Mini-Mission: Your English-speaking friend Jamie is visiting Germany in November. Jamie sees children with colourful lanterns and asks: “What is happening?” Your job is to explain the tradition in clear, simple English.

Important: There is no single tradition that every person in Germany follows. St Martin’s lantern parades are common in many places, but customs can be different from town to town and from family to family.

Understand: A German tradition

Read:

St Martin’s Day is on 11 November. In many places in Germany, children and families join a lantern parade in the evening. Children carry lanterns and often sing songs while they walk. Some parades include a person dressed as St Martin, sometimes on a horse. The tradition is linked to the story of Martin of Tours. In the well-known story, Martin shared part of his cloak with a poor man who was cold. Today, many people connect the story with sharing and helping others.
