Picture input: predict the story

Look at the blue notebook. Make two predictions:

1. Where could someone find it?
2. Why could it be important?

Useful language: Maybe ... / I think ... / Perhaps ...

The story is fictional. Names and events are invented for learning.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mia had ten minutes before her bus. She went to the school library to return a comic. Near the door, she saw a small blue notebook under a chair. On the first page, there was no name. There was only one sentence: “Please don’t lose our ideas!”

Mia opened the notebook. It had drawings of a robot, a tree house and a tiny café. She wanted to know who owned it, but she did not read every page. At the help desk, Mr Reed said, “Maybe someone from the art club left it here.” The art club met in Room 12.

Mia walked to Room 12. The door was open, and Ben stood beside a box of pencils. When he saw the notebook, his face changed. “You found it!” he said. “My sister and I use it for story ideas. I thought it was gone.”

Mia gave him the notebook. Ben smiled and showed her one safe page: a drawing of a robot in a library. “This could be our next story,” he said. Mia looked at the bus clock. She missed her bus, but she did not mind. Ben’s dad offered to drive her home, and Mia had a new story idea too.

First reading: get the big picture

Do not stop at every new word.

1. Who is the story mostly about?
2. Where does Mia find the notebook?
3. What is the main problem?
4. How is the problem solved?

Hint Look for names, places and actions that happen more than once.

Solution The story is mostly about Mia. She finds a blue notebook in the school library. She wants to find the owner. The notebook belongs to Ben and his sister, and Mia gives it back.

Vocabulary in context

Try to understand the bold words from the sentence first.

1. return: Mia goes to the library to return a comic.
2. under: The notebook is under a chair.
3. owner: Mia wants to find the person who owns the notebook.
4. left: Someone left the notebook in the library.
5. found: Ben says, “You found it!”
6. miss a bus: Mia is too late for her bus.
7. offer: Ben’s dad offers to drive Mia home.
8. idea: Mia gets a new story idea.

Notice language in the story

The story tells finished events. Notice these forms: went, saw, opened, said, found, gave, smiled, missed.

Do one thing only: choose three verbs and use them in three short sentences about Mia.

Example: Mia found a notebook.

This is grammar for communication. You do not need a long rule table here.

Pronunciation: clear is the goal

Practise these words from the story:

1. library: stress the first syllable.
2. notebook: stress the first part.
3. found: the vowel sounds like the vowel in “sound”.
4. story: keep both syllables clear.
5. pencils: say the ending softly but clearly.

Read one paragraph aloud. Focus on meaning, pauses and clear words. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Recording is optional. If you record yourself, keep the file private unless your teacher gives a safe school-approved place. Do not upload your voice to an external service just for this task.

Second reading: key events

Put these events in the correct order in your notebook:

1. Mia goes to the library.
2. Mia finds a blue notebook.
3. Mr Reed gives her a clue.
4. Mia goes to Room 12.
5. Ben recognises the notebook.
6. Mia gives the notebook back.
7. Mia misses her bus but gets a ride home.

Now connect the events with: first, then, after that, finally.

Speaking

Tell the story to a partner in 30–45 seconds.

Ask one follow-up question: Why do you think Mia did not read every page?

Short writing output

Write 5–7 connected sentences. Choose one task:

1. Write Mia’s short message to a friend after the event.
2. Write Ben’s short message to his sister.
3. Write a new final sentence for the story.

Use at least three words from the vocabulary section and one connector such as then, because, but.

Example Hi Sam, I found a blue notebook in the library. Then I looked for the owner. Mr Reed gave me a clue, and I found Ben in Room 12. I missed my bus, but I got home safely.

Sprachmittlung: optional

A German-speaking classmate asks what happened. Explain in two or three German sentences what Mia found, where she went and how the problem ended. Do not translate the whole story.

Media: read and listen again

Read the story once more without opening the German help. Mark only three key words per paragraph.
