E6 M - Getting around a British city

Mini-Beschreibung: Nutze einen vereinfachten Stadtplan, Fahrplan und kurze Hinweise, um Wege und Treffpunkte zu verstehen.

This course is for English as a first foreign language, class 6, M level, Baden-Württemberg. Cities in the UK are different from one another. Bridgemere is fictional and is only a practice setting.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

All map names, routes and timetable times in the tasks are fictional. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private. Do not upload personal recordings or schoolwork unless your teacher asks you to. Do not send course material to external AI tools without permission. If AI is allowed, check the result and write the final answer in your own words.

Quick media start

Try English first: What can you see? Name three things. Where could this bus take you?

Hint: I can see a … / The bus is in …

Deutsch-Hilfe: Nenne zuerst nur Dinge, die du wirklich im Bild erkennst. Du musst nicht jedes Wort kennen.

Notice: A British bus stop can show the stop name, route numbers and the direction of travel.

Audio input: Listen once. What kind of city situation could this sound belong to? Compare your idea with a partner. The sound is not a speaking model; it is a real-world listening clue.

Video task: Watch a short part of the BBC Learning English video. Listen for phrases for asking and giving directions. Stop after you have heard two useful phrases.

I-can goals

By the end, you can say:

  1. I can find places on a simple city map.
  2. I can read a short bus timetable.
  3. I can ask for directions politely.
  4. I can give a short route with go straight on, turn left/right, go past.
  5. I can understand and say a meeting place and time.
  6. I can write a short message with a route and meeting point.

Before you start: quick check

Answer in short English.

  1. Where is your nearest bus stop?
  2. What does turn left mean?
  3. What is a station?
  4. Say one polite question you can use when you need help.

Hint: Start with words you know. A complete sentence is good, but one correct phrase is enough for the first try.

Notice: signs and places

Useful places: station, bus stop, museum, library, park, café, cinema, sports centre, market, town square.

Useful position words: next to, opposite, between, on the left, on the right.

Useful route phrases: go straight on, turn left, turn right, go past, cross the road, get on, get off.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Nutze die Wörter als Bausteine. Beispiel: The museum is opposite the café. Du brauchst keine wortwörtliche Übersetzung des ganzen Satzes.

Understand: the fictional city of Bridgemere

Map: Bridgemere city centre

Park ← King Street → Museum ← King Street → Station
↑ Park Lane ↓ ↑ Queen Street ↓ ↑ Station Road ↓
Library ← Market Street → Town Square ← Market Street → Bus Stop A
↑ Park Lane ↓ ↑ Queen Street ↓ ↑ Station Road ↓
Café ← River Road → Cinema ← River Road → Sports Centre

Read the map:

  1. The museum is between the park and the station.
  2. The town square is opposite the museum.
  3. Bus Stop A is next to the town square.
  4. The café is opposite the library.

Try English first: You are at the station. How do you get to the town square?

Hint: Start with Go … Station Road.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Gehe vom Bahnhof auf der Station Road nach unten. Der Treffpunkt liegt dann links von dir.

Example: Go straight on. Then turn left into Market Street.

Solution: Go straight on along Station Road. Turn left into Market Street. The town square is on your left.

Understand: a short bus timetable

Bridgemere Bus 6 — fictional timetable

Stop Bus A Bus B Bus C
Station 09:10 09:30 09:50
Town Square 09:16 09:36 09:56
Museum 09:20 09:40 10:00
Park 09:25 09:45 10:05

Meeting problem: You are at the station. Your group meets at the museum at 09:42. Which bus can you take if you want to arrive before the meeting?

Hint: Look at the Museum row. Find a time before 09:42.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Suche zuerst die Zeile Museum. Wähle dann die Fahrt, die nach deinem Start möglich ist und vor 09:42 ankommt.

Solution: Take Bus B at 09:30. It arrives at the museum at 09:40.

Practise: a short dialogue

Tourist: Excuse me. How do I get to the museum?
Local: Go straight on along Station Road. Turn left into King Street.
Tourist: Sorry, left into King Street?
Local: Yes. Go past the station entrance. The museum is on your left.
Tourist: Is it far?
Local: No. It is about five minutes from here.
Tourist: Thanks a lot!
Local: You’re welcome.

Notice the communication: The tourist asks politely, checks one detail and thanks the local. The local uses short route steps.

Pronunciation: clear is the goal

Say the chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

  1. EXcuse me.
  2. Go STRAIGHT on.
  3. Turn LEFT.
  4. Turn RIGHT.
  5. It’s OPposite the museum.

Focus: Make the key word clear. You do not need to sound like a native speaker. Being understandable is more important than copying an accent.

Hint: Point left or right while you speak. Movement helps you remember the phrase.

Speaking: ask, check, respond

Work with a partner.

Student A: Start at the café. Ask for the way to the station.
Student B: Use the map. Give 3–4 short route steps.
Student A: Ask one checking question: Sorry, do I turn left at the town square?
Student B: Answer and correct the route if needed.

Then swap roles.

Optional private recording: You may record one route on your own device to listen to yourself. Do not upload it. Delete it when you no longer need it.

Reading: meeting in Bridgemere

Message from Mia

Hi Sam,
Let’s meet at the town square at 10:15. I’m coming from the station. I’ll take Bus 6 and get off at Bus Stop A. The town square is next to the bus stop. If I’m late, wait by the library side of the square.
See you,
Mia

Questions:

  1. Where do Mia and Sam meet?
  2. What time do they meet?
  3. Which bus does Mia take?
  4. Where does she get off?
  5. Where should Sam wait if Mia is late?

Solution: They meet at the town square at 10:15. Mia takes Bus 6 and gets off at Bus Stop A. Sam should wait by the library side of the square.

Writing: a short city message

Write 4–6 connected sentences to a friend. Include:

  1. a meeting place
  2. a meeting time
  3. one bus or walking route
  4. at least two direction phrases

Example start: Hi Alex, let’s meet at the museum at 11:00. From the station, …

Hint: Use this order: meeting → start point → route → final place.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Schreibe nicht Satz für Satz auf Deutsch vor. Nutze die englischen Bausteine aus Karte, Fahrplan und Dialog.

Model solution: Hi Alex, let’s meet at the museum at 11:00. From the station, go along King Street. Go past the station entrance and walk straight on. The museum is on your left. See you there!

Mediation: help a visitor

A German-speaking visitor says: Ich bin am Bahnhof und möchte zum Museum. Wo muss ich hin?

Explain the route in simple English. Do not translate every German word. Give only the information the visitor needs.

Useful start: You’re at the station. Go …

Language focus: grammar for communication

Use the language because it helps you solve the task:

  1. Imperatives: Go straight on. Turn left. Get off at the museum.
  2. Questions: Where is the museum? How do I get to the park? Is it far?
  3. Place phrases: next to, opposite, between, on your left/right.
  4. Polite language: Excuse me. Can you help me, please? Thanks a lot.

You do not need advanced tense grammar for this course. The focus is on clear directions and useful questions.

Feedback and use again

After one speaking or writing task, check:

  1. Did I name the start and destination?
  2. Did I put the steps in a clear order?
  3. Did I use left/right correctly?
  4. Did I use one polite phrase?
  5. Can another person follow my route?

Then improve one thing and do the route again.

Can-do check

Choose: yes / almost / not yet.

  1. I can find a place on the Bridgemere map.
  2. I can choose a bus from the timetable.
  3. I can ask for directions politely.
  4. I can give a route with three steps.
  5. I can check one detail when I do not understand.
  6. I can write a short meeting message.

If you choose “almost” or “not yet”: repeat one task from map → timetable → dialogue → speaking.
