E6 M - Practise difficult sound contrasts helps you hear and say a few difficult English sounds with words you already know. The goal is clear, understandable English – not an accent-free voice.

Mini-description: Practise selected sounds and sound contrasts with familiar vocabulary. Listen, notice, practise, use the sounds in short dialogues, get feedback and use them again.

This course is for English as a first foreign language, Klasse 6, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. It follows the idea that familiar words should be pronounced clearly enough to be understood. A German accent is okay if communication works. Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg: Aussprache und Intonation

Before you start: quick check

Say these words quietly or with a partner: three – tree – ship – sheep – think – sit – seat.

Ask yourself: Which words are easy? Which two words sound almost the same to you?

No recording is needed. If you record yourself, do it only if you want to and keep the file private unless your teacher gives a different safe instruction.

Notice: two useful contrasts

Contrast A: th and t

In three and think, the first sound is /θ/. Put the tip of your tongue lightly between your teeth. Let air move out. Do not bite your tongue.

In tree and tank, the /t/ sound is made behind the upper teeth. Your tongue is not between the teeth.

Notice: English spelling can be tricky. The letters th can also sound different in common words such as this and that. Today, your main speaking focus is the /θ/ sound in familiar words such as three, think and thank.

Try it: three – tree – three – tree
Hint: Can you see a tiny part of your tongue for three?

Solution check

For three, use the tongue-between-teeth sound /θ/. For tree, start with /t/.

Contrast B: /ɪ/ and /iː/

Listen again to ship and sheep. The vowel sounds are different. In our model, ship has /ɪ/ and sheep has /iː/. Do not focus only on “short” and “long”. Listen to the whole vowel quality.

You do not need to learn this chart. Find only /ɪ/ and /iː/ if you can.

Try it: ship – sheep – ship – sheep
Hint: Keep the two vowel sounds clearly different.

Different English voices

The Commons audio above uses US English. The BBC video uses British English. You may hear small differences. Both can be useful models.

Key idea: You do not need to copy one accent perfectly. Speak so that other people understand your words.

Mouth practice: th

Use a mirror only if you want to.

Say three slowly.
Say think slowly.
Say thank you naturally.
Say the short sentence: I think three is right.

Feedback question: Was the word understandable? That is more important than sounding “native”.

Ear practice: ship or sheep?

Ask a partner to choose one word from each pair and say it. You point to the word you hear.

Rhythm and sentence use

Say the sentences in one smooth line. Stress the important word.

I can see THREE sheep.
I can see a SHIP.
I THINK it is right.

Do not turn this into an accent test. The sentence should be easy to follow.

Use: speaking, reading and writing

Speaking: information gap

Partner A chooses one sentence. Partner B listens and points to the matching picture or writes the key word.

Sentence set:
I can see three trees.
I can see three sheep.
I can see a ship.
I think the sheep are near the tree.

Then swap roles. Ask a real follow-up question: Where? or How many?

Reading aloud

Read this short text. First read silently, then aloud.

At the farm

It is three o'clock. Mia and Noah are near a tree. They can see three sheep. Far away, they can also see a ship. “I think this is a good place,” says Mia. Noah smiles: “Yes. The sheep are quiet, and the view is great.”

Reading focus: Make three, think, ship and sheep easy to understand.

Short writing output

Write 4–5 connected sentences about an imaginary picture. Use at least three words from this box:

Try English first. Connect ideas with and, but or because if useful.

German help

Schreibe einen Mini-Text zu einem erfundenen Bild. Nutze bekannte Wörter. Du brauchst keine neue Grammatik.

Optional mediation

A new classmate does not understand the mouth tip for three. Explain the tip briefly in German. Then give one English example word.

Goal: Help the person understand the task. Do not translate the whole course.
