Mini-Beschreibung: Translation tools can help you with a word or a short phrase. But they are not your homework. Write first. Check second. Think always.

Try English first: Translation tools are useful. But a tool can choose a strange word or miss the context.

Hint: A tool gives an answer. You must check the answer.

Example: Your sentence: “I meet my friend after school.” A tool may give you a longer sentence with words you do not know.

Solution: Use English that you understand and can explain.

I can think. I notice words that are too difficult or do not fit.
I can improve. I change one or two parts of my sentence.
I can explain. I can say why my final sentence is good for me.

Notice

Mia is in Year 6. Her homework is: Write three sentences about your afternoon.

Mia writes:

My sentence: “After school, I meet my friend at the park. We play basketball.”

A fictitious tool version says:

Tool sentence: “After school, I encounter my friend in the park. We engage in a game of basketball.”

Both sentences can communicate the idea. But Mia knows and uses meet and play. She does not normally use encounter or engage in.

Notice: A longer sentence is not automatically a better sentence.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Ein komplizierter Satz ist nicht automatisch besser. Für Deine Hausaufgabe ist ein Satz gut, wenn er zur Aufgabe passt und Du ihn verstehst.

WRITE → CHECK → THINK → IMPROVE

Do not use:

TOOL → COPY → FINISH

Understand

A translation tool can automatically change text from one language to another. It can be useful. It can also make mistakes or choose a word that does not fit the situation.

Good use in this course:

Look up one word.
Check one short phrase.
Listen to one word.
Compare a tool sentence with your own sentence.
Ask: “Do I understand every important word?”

Not your homework:

Do not paste the complete task into a tool and copy the answer.
Do not hand in sentences you cannot explain.
Do not paste names, addresses, photos or private information into an external tool.
Use only tools your teacher allows.

Try English first: What does check mean here?

Hint: You look again. You ask: Is it right? Does it fit?

German help: check = prüfen.

Example: “I check the word in a dictionary.”

Solution: A tool can help you check. You still make the final decision.

Keep it small: You do not need many new words. Use the word bank when you need it.

Context matters

A word can have more than one meaning. A tool needs context.

Example: “bank” can be a place for money or a seat in a park in German contexts. A full sentence helps you understand the meaning.

Try English first: Read: “We sit on a bench in the park.” What is clear?

Hint: The park gives you context.

German help: Der Zusammenhang hilft Dir, die richtige Bedeutung zu erkennen.

Solution: Do not check only one word. Read the whole short sentence too.

Compare two versions

Read the two pairs.

Pair A

Own sentence: “I am hungry, so I make a sandwich.”

Fictitious tool sentence: “I am starving; therefore, I prepare a sandwich.”

Question: Which sentence is easier for a Year 6 learner to understand and explain?

Answer: The first sentence is easier. The second sentence is not automatically wrong, but it uses harder language.

Pair B

Own sentence: “My dog is funny. He likes my shoes.”

Fictitious tool sentence: “My canine companion is amusing and displays a preference for my footwear.”

Question: Which version sounds like simple classroom English?

Answer: The first version.

Rule: Simple and clear is good English.

Mini-check: green, yellow or red?

Think about a tool sentence.

Green: I understand it. The words fit. I could say it myself.
Yellow: I understand most of it, but one word is strange or too hard. I check it.
Red: I do not understand the sentence. I do not copy it.

Listen and notice

Ask a teacher, partner or text reader in your learning platform to read this short text twice at a moderate speed:

Listening text:

“Ben writes two sentences for homework. He does not know the word ‘usually’. He checks this one word. Then he reads his sentence again. He keeps his own sentence because he understands it.”

First listen: What does Ben check?

Hint: one word / one sentence / the complete homework

German help: Höre auf das Wort nach “checks”.

Solution: He checks one word.

Second listen: Why does he keep his own sentence?

Solution: Because he understands it.

Pronunciation

Say these words slowly:

tool – check – own – sentence

Then say:

“I check my own sentence.”

Your goal is clear speech, not a perfect accent.

Optional: Record the sentence only if your teacher allows it. Keep the recording private. Do not upload it without a clear task and permission.

A: I want to check the word “after”.

Read Sam's note:

What does Sam check?
Does Sam ask a tool to write the complete note?

German help: Suche nur die Information im Text. Du musst nicht jedes Wort übersetzen.

Solutions: Sam visits his grandma. Sam checks one word. No, Sam writes the sentence himself.

Short writing

Write three short sentences about your afternoon.

Word bank: after school – home – friend – play – read – eat – visit – homework – usually – then

Starter:

After school, I ...
Then I ...
In the evening, I ...

Now choose one word or short phrase you are unsure about.

Step 1: Try your sentence first.

Step 2: Use a dictionary or a teacher-approved translation tool only for the small part you need.

Step 3: Compare.

Step 4: Keep or change your sentence.

Step 5: Be ready to explain every important word.

Optional language mediation

Your English-speaking exchange partner asks:

“What do we need for tomorrow?”

The German school note says:

“Bringt morgen bitte einen Bleistift, ein Lineal und Euer Englischheft mit.”

Do not translate every word. Give the important information in simple English.

Hint: Start with “Please bring ...”

German help: Bei Sprachmittlung gibst Du die wichtige Information sinngemäß weiter.

Example solution: “Please bring a pencil, a ruler and your English exercise book tomorrow.”

Feedback

Use this simple check for your three sentences:

Meaning: Is my message clear?
My English: Do I understand my words?
Task: Does my text answer the task?
Tool check: Did I use a tool only as help?
Final read: Can I read my text aloud?

Use again

Improve one sentence after feedback.

Before: “I go park with my friend.”

Hint: One small word is missing.

German help: Vor “park” brauchst Du hier einen Artikel mit Präposition.

Example: “I go to the park with my friend.”

Solution: Make one useful change. Then use the sentence again in a new mini-text.

Write:

“On Saturday, I go to the park with my friend. We play football.”

Safe and fair tool use

Use school-approved tools only.
Use fictitious examples in class tasks.
Do not enter private data.
Do not upload recordings, photos or homework to external services unless your teacher has clearly asked for it and permission is given.
Check AI or translation output.
Write the final text yourself.

Remember: A tool may support your learning. It should not replace your learning.
