E6 M - Explain culture-specific information

Look – listen – explain. In this aiMOOC, you learn how to help another person understand culture-specific information. You do not translate every word. You pass on the important meaning.

Media start: Watch a short part of the video. Which time phrases do you hear? Then look at the UK map and flag. What do you already know about school life or special days in the UK?

Deutsch-Hilfe: Höre zuerst auf bekannte Wörter. Du musst nicht alles verstehen. Suche nur nach Uhrzeiten und nach Informationen, die für eine andere Person wichtig wären.

Safe media use: You do not need to upload anything. Recordings are optional and should stay private unless your teacher gives a safe school platform. If you use AI, check facts with reliable sources and write the final answer in your own words.

I can ...

  1. I can explain a time such as 6 pm in a way a German-speaking person understands.
  2. I can explain school words such as assembly, canteen or head teacher with simple English or German help.
  3. I can describe a festival such as Bonfire Night in one or two clear sentences.
  4. I can mediate the important information without translating every word.

Vorwissen-Check

Try these three mini tasks before you learn more.

  1. Say 6 pm in German.
  2. Explain school uniform without using the German word first.
  3. Tell a partner what you would do if a culture-specific word has no simple translation.

Hint: Think about meaning, not word-for-word translation.

German help: Frage Dich: Was muss die andere Person wissen, um die Situation zu verstehen?

Example: Assembly → a meeting for many pupils at school.

Possible solution: 6 pm = 18 Uhr. A school uniform is special clothing pupils wear at some schools. If a word is difficult, give a short explanation.

Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again

Notice: Spot culture-specific information

Look at the pictures. What information may need a short explanation for a German-speaking friend?

Short message from Noah, a fictional pupil in Bristol:

Hi Mila, our school starts at 8:50. We have assembly at 9:00. Lunch is in the canteen at 12:30. On Friday we finish at half past three. In November my family sometimes goes to a Bonfire Night event. It starts at 6 pm. There are fireworks and a bonfire. See you, Noah

Notice: The words assembly, canteen, half past three, 6 pm and Bonfire Night may need mediation.

Understand: Meaning before words

A good mediator asks: What does the other person need to understand?

Expression Simple English German help
6 pm six in the evening 18 Uhr
half past three 3:30 halb vier
assembly a school meeting for many pupils Schulversammlung
canteen a place at school where pupils can eat Mensa / Schulkantine
head teacher the person who leads a school Schulleitung / Schulleiterin oder Schulleiter
half term a short school break in the middle of a term kurze Ferien in der Mitte eines Schulabschnitts
school uniform clothes pupils have to wear at some schools Schuluniform
Bonfire Night a UK tradition on 5 November with bonfires and fireworks in many places britischer Gedenk- und Festabend am 5. November

Important: These examples help you understand a message. They do not mean that every pupil, school or family in the UK does the same thing.

Bild- und Audioinput: School life

Listen first. Which school words can you catch? Then watch again and note two places or activities.

German help: Beim ersten Hören reichen einzelne Schlüsselwörter. Beim zweiten Hören suchst Du gezielt nach zwei Informationen.

Culture check: Compare the classroom video with your own school. Use In the video ..., At my school ... and Both .... Do not say that one school stands for all schools in a country.

Vocabulary in context

Read the short dialogue.

Ava: Our assembly starts at nine.
Leo: What is an assembly?
Ava: It is a meeting for many pupils. We hear school news there.
Leo: Thanks. And where do you have lunch?
Ava: In the canteen. It is the place where we eat at school.

Useful phrases: It means ... / It is a ... / It is the place where ... / People often ... / In this message, ... means ...

Practise: Explain, do not translate every word

Task: A German friend asks what Noah's message means. Give the key information in German. Explain assembly and Bonfire Night briefly.

Try English first: First underline the key words in the English message. Say in English what each key word means.

Hint: Keep the time, place and event. Leave out small details that are not needed.

German help: Übertrage den Sinn. Eine kurze Zusatz-Erklärung ist besser als eine unverständliche Wort-für-Wort-Übersetzung.

Example: The event starts at 6 pm. → Die Veranstaltung beginnt um 18 Uhr.

Solution: Noahs Schule beginnt um 8:50 Uhr. Um 9 Uhr gibt es eine gemeinsame Schulversammlung. Mittag gegessen wird in der Schulkantine. Am Freitag ist um halb vier Schluss. Im November geht seine Familie manchmal zu einer Bonfire-Night-Veranstaltung, einem britischen Abend am 5. November mit Feuer und Feuerwerk. Die Veranstaltung beginnt um 18 Uhr.

Festival focus: Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is linked to the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. On 5 November, many places in the UK hold public bonfires or firework displays. Not every person celebrates it in the same way.

