Quick thought: The English word information is easy to understand if you know German Information. Similar words can help you read faster.

Now listen to two English words.

Do you know these words? Do not translate them only because they look like German words.

Media task: Watch a short part of the video. Listen for the idea of false cognates or false friends. You do not need to understand every word.

Notice: Words that can help

English and German are related languages. Some words have a shared history and still look or sound similar. These words can be cognates. Other useful words are international words that you may know from German, French, Spanish, Italian or another language.

Understand: False friends

A false friend looks or sounds similar to a word you know, but the meaning is different.

In English, a gift is a present. German Gift means poison. The sign gift shop means a shop where you can buy presents.

German help

Im Englischen ist ein chef ein professioneller Koch oder eine professionelle Köchin. Ein deutscher Chef oder eine Chefin ist auf Englisch zum Beispiel a boss oder a manager.

Example: Maya gets a package. She does not become a package. She becomes happy when she opens it.

German help

English become = werden. Deutsch bekommen = English get oder receive.

Read: A short story

At the museum shop

Lina and Ben are on a school trip. They visit a small museum. At the end, they see a gift shop. Lina says, “Oh, a gift shop! I want to buy a postcard for my brother.”

Ben looks at a poster near the café. “The chef is making sandwiches today,” he reads. “Good! I am hungry.”

Lina laughs. “Be careful! In English, chef does not mean the same as German Chef.”

Ben smiles. “Right. And a gift is not German Gift. Similar words can help, but we must check the context.”

Use the sentence around the word.

Rule: First look at the familiar word. Then read the whole sentence. Finally, check: Does my guess make sense?

Pronunciation: Clear English

Listen again.

Say each word slowly, then in a short sentence:

gift → This gift is for you.

become → The sky becomes dark.

Pronunciation goal: Speak clearly. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Hint

Copy the rhythm of the whole sentence. Do not worry about a perfect accent.

Speak: Use the strategy

Work with a partner.

Student A reads a sentence with one difficult word. Student B says:

“I think it means … because …”

Then switch roles.

Example:

A: “The chef is making tomato soup.”

B: “I think chef means cook because the person is making soup.”

Your German-speaking friend sees the sign Gift Shop and is confused.

Explain the sign in simple German. Then explain one more English false friend from this lesson.

Model: “Gift shop bedeutet Geschenkeladen. Das englische gift heißt Geschenk und nicht Gift.”

Remember: In mediation, give the important meaning. You do not need a word-for-word translation.
