E7 E - Understand a short authentic-style audio text
E7 E - Understand a short authentic-style audio text
Einleitung
Mini-Beschreibung: Erschließe einen einfachen, authentisch wirkenden Podcast-, Interview- oder Vlogausschnitt zu einem vertrauten Thema. Du hörst zuerst auf die Hauptidee, dann auf wichtige Details und nutzt anschließend passende Wendungen selbst.
Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, E-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Your route: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.
English first. If you get stuck: use the picture, the situation and key words first. Then take a hint. German help comes last. You do not need to understand every word.
I can
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can understand the main idea of a short podcast, interview or vlog.
- I can pick out important details such as who, where, when and why.
- I can use context when I hear an unknown word.
- I can react to what I heard and give a short opinion.
- I can make a short spoken or written response of my own.

What you already know
Think for 30 seconds:
What do you often hear in a vlog or podcast?
You may expect a greeting, a topic, questions, short reactions, informal words and an ending.
Quick try: Say three words you expect in a short audio about weekend plans.
Hint: weekend – friend – meet – sports – film – homework.
Media warm-up

Sound moves quickly. Listening works in the same way: do not stop at every unknown word. Keep listening for meaning.
Mini-listen: This free Wikimedia Commons clip is only a few seconds long. Listen for the voice and the pause.
Notice: How can a pause help you understand where one idea ends and the next begins?
Listening and viewing
Main media: hobbies and free time
The video below is an A2 listening activity with several short speakers. Work with only a short section at a time.
First listen – gist. Listen to the first speaker without stopping. Do not write full sentences.
Choose one: music – hobbies – school rules – weather
Feedback: The main topic is hobbies.
Second listen – details. Listen again. Note only two activities you hear.
Third listen – check. Use the visual information or subtitles only now if you need them.
Strategy check: Did you understand the topic before you understood every word? That is successful listening.
Authentic-style mini-podcast
This short script is designed for E7-E. It has two speakers, familiar vocabulary, contractions and a natural but clear pace. A teacher or partner can read it aloud once at about 120–135 words per minute and a second time at normal classroom pace.
Host: Hi, this is Mia from the school break podcast. Leo, what are you up to this weekend?
Leo: On Saturday morning, I’m helping at the skate park clean-up. I wasn’t sure at first, but my friend Sam is going too. After that, we’re grabbing something to eat.
Host: Nice. And Sunday?
Leo: I usually sleep late, but this Sunday we’re meeting my cousin at the sports centre. She’s new in town, so I want to show her around.
Host: Busy weekend!
Leo: A bit, yeah. But I like having one plan and some free time.
Listening rule: Do not read the script before the first listen if someone can read it aloud for you.
Gist question: What is Leo mainly talking about?
Feedback: His weekend plans.
Detail check: What does Leo do on Saturday morning? Who is new in town?
Feedback: He helps at a skate park clean-up. His cousin is new in town.
Vlog challenge: listen for the topic only
This real British Council vlog is harder than the main task. Use only the opening as a short E-level challenge. Your goal is not full understanding.
Task: Watch about the first 20–30 seconds. What is the general topic?
Hint 1: Look at the phone and the title.
Hint 2: Listen for repeated words connected with technology.
German help if needed: Es reicht, das Thema zu erkennen. Einzelne unbekannte Wörter darfst Du ignorieren.
Reading
Read this fictional follow-up message.
Maya, fictional profile: “Leo’s weekend sounds busy. I usually keep Saturday afternoon free. This week I’m meeting two friends for basketball, but if it rains, we’ll watch a film instead.”
Task: Find one similarity and one difference between Maya’s and Leo’s plans.
Feedback: Both plan to meet other people. Maya mentions basketball or a film; Leo mentions the skate park and sports centre.
Vocabulary in context
| Expression | Meaning from context | Try it |
|---|---|---|
| What are you up to? | What are you doing? | What are you up to this weekend? |
| clean-up | an activity where people make a place clean | a park clean-up |
| grab something to eat | get something to eat, informally | We can grab something to eat. |
| show someone around | show a person a place | I can show you around. |
| a bit | a little | I’m a bit tired. |
Context strategy: First ask: Is the unknown word a person, place, action or opinion? Then use the words around it.
Pronunciation and listening clues

Natural English often sounds faster because words connect.
Listen for chunks, not single words:
“What are you up to this weekend?”
“I’m helping at the skate park.”
“We’re grabbing something to eat.”
Notice: In informal speech, want to may sound shorter and going to may be reduced. You only need to recognise these forms. Clear communication matters more than sounding like a particular accent.
Try: Read one chunk naturally. Keep the important words strong and the small grammar words lighter.
Speaking
Talk for 30–45 seconds.
Prompt: What are you up to this weekend?
Include: one plan + one reason + one possible change
Example frame only if you need it:
“I’m … on Saturday because … . On Sunday, I might … . If …, I’ll … instead.”
Feedback check: Did your partner understand your plan and your reason? If yes, the message worked.
Writing
Write a short message of 45–60 words to a fictional class partner.
Your message should: say what you are doing, give one reason, ask one follow-up question.
Do not copy the model text. Use your own ideas.
Mediation
A German-speaking friend asks what Leo will do at the weekend.
Explain the three most important points in German. Do not translate every sentence.
Check: A good mediation gives the meaning that the listener needs, not every English word.
Functional grammar
Use grammar to communicate plans.
Present continuous for arranged plans: “We’re meeting my cousin on Sunday.”
because for reasons: “I’m going because my friend is going too.”
if for a possible change: “If it rains, we’ll stay inside.”
You do not need passive voice, reported speech or past perfect for this task.
Help ladder
If listening is difficult, use the next step only when you need it.
- Step 1: Listen for the topic.
- Step 2: Listen for names, places, times and activities.
- Step 3: Use the picture or video context.
- Step 4: Replay one short part.
- Step 5: Use subtitles or the script.
- Step 6: Ask for a short German hint, not a full translation.
Mini-transfer
Imagine the same people are talking about next weekend. Change one detail and say a new two-sentence version.
Example: “This weekend Leo is helping at the skate park. Next weekend he’s visiting his cousin.”
Now make your own version.
Safe and responsible media use
Use fictional names and profiles in class tasks. Do not share private social-media data.
Recordings are voluntary and can stay on your own device or in the classroom. Do not upload recordings without permission.
If you use AI for language feedback, write or speak your own version first. Check whether the feedback fits your level and meaning. AI should help you improve your work, not replace it.
Self-check
| Can-do | Yes | Almost | Not yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| I can identify the topic of a short audio. | □ | □ | □ |
| I can find two or three key details. | □ | □ | □ |
| I can keep listening when I hear an unknown word. | □ | □ | □ |
| I can react with a short opinion or plan. | □ | □ | □ |
Improve and use again: Choose one “Almost” or “Not yet” point. Repeat one short audio section and try the task again.
Next course: Give a short spoken response to an audio text
