E6 G - Sentence stress – Wichtige Wörter betonen

Mini-Beschreibung: Listen and copy simple sentence stress. Make important words easy to hear.

Level: Klasse 6, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Language help: Try English first → Hint → Deutsch → Example → Solution.

Einleitung

When you speak English, not every word sounds the same. Some words are strong. Other words are weak. The strong words help your listener understand your message.

Example:

I WANT the BLUE bag.

You hear want and blue clearly. The small word the is weaker.

Sentence stress is not about a perfect accent. It is about being easy to understand.

Merke: Wichtige Wörter werden oft stärker betont. Kleine Funktionswörter sind oft schwächer. Das ist eine Faustregel, keine starre Regel.

Medien-Einstieg: Listen first

Watch and listen for a short moment. Do not try to understand every word. Listen for strong words.

Datei:Hangout - "Don't Stress Over Sentence Stress!".webm

Task: Clap when you hear a strong word.

Hint: Strong words can sound louder, longer or clearer.

Deutsch: Klatsche bei Wörtern, die deutlich hervortreten.

Mini-task: Listen to one short example. Stop the video. Copy the rhythm once.

I can

After this aiMOOC:

  1. I can hear important words in a short English sentence.
  2. I can stress one or two important words.
  3. I can copy a simple English rhythm.
  4. I can speak a short message clearly.
  5. I can check if my listener understands the key words.

Vorwissen-Check

Say these sentences slowly:

  1. I like football.
  2. My sister has a new bike.
  3. We meet after school.

Now say each sentence again. Make the most important word a little stronger.

Hint: Which word carries the main message?

Deutsch: Welches Wort ist für die Aussage besonders wichtig?

Example: I like FOOTBALL.

Notice

What do you hear?

Listen to the word stress.

Now look at a sound wave.

A sound wave shows that speech changes over time. In real speech, stressed parts can sound more prominent.

Easy rule: Important words often stand out.

Common important words are often:

  1. nouns: bus, friend, school
  2. main verbs: want, play, meet
  3. adjectives: big, new, funny
  4. question words: where, when, why

Small grammar words such as a, the, to, can are often weaker.

Important: The meaning decides. A small word can also be stressed when it is important.

Rhythm

English speech has a rhythm. Strong and weak parts alternate.

Say and clap:

I LIKE my NEW bike.

Clap on:

LIKE – NEW – BIKE

Try again:

We MEET after SCHOOL.

Clap on:

MEET – SCHOOL

Look only: The picture shows that languages can organise rhythm differently. You do not need to learn the diagram.

Understand

Meaning can change

Stress can show what is important now.

I want the BLUE bag. → Not the red bag.

I WANT the blue bag. → I really want it.

I want the blue BAG. → The bag is the important thing.

You do not need to use many strong words. One clear focus is often enough.

Practise

Listen and copy

Watch a short part.

Choose one easy sentence from the video.

  1. Listen.
  2. Pause.
  3. Tap the rhythm.
  4. Say the sentence.
  5. Say it again.

Feedback question: Did your important word stand out?

Echo practice

Read the model. Then copy it.

Teacher/model: I NEED a PEN.

You: I NEED a PEN.

Teacher/model: The BUS is LATE.

You: The BUS is LATE.

Teacher/model: WHERE is my BAG?

You: WHERE is my BAG?

Hint: Do not shout. Make the key word a little clearer and stronger.

Deutsch: Nicht schreien. Das wichtige Wort nur etwas deutlicher hervorheben.

Tap the beat

Tap on the CAPITAL words.

  1. I LIKE this SONG.
  2. We PLAY after SCHOOL.
  3. My NEW shoes are BLUE.
  4. WHERE is the BUS?

Now cover the capital letters and try again.

Use

Speaking: My short message

Choose one sentence starter.

Word bank: football – music – bike – game – friend – school – Saturday – new – great

  1. I really like ...
  2. My favourite ... is ...
  3. I need ...
  4. We meet ...
  5. I want the ... one.

Say one sentence. Stress one or two important words.

Example: My favourite game is MINECRAFT.

Partner feedback: Tell your partner the word you heard most clearly.

Reading aloud

Read this mini-dialogue.

Sam: Where is my BLUE bag?

Mia: Your blue bag is on the CHAIR.

Sam: No, the OTHER chair.

Mia: Oh! Here it is.

Now read it again. Make the bold words clear.

Challenge: Choose one different word to stress. Does the message change?

Short writing output

Write three short sentences about your day.

Use these starters:

  1. I like ...
  2. After school, I ...
  3. Today I need ...

Underline one important word in each sentence.

Then read your sentences aloud.

Example: After school, I play football.

Optional language mediation

Your German-speaking friend asks:

„Was bedeutet es, ein wichtiges Wort im englischen Satz zu betonen?“

Answer in simple German. Use one English example.

Starter: Ein wichtiges Wort klingt ...

Feedback

Use this quick check after speaking.

Check Yes / Not yet
My key word was easy to hear.
I did not stress every word.
I kept a simple rhythm.
My partner understood the message.

One feedback sentence:

I heard ... clearly.

or

Try ... a little stronger.

Use again

Say the same sentence twice with a different focus.

Sentence:

I want the green T-shirt.

Round 1: Stress green.

Round 2: Stress T-shirt.

Ask your partner:

What was important?

If your partner can answer, your stress helped the message.

Pronunciation and privacy

Clear speech is more important than accent-free speech. Different English accents are normal.

You can practise with clapping, tapping or speaking quietly.

A recording is optional. Keep recordings private unless your teacher gives a clear safe task. Do not upload voice files without permission.

If you use AI tools for language help, check the result and write or speak in your own words. Do not send personal data or recordings to external AI services without permission.
