Mini-MOOC focus: Teen life – school clubs, weekends and plans
Target group: Klasse 7, E-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.
Course rule: English first. Try first. Use context, pictures and media. Then use a hint. German help comes only if you still need it. There is no automatic full translation.
Safety: All learner profiles in this course are fictional. Do not post private social-media data. Audio or video recordings are optional and should stay private unless your teacher has agreed on a safe school platform. Do not send your work to external AI tools unless your teacher has approved this. AI feedback may point out problems and explain them, but it should not replace your own text.
Media start – watch first: What are Neil and Georgie talking about? Do not stop at every unknown word. Catch the situation, the two speakers and at least two plans.
Einleitung
This short aiMOOC is about a familiar Year 7 topic: school life, free time, clubs and weekend plans. You will notice useful English, understand short texts and natural speech, try the language, use it in your own speaking and writing, get feedback, improve and use it again.
The topic fits the Baden-Württemberg competence area for classes 7/8 with school life, peer groups, leisure, sport and music as parts of the learner’s world. The course also practises listening/viewing, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and media competence.
Learning path: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

Listening and viewing: weekend plans
First viewing – main idea
- Who are the speakers?
- Are they talking mainly about the past, the present or the coming weekend?
- Write down two words or phrases you catch.
Second viewing – details
- Note one plan that sounds certain.
- Note one plan that sounds less certain.
- Listen for a natural reaction such as nice, really, sounds good or a similar phrase.
Quick feedback: If you understood the topic and two plans, your first viewing was successful. You do not need every word.
Listening again: what happened?
Listen for finished past actions. After watching, tell a partner three things the speakers did.
Try: Retell the weekend in three short sentences. Then add one opinion: It sounds … because …
Reading: three fictional profiles
Maya, 13: Maya joined the school media club this term. Last Friday, her group made a short audio report about the school festival. She has already learned how to plan a simple interview. This weekend, she is going to meet two friends and practise basketball.
Noah, 12: Noah likes music and drawing. He played guitar at a small school event last month, but he has never performed alone. On Saturday, he is meeting his cousin. They want to design a poster for a local youth project.
Leila, 13: Leila does not belong to a sports club, but she often cycles with friends. Last weekend, the weather was bad, so she stayed at home and finished a graphic novel. She has read three books by the same author this year. Next Sunday, she may visit a museum.
Reading task:
- Who has experience with interviews?
- Who has not performed alone?
- Who changed a plan because of the weather?
- Find one sentence about a finished past event and one sentence about an experience up to now.
- Which profile is closest to your interests? Give one reason.
Vocabulary in context
Do not learn the words as an isolated list. Use them in a sentence about a real or fictional situation.

Pronunciation: clear beats perfect
Your goal is understandable English, not accent-free English. Listen for stressed words and weaker grammar words.

Notice: The schwa /ə/ often appears in unstressed syllables and short grammar words.
Try: Say these naturally, not word by word:
- I’m going to meet a friend.
- What are you doing on Saturday?
- Have you ever joined a club?
Feedback: If your partner can understand the sentence without seeing it, communication works. Clear rhythm matters more than copying one particular accent.
Grammar for communication
Finished past: simple past
Use the simple past for a finished event at a finished time.
Last Saturday, we played a match.
I stayed at home because it rained.
Experience up to now: present perfect
Use the present perfect when the exact finished time is not the point.
I have joined two school clubs.
She has never performed alone.
Notice the contrast:
I played basketball yesterday. → finished time
I have played basketball many times. → experience up to now
Plans: going to and present continuous
Use be going to for an intention or plan.
I’m going to practise after school.
Use the present continuous for an arranged future event.
I’m meeting Sam at three.
You do not need a long rule before you speak. Choose the form that helps you communicate your plan clearly.
E-preview only: past perfect
You may sometimes meet the past perfect when one past event happened before another:
When the match started, we had already warmed up.
For this course, you only need to recognise this pattern. Do not build your main speaking or writing task around it.
Passive voice and reported speech are not introduced as new core grammar here.
Speaking
Pair talk: plan a good Saturday
Talk for about two minutes.
- Suggest one activity.
- React to your partner’s idea.
- Ask one follow-up question.
- Give one reason.
- Agree on one plan.
Useful phrases: How about …? – I’d rather … – That sounds good. – I’m not sure because … – What do you think?
Less support: Add one alternative and explain why your final choice is better for your pair.
Recording: Optional only. If you record, keep the file private unless your teacher has provided a safe school space.
Mini-presentation
Speak for 45–60 seconds about one club, hobby or weekend activity.
Include:
- what it is
- why people may enjoy it
- one personal or fictional example
- one recommendation
Peer feedback: Your partner gives one clear strength and one next step. Example: Your reason was clear. Next time, add one example.
Writing
Write a weekend message
Write about 80–100 words to a fictional exchange student.
Include:
- one thing you did last weekend
- one experience you have had
- one plan for next weekend
- one reason or contrast with because, but or so
- one question for the reader
First draft: Write without trying to make every sentence perfect.
Feedback check:
- Is the meaning clear?
- Are past events and future plans easy to follow?
- Is there at least one linking word?
- Can one sentence be made more precise?
Improve: Change at least two things after feedback. Do not replace the whole text.
AI rule: If school-approved AI feedback is allowed, ask for explanations or two specific corrections. Do not ask it to rewrite your complete text.
Mediation
Read this German school notice:
Am Freitag trifft sich die neue Medien-AG um 14:15 Uhr in Raum 204. Die Gruppe plant kurze Interviews für das Schulfest. Wer teilnehmen möchte, soll Kopfhörer mitbringen. Eigene Aufnahmen dürfen nur mit Zustimmung der beteiligten Personen gemacht werden.
A fictional exchange student understands little German. Explain the important information in simple English.
Do not translate every word. Give the purpose, time, place, what to bring and the recording rule.

Feedback and improve
Use this short loop after speaking or writing:
- Meaning: Was my message understandable?
- Language: Did I use a suitable tense and useful words?
- Interaction: Did I react, ask or connect ideas?
- Improve: Change one or two points.
- Use again: Repeat the task with a new weekend, club or partner.

Imagine a new student joins your class next week. In English, recommend one school or free-time activity and explain:
