Round 2 – view: Watch the speaker’s face and pauses. Which phrase sounds friendly and calm?
Round 3 – support: Use subtitles only now. Find one phrase you want to use yourself.
Mini feedback: If you found the function but missed some words, that is still good listening.
Reading: A short conversation
At the school fair
Mia: We meet at the stand near the stage at four.
Ben: Sorry, what do you mean by “stand”?
Mia: A small place with a table. We sell cakes there.
Ben: OK. Do you mean the blue table near the music area?
Mia: Yes, exactly.
Ben: Great. Could you say the time again, please?
Mia: Four o’clock.
Ben: Thanks. See you there.
Try: Find three clarification phrases.
Hint 1: One asks about a word.
Hint 2: One checks an idea.
Hint 3: One asks for repetition.
German help if needed: clarification = Klärung/Nachfrage; stand = Stand.
Vocabulary in context
Do not learn long word lists. Learn the chunks in situations.
| Chunk | Use it when ... | Example |
|---|---|---|
| say that again | you did not hear | Could you say that again, please? |
| mean | you need the meaning | What do you mean? |
| more slowly | the speaker is too fast | Could you speak more slowly, please? |
| example | you need a model | Can you give me an example? |
| Do you mean ...? | you check your idea | Do you mean Friday? |
| It is a thing that ... | you do not know a word | It is a thing that keeps your head safe. |
Pronunciation: Make it clear

Goal: People understand you. You do not need a “perfect” accent.
Say these slowly first:
Could you SAY that aGAIN, please?
What do you MEAN?
Could you speak more SLOWly, please?
Then say them at a normal speed.
Tip: Stress the important word. Keep your voice friendly. A short pause before the key word can help.
Pair check: Your partner gives only one piece of feedback: clear or try once more.
Speaking: Clarification loop

Work with a partner.
Student A: Give one short message.
Student B: Ask for clarification.
Student A: Explain it again with easier words.
Student B: Check the idea.
Model:
A: Meet me by the entrance after lunch.
B: Sorry, what do you mean by “entrance”?
A: The place where you go into the building.
B: Do you mean the big door next to the office?
A: Yes.
B: Great. Thanks.
Your turn – choose one:
- school trip
- homework
- sports club
- lunch break
Help 1: Could you say that again, please?
Help 2: What do you mean by …?
Help 3: Do you mean …?
Help 4: It is a thing/place/person that …
Word rescue: Describe it
You do not know one English word? Keep speaking.
Model:
“I don’t know the word. It is a thing that you wear on your head when you ride a bike.”
Your partner can answer: “A helmet?”
Now describe:
- a locker
- a timetable
- a library
- a referee
Mini-rule: Use words you already know. Communication is more important than one missing word.
Functional grammar
You only need a small pattern.
Could you + base verb + … ?
Could you say that again?
Could you speak more slowly?
Could you explain that?
What does + word + mean?
What does “deadline” mean?
Do you mean + idea?
Do you mean Tuesday?
Notice: After could you, use the base form: say, speak, explain.
Writing: A short chat

Write a short, fictional school chat. Do not use real names or private data.
Writing frame:
A: We need to meet at ______.
B: Sorry, what do you mean by ______?
A: It is ______.
B: Do you mean ______?
A: Yes. / No, I mean ______.
B: OK. Could you say the time again, please?
A: ______.
Word bank: near – after – before – room – place – next to – at – meet – start – finish
Check: Use at least two clarification phrases.
Mediation: Help a friend
Your German-speaking friend sees this English note:
“Meet outside the science room after second break. Bring your worksheet.”
Your friend asks: “Wo genau und wann?”
Do not translate every word. Give the important information in simple German. Then say one English question your friend could ask if something is still unclear.
Possible English start: Do you mean …?
Feedback: Notice – improve – use again
After a speaking task, use this quick feedback:
| Check | Yes / Not yet |
|---|---|
| I used a clarification phrase. | |
| I stayed in English first. | |
| I used easy words when one word was missing. | |
| I checked my understanding. | |
| My partner could understand me. |
Choose one thing to improve. Then repeat the mini-dialogue.
Mini-transfer: Real-life English
Imagine you are in an English-speaking youth hostel. A staff member says:
“Breakfast is served downstairs next to reception.”
You understand breakfast, but not reception.
Try this order:
- What does “reception” mean?
- Listen to the explanation.
- Check: Do you mean the desk near the entrance?
- Say: Thanks!
This is the full communication loop: notice → ask → understand → check → continue.
Safe media and AI use
If you record your speaking, recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless your teacher has a safe school solution and you agree to share it. Do not upload recordings or personal data without permission.
If you use AI for language feedback, check the feedback. An AI suggestion can be wrong or too difficult. Keep your own text and your own ideas. Use AI to improve, not to replace your work.
Self-check: Can you do it?
Choose: Yes – Almost – Not yet
- I can say: Could you say that again, please?
- I can ask: What do you mean?
- I can ask about a word.
- I can check with: Do you mean …?
- I can describe a word with easy English.
- I can keep talking after a misunderstanding.
If you choose Not yet, go back to Core phrases and do one more speaking loop.
Next step
Your follow-up course is about checking information and keeping a conversation going. Useful next chunks are:
So, you mean …?
Let me check.
Is that right?
Do not learn many new phrases at once. Use the core phrases from this course again first.