Explain it simply: Bonfire Night is a tradition on 5 November. In many places, people watch bonfires and fireworks.

One more example: Pancake Day

Pancake Day is another culture-specific name. The date changes each year. In the UK, many people eat pancakes on this day.

Mediation idea: If the name alone is not enough, add the short meaning: a special day when many people eat pancakes.

Pronunciation: Clear is the goal

Say the words slowly, then in a short sentence.

  1. assembly → stress the second part: as-SEM-bly
  2. uniform → stress the first part: U-ni-form
  3. canteen → stress the last part: can-TEEN
  4. fireworks → stress the first part: FIRE-works

Speak for meaning: Our assembly starts at nine. / Lunch is in the canteen. / The fireworks start at 6 pm.

Your accent does not have to sound native. Being easy to understand is more important than accent-free speech.

Speaking: Short explanation

Choose one expression: 6 pm, assembly, head teacher, half term, school uniform or Bonfire Night. Give a 20–30 second explanation.

Use this frame: The expression is ... . It means ... . You may see or hear it when ... . A German friend needs to know that ... .

German help: Nenne zuerst den Begriff, dann die Bedeutung und zuletzt den Kontext.

Optional recording: You may record yourself for practice, but only if you want to. Keep the recording private or use a teacher-approved school system.

Reading: A message from a host family

Fictional message:

Hi Ben, school starts at 8:45 tomorrow. Please be there ten minutes early. At 9:00 there is assembly in the hall. Lunch is in the canteen at 12:20. We finish at 3:30. Next week is half term, so there are no lessons for a few days.

Reading task: What are the four most important facts for Ben? Which one expression needs a short explanation?

Hint: Look for times, place and a change to the normal school week.

German help: Suche nach Uhrzeiten, Ort und der Information zu half term.

Example: 3:30 → 15:30 Uhr.

Solution: Ben soll morgen gegen 8:35 Uhr an der Schule sein. Um 9 Uhr ist eine Schulversammlung in der Halle. Mittagessen ist um 12:20 Uhr in der Schulkantine. Um 15:30 Uhr endet der Schultag. Half term bedeutet hier kurze Schulferien in der Mitte eines Schulabschnitts.

Writing: Short output

Write a short message of 4–6 connected sentences to a German-speaking friend. Explain two pieces of information from the host-family message. Include one short explanation of a culture-specific term.

Starter: Tomorrow the school day starts ... . The word ... means ... .

German help: Schreibe nicht alles neu. Wähle die wichtigsten Informationen und erkläre einen schwierigen Begriff.

Sprachmittlung: Two directions

Situation A – English to German: Your German-speaking parent wants to know when the school event starts and what assembly means. Give the key information in German.

Situation B – German to English: An English-speaking exchange pupil asks what Nikolaustag is. Explain it simply in English without giving a full translation of every detail.

Useful English: It is a day on 6 December. Some children receive small treats. Traditions can be different in different families and regions.

Feedback: Check your message

Before you finish, ask yourself:

  1. Did I give the main meaning?
  2. Did I keep important times and places?
  3. Did I add a short explanation when needed?
  4. Are my sentences clear and connected?
  5. Did I avoid saying that all people in one country do the same thing?
  6. Did I check facts and write in my own words?

Accuracy focus: Check am/pm, time phrases and the key culture word. One clear correction is better than changing every sentence.

Use again: New situation

New message: Our class meets the head teacher at 10 am. After that we have lunch in the canteen. School finishes at quarter past three.

Explain the message to a German-speaking friend in 2–3 sentences.

Hint: Three facts matter: person, lunch place, finishing time.

German help: head teacher ist die Person, die die Schule leitet. quarter past three ist 15:15 Uhr.

Example: 10 am → 10 Uhr vormittags.

Solution: Die Klasse trifft um 10 Uhr die Schulleitung. Danach gibt es Mittagessen in der Schulkantine. Die Schule endet um 15:15 Uhr.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Select and mediate: You receive a new school message with five details. Choose the three details a German visitor really needs and explain why you chose them.
  2. Explain in context: Explain a new culture-specific term first in simple English and then, if needed, with one short German help sentence.
  3. Change the audience: Explain the same school event once to a classmate and once to a parent. Show how your wording changes.
  4. Improve a weak translation: A word-for-word translation is confusing. Rewrite it so that the meaning is clear and add one short explanation.
  5. Avoid stereotypes: Rewrite three overgeneralising statements such as All British pupils ... into careful, evidence-based sentences.
  6. Use again: Create a new fictional message with a time, a school term and a celebration. Ask a partner to mediate it and give feedback with the checklist.
