Listening and Viewing
Viewing 1: An authentic school project
This video was created in a U.S. school district as a student media project. It is one example, not a model for every U.S. school.
First viewing: Watch only a short part. Do not use subtitles first.
- Notice: Write down two places or objects you see.
- Understand: Is the video about school life, holidays or shopping?
- Try again: Watch the same short part again. Add one new English word.
Hint: You do not need to understand every sentence.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Achte zuerst auf Bilder, Orte und bekannte Wörter. Untertitel erst beim zweiten oder dritten Versuch nutzen.
Listening 2: Jordan speaks
Ask a teacher or partner to read the text slowly two times. Do not read the transcript first.
Task A: Listen and write three times or activities.
Task B: Listen again. Complete: First class = ... / Lunch = ... / After school = ...
Transcript – open only after listening:
Hi, I'm Jordan. I get to school at seven forty-five. My first class is science. At eleven forty, I have lunch in the cafeteria. After school, I go to art club. I go home at three fifteen.
Feedback: If you found three correct pieces of information, you understood the main message.
Reading
Read once without a dictionary.
Jordan's day
My school day starts at eight. I usually arrive early. My first class is science, and I like it because we do small experiments. At eleven forty, I eat lunch in the cafeteria. After lunch, I have Social Studies and Art. Classes finish at two oh five. On Tuesdays, I stay for art club. Then I go home.
Try:
- Find: Underline two times.
- Find: Circle two school subjects.
- Understand: Why does Jordan like science?
- Understand: What happens after classes on Tuesdays?
Hint: Look for words you already know: first, lunch, after, home.
Deutsch-Hilfe – nur wenn nötig:
arrive = ankommen
stay = bleiben
classes finish = der Unterricht endet

Writing
Write five connected sentences about Jordan or about a fictional student.

My school day starts at ...
My first class is ...
At lunch, I ...
After lunch, I ...
After school, I ...
Word bank: usually · first · then · after lunch · because · club · cafeteria · class
Feedback check: Did you use a capital letter, a full stop and at least two linking words?
Mediation
Your German-speaking friend asks:
„Wann beginnt Jordans Schultag? Wo isst Jordan? Was macht Jordan nach dem Unterricht?“
Explain the main information in German. Do not translate every English sentence.
Hint: Find the three key facts first.
Grammar for communication
Present simple for routines
Use the present simple for routines.
I arrive at 7:45.
Jordan arrives at 7:45.
I go to art club.
Jordan goes to art club.
Notice: With he / she / Jordan, the verb often gets -s.
Frequency words
Use one small word to make your sentence more exact.
I usually arrive early.
I sometimes stay after school.
I never have art club on Fridays.
Try: Write one true sentence about your own school day.
Feedback and improve
Read your text or say your answer once. Then check:
- Meaning: Is the main idea clear?
- Chunks: Did you use one useful chunk?
- Grammar: Did you check he / she + verb?
- Vocabulary: Did you use school words from this course?
- Improve: Change one sentence and use it again.
Mini-transfer
Compare Jordan's fictional day with your school day.
Model:
Jordan starts at eight. I start at ...
Jordan has lunch in a cafeteria. At my school, ...
Jordan goes to art club. After school, I ...
Important: Compare the two examples. Do not say that one school represents all schools in Germany or the USA.
Self-check: Can do
- I can understand the main idea of a short school-day text.
- I can find times and subjects.
- I can use the chunks My first class is ... and After school, I ...
- I can write five connected sentences.
- I can explain key information without translating everything.
If you can do four or five points, move on. If not, repeat one short listening or reading task.
Folgekurs: E7 G - After school and clubs
