E7 E - Conversation challenge – Speak without a full script
E7 E - Conversation challenge – Speak without a full script

Mini-description: Have a freer conversation about a familiar E7 topic. Use only a few keywords, react to your partner and use repair strategies when a word is missing.
Level: English as a first foreign language, Class 7, E level, Baden-Württemberg.
Your route: notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.
Einleitung
You do not need a full script to speak well. In this aiMOOC, you practise speaking from a small keyword card. Your goal is to keep the conversation going even when you need time, miss a word or do not understand everything.
English first: Try in English → use the context or media → take a hint → use short German help only if you still need it.
Important: Clear communication is more important than accent-free speech.

I can ...
| I can ... | Challenge |
|---|---|
| start, continue and end a familiar conversation | without reading a full script |
| react to another speaker | with a comment, reason or follow-up question |
| repair a communication problem | by asking, checking or paraphrasing |
| speak understandably | with useful stress, pauses and intonation |
| improve after feedback | and try the same skill again |
Before you start: quick check
Choose a familiar topic: hobbies, weekend plans, school life, a film or game, a class activity, food, sport or a simple travel plan.
Write only five keywords. No complete sentences.
Example: Saturday – friends – skatepark – rain – alternative
Now speak for 30 seconds. If you stop, do not restart. Use a repair phrase and continue.
Media entry: notice how speakers keep talking
Watch the British Council video above once without stopping.
First viewing: What helps the speakers keep the conversation alive?
Second viewing: Collect three useful phrases or moves. Do not copy the whole dialogue.
Hint: Listen for reactions, follow-up questions and short signals such as interest or surprise.
Deutsch-Hilfe bei Bedarf: Achte darauf, wie die Gesprächspartner aufeinander reagieren und das Gespräch weiterführen.
Listening and viewing: repair in action

This BBC Learning English clip shows how a speaker asks for clarification.
Watch with a mission: Find two moments where a speaker needs clearer information.
Then answer orally:
- Clarification: What is unclear?
- Repair strategy: Which question makes the message clearer?
- Transfer: Which phrase could you use in your next classroom conversation?
Mini-hint: You do not need every word. Listen for the communication problem and the phrase that repairs it.
Reading: a conversation without a script
Fictional situation: Maya, Leo and Sam are planning a class break activity.
Maya: We could do something outside. Maybe ... something with teams.
Leo: Do you mean a sports game?
Maya: Yes, but not football. I can't remember the word. It's a game where you throw a soft disc.
Sam: Frisbee?
Maya: Exactly. Thanks. What do you think?
Leo: I like the idea, but what if it rains?
Sam: Good point. We could have a board-game option inside.
Notice: Nobody uses a perfect script. The speakers check meaning, explain a missing word, react and add a new idea.
Vocabulary in context: your repair toolkit

| Communication problem | Try this first |
|---|---|
| You did not hear. | Sorry, could you say that again, please? |
| You are not sure about the meaning. | Do you mean ...? |
| A word is missing. | I don't know the word, but it's a thing/person/place that ... |
| Your sentence does not work. | Let me say that another way. |
| You need thinking time. | Give me a second to think. |
| You want to keep the talk moving. | What about you? / Why do you think that? |
Challenge: During one conversation, use at least two different repair or continuation strategies.
Pronunciation: understandable, not perfect

Use short chunks. Pause between ideas instead of rushing.
Could you SAY that again, please?
Do you MEAN the sports hall?
I don't know the WORD, but ...
Try the phrase first. Then listen to yourself or a partner.
Focus: stress the important word, keep the polite phrase clear and let your voice show whether you are checking, asking or reacting.
Remember: Verständlichkeit vor Akzentfreiheit.
Speaking: the no-full-script challenge

Choose one familiar topic and prepare five to seven keywords only.
| Round | Task | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Talk for about 90 seconds with a partner. | React at least twice. |
| Round 2 | Talk for about two minutes. | Use one repair strategy when needed. |
| Round 3 | Change one condition or perspective. | Adapt without writing a new script. |
Topic cards: planning a weekend activity · choosing a class event · recommending a hobby · deciding what to watch · planning a simple day trip · giving study tips.
Rule: Looking at keywords is fine. Reading complete prepared sentences is not the goal.
Speaking model: react, add, ask
A useful three-step move is:
React: That's a good point.
Add: I prefer the park because we can move around.
Ask: What do you think?
Now change the content, not the structure. Make it sound like your own conversation.
Listening to more natural interaction
This Cambridge English example has more than one speaker and longer turns.
Do not copy the test. Use it as a viewing challenge.
Notice three things: How do speakers enter the conversation? How do they respond to ideas? What happens when they need a moment to think?
E-level stretch: Compare one strong interaction move from the video with one move from your own conversation.
Functional grammar for this challenge
Grammar helps communication; it is not the main event.
| Function | Useful form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ask for detail | question word + auxiliary | Why do you like it? |
| make a suggestion | could | We could meet after lunch. |
| give a reason | because | I'd choose that because it's cheaper. |
| contrast ideas | but / however | I like it, but it may be too far. |
| talk about a past experience | past simple | I tried it last year. |
Controlled E outlook: You may notice the past perfect when one past action happened before another: I had forgotten the word, so I explained it. Recognise the idea; do not make it the focus of this speaking challenge.
Writing: write less so you can speak more
Create a keyword card, not a speech.
Topic: best place for a class afternoon
Possible notes: park – bus – cheap – weather – snacks – indoor plan
After speaking, write only three reflection sentences:
- Strength: One thing that worked.
- Repair: One strategy you used.
- Next step: One thing to improve next time.
Mediation: optional mini-challenge
A German-speaking classmate says:
„Wir treffen uns um halb drei vor der Sporthalle. Wenn es regnet, gehen wir in Raum 12. Alle sollen etwas zu trinken mitbringen.“
Explain the important information in English to a fictional exchange student.
Do not translate word for word. Pass on the meaning clearly.
Hint: time → place → rain plan → what to bring.
Help ladder
| Step | Help |
|---|---|
| 1 | Try again in English. |
| 2 | Use a repair phrase. |
| 3 | Point to the context, image or keyword. |
| 4 | Paraphrase with simpler English. |
| 5 | Ask for a short hint. |
| 6 | Use brief German help only if needed. |
Feedback: improve and use again
After Round 2, your partner gives short feedback.
| Check | Feedback starter |
|---|---|
| Conversation flow | You kept it going when ... |
| Reaction | Your best response was ... |
| Repair | A useful repair phrase was ... |
| Understandability | I understood you clearly when ... |
| Next step | Next time, try ... |
Then repeat a shorter Round 3. Change something immediately.
Mini-transfer
New partner, new condition, same skill.
Example: You planned an outdoor activity. Now the weather changes. You have 20 seconds to look at your keywords, then continue speaking.
No new full script.
Safe and responsible media use
If you record yourself, recording is voluntary and private. Do not upload recordings unless your teacher has clearly arranged a safe, agreed learning space.
Do not send private conversations, names, faces or voice recordings to external AI services without permission.
If you use AI for language feedback, check whether the suggestion matches your level and your meaning. Keep your own ideas and wording. AI feedback should support your work, not replace it.
Self-check: Can do?
| Can-do | Yes / almost / not yet |
|---|---|
| I can speak from a few keywords. | |
| I can react to my partner. | |
| I can ask for clarification. | |
| I can paraphrase when a word is missing. | |
| I can speak understandably without worrying about a perfect accent. | |
| I can use feedback and try again. |
