Media lab: London

You will use one short topic so that you can focus on the skill: combining media.

Text card: London is the capital of the United Kingdom. It is a large city with many different areas, landmarks and transport connections. Visitors often use maps, photos and data to plan what they want to see.

Your job: Do not repeat every fact. Choose only what helps your message.

Picture: notice useful details

Try: Say two sentences about the picture.

Useful language: The picture shows ... / In the background, you can see ... / This image suggests ...

Better than listing: Add a reason: I chose this picture because ...

Map: find and connect places

Try: Find the River Thames and two central areas. Then explain one simple relationship.

Useful language: ... is north of ... / ... is near ... / The map shows that ...

Hint: A map gives spatial information. Do not describe colours unless the colours carry meaning.

Diagram: read the main message

Look for the main trend, not every number.

Useful language: The graph shows ... / The number rises ... / There is a clear change ... / Compared with ..., ...

Media check: A graph may show change over time. A picture usually cannot prove the same thing.

A second diagram: choose, do not overload

You do not need to explain every bar. Choose one visible pattern and say what the diagram helps you understand.

Challenge: What can this diagram tell you that the skyline photo cannot?

Listening and viewing

Watch two learners giving presentations. First watch for the main idea. On the second viewing, notice how they organise their talk.

First viewing: Which speaker is easier for you to follow? Give one concrete reason.

Second viewing: Notice one opening phrase, one way of moving to the next point and one feature of clear speaking.

German help if needed: Achte auf Aufbau und Verständlichkeit, nicht auf perfekte Aussprache.

Rule: Notes help you speak. They should not become a script that you only read aloud.

Vocabulary in context

Pronunciation: clarity first

Focus on understandable stress.

Presentation words: PRE-sen-TA-tion, IN-for-MA-tion, DI-a-gram, COM-pared, AC-cord-ing.

Try this rhythm: The MAP shows WHERE it is. The GRAPH shows HOW it changed.

Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Speaking: build a 45-second presentation

Use this simple structure:

Opening: Today I'd like to show you ...
Media point 1: The picture shows ...
Media point 2: The map tells us ...
Media point 3: According to the graph ...
Conclusion: Together, these sources show ...

Try without reading full sentences.

E-level upgrade: Add one comparison or reason: The map is more useful for location, while the graph is better for change over time.

Writing: from notes to a short script

Write 60–90 words. Use at least two different media.

Model: Today I'd like to present London using a picture, a map and a graph. The picture shows a city with famous and modern buildings. The map helps us see how central areas are connected by the River Thames. The graph adds another kind of information because it shows population change over time. Together, the media give a clearer picture than one source alone.

Improve it: Replace one general sentence with a more precise observation from a medium.

Mediation

A German classmate says: Ich verstehe die Grafik, aber ich weiß nicht, wie ich sie auf Englisch erklären soll.

Do not translate every word. Give the main message in simple English: The graph shows ... The most important change is ...

Mediation rule: Keep the meaning, choose what the listener needs, and use your own words.

Functional grammar

Use grammar to make your message clear.

Controlled E-outlook: You may meet the past perfect later when two past events need a clear order. Do not use it here unless it really helps your meaning.

After your first try, ask a partner to check only three things:

New situation: You have a school map, a photo of the playground and a small diagram about how students travel to school.

In 30 seconds, explain which two media you would use for a presentation about a better school morning and why.

Safe and responsible media use

Use class material, your own material or openly licensed media. Use fictional profiles instead of private social-media data. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless everyone has agreed to sharing. Do not upload classmates' work, voices or images to external services without permission.

If you use AI for feedback, ask for one hint or one language check. Check whether the feedback fits your E7-E level. Keep your own ideas and wording instead of replacing your text with an AI-written version.
