Einleitung

How well can you use English already? In this short diagnostic aiMOOC you check your skills in listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The tasks fit Klasse 6, M-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache in Baden-Württemberg. Work mainly in English. Use German only when you need help.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Media start: Look at the classroom picture for 20 seconds. Say three English words or one short sentence about what you can see.

Give yourself one point for every statement that is often true.

Diagnostic stations

Station 1: Listening

Try English first. Ask a partner or teacher to read this text aloud twice. Do not read it yourself before listening.

Hi, this is Jamie. Our class trip starts on Friday at eight fifteen. Please meet at the school gate at eight o’clock. Bring a drink, a sandwich and a rain jacket. We come back at half past four. Don’t bring computer games because we have activities outside.

Answer without looking at the text:

2. Name two things Jamie says students should bring.

Station 2: Reading

Read once for the main idea. Read again for details.

On Tuesday, Alex has a busy afternoon. School finishes at 1:10. Alex usually walks home with Noor, but today they stay at school for the science club. At 3:30, Alex takes the bus home. After a snack, Alex feeds the family’s rabbit and finishes a history poster. In the evening, Alex wants to play an online game, but first there is a short English homework task.

Station 3: Speaking

Speak for about 30–45 seconds.

Task: Tell a partner about a good school day. Include:

1. when it starts,
2. one subject or activity,
3. one person you talk to,
4. what you do after school.

Try to connect ideas with and, but, because, then.

Speaking score: 2 = You speak in several connected sentences and are easy to understand. 1 = You communicate the main ideas with pauses or some sentence fragments. 0 = You still need strong support to form the message.

Recording is optional. A live partner talk is enough.

Station 4: Writing

Write a short email of about 50–70 words.

Situation: Your fictional friend Taylor missed school. Write:

1. what happened in class,
2. what homework there is,
3. one friendly question.

Use a greeting, 4–6 connected sentences and a closing.

Writing score: 2 = The message is complete, connected and mostly clear. 1 = The main information is clear, but parts are missing or hard to follow. 0 = You need a model or sentence starters for most of the text.

Station 5: Mediation

Situation: A German notice says:

Die Sport-AG fällt heute aus. Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler sollen um 14:10 Uhr am Haupteingang abgeholt werden. Das Training findet wieder nächsten Dienstag statt.

Your English-speaking fictional friend Casey asks: “What do I need to know?”

Give the important information in simple English. Do not translate every word.

Think: What is cancelled? Where and when? When is the next session?

Focus on clear word endings, understandable rhythm and the two common th sounds. Your goal is being understood, not sounding like a native speaker.
