Listen. What could this sound start or finish: a lesson, a break or a school day?
Einleitung
In this aiMOOC, you learn to write a short report in the past. Your report tells what happened, when it happened and how you felt. You work in this order: notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.
Important: All names, places and dates in this course are fictional. Recordings are optional and should stay private. Do not upload personal recordings, photos or texts without permission. If you use AI for help, check the result and write the final text in your own words.
I can ...
- I can understand a short report about a past event.
- I can use simple time phrases such as last Friday, at nine o'clock, then and in the afternoon.
- I can use common past-tense verbs such as went, saw, played and visited.
- I can write a short connected report of about 6–8 sentences.
- I can read my report aloud so that other people can understand me.
Quick check: What do you already know?
Try English first.
- What is the past form of play?
- What is the past form of go?
- Which phrase is about the past: last Saturday or next Saturday?
- Put these words into a sentence: we – visited – a museum.
Hint
Regular verbs often end in -ed. Some common verbs have a different past form.
Deutsch
Regelmäßige Verben haben im Simple Past oft die Endung -ed. Häufige unregelmäßige Verben musst Du als Form lernen.
Example and solution
played – went – last Saturday – We visited a museum.
Notice: A short report
Read the report.
Last Friday, our class visited Green Hill Park. We left school at 8:15. First, we travelled by bus. At 9:00, we arrived at the park. We walked to a small lake and took photos. Then we ate lunch. In the afternoon, we played a team game. At 2:30, we went back to school. I liked the trip because it was fun and relaxing.
Notice: The report gives a clear order. It uses past verbs and time phrases.
Find the clues
Find these things in the report:
- one phrase with last
- two exact times
- two regular past verbs
- two irregular past verbs
- one sentence with because
Hint
Look for words that tell you when and verbs that tell you what happened.
Deutsch
Suche Zeitangaben und Verben in der Vergangenheit. Regelmäßige Formen enden oft auf -ed.
Solution
Examples: last Friday; 8:15, 9:00, 2:30; visited, travelled, arrived, walked, played, liked; left, took, ate, went; because it was fun and relaxing.
Understand: How does the report work?

A short report can follow this simple pattern:
- Start: When and where? – Last Friday, our class visited ...
- Order: What happened first, then and later?
- Details: Add simple times or places.
- End: Give one short opinion or feeling.
Useful time phrases: yesterday, last Friday, at nine o'clock, first, then, later, in the afternoon, finally.
Useful past forms: visited, played, walked, travelled, went, saw, had, ate, took, left.
Grammar in action: simple past
Use the simple past for finished actions in the past.
We visited the park. We went by bus. We did not stay late. Did you like the trip?
With did or didn't, use the basic verb: Did you like ...? / We didn't stay ...
Deutsch
Das Simple Past beschreibt hier abgeschlossene Handlungen in der Vergangenheit. Nach did und didn't steht das Verb in der Grundform.
Watch selectively: Notice regular past forms. You do not need to understand every word.
Watch selectively: Listen for a few irregular past forms. Write down two forms you recognize.
Practise: Vocabulary in context
Complete the ideas orally.
- We arrived at ...
- We visited ...
- We played ...
- We ate ...
- We took ...
- We went back ...
Try English first.
Hint
Use places, food, games or objects that fit a school trip.
Deutsch
Ergänze passende Orte, Speisen, Spiele oder Gegenstände. Es gibt mehrere richtige Möglichkeiten.
Pronunciation: -ed endings
Listen and say the words slowly:
watched – played – visited
The ending can sound different. Focus on clear speech, not on sounding like a native speaker.
- watched → short ending
- played → voiced ending
- visited → extra syllable
Mini speaking task: Say: We visited the park and played a game.
Use: Speak before you write

Tell a partner about a fictional school event. Use 4–5 sentences.
Speaking frame:
Last ______, we ______. First, we ______. Then, we ______. At ______, we ______. I liked / didn't like it because ______.
Deutsch
Erfinde die Daten. Du musst keine echten privaten Erlebnisse erzählen.
Reading: Another mini report
Yesterday, Class 6B had a sports morning. We met in the gym at 8:30. First, we played a ball game. Then we ran a short relay race. At 10:15, we had a break and drank water. After the break, we tried a team challenge. The event finished at 12:00. I enjoyed the morning because our team worked well together.
Quick questions: Where did the class meet? What happened after the ball game? Why did the writer enjoy the morning?
Solution
They met in the gym. Then they ran a short relay race. The writer enjoyed the morning because the team worked well together.
Writing task: Your short report
Write 6–8 connected sentences about one fictional topic:
- a school trip
- a special school day
- a sports or music event
Use at least three time phrases and four past-tense verbs.
Plan: When? → Where? → First? → Then? → Later? → End? → Your opinion?
Hint
Start with Last .... Use First, Then and Finally. End with I liked ... because ....
Deutsch
Schreibe einen kurzen Bericht mit erfundenen Angaben. Achte vor allem auf eine verständliche Reihenfolge, einfache Vergangenheitsformen und passende Zeitangaben.
Example
Last Tuesday, our class visited River Museum. We left school at 9:00. First, we walked through an exhibition. Then we did a quiz. At 11:30, we ate lunch outside. Later, we bought postcards. We returned to school at 2:00. I liked the trip because the quiz was fun.
Feedback: Check your report
Use this short checklist.
- Did I say when the event happened?
- Did I use a clear order?
- Did I use simple past forms?
- Did I add time phrases?
- Is my report easy to understand?
- Did I check capital letters and full stops?
Peer feedback: Give one star and one tip: I liked ... / You can improve ...
Use again: Improve one part
Rewrite two sentences from your report.
Before: We go to the park. We play football. After: We went to the park. Then we played football.
