E6 G - Help while shopping or travelling

Mini-Beschreibung: You help in a simple bilingual situation. You pass on important information about prices, directions, times or shopping. You do not translate every word. You give the important message.

Klasse 6 · Englisch als erste Fremdsprache · Baden-Württemberg · G-Niveau

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Look first. What can you understand without translating every word?

Hint: Look for arrows, place names and short signs.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Suche zuerst nur die Informationen, die du wirklich brauchst.

Watch smart: Watch a short part twice. First: What is the topic? Second: Which direction words do you hear? You do not need every word.

I can ...

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can pass on key information about a price, a way, a time or a simple purchase.
  2. I can listen for key words such as price, time, left, right and size.
  3. I can ask simple questions such as “How much is it?” or “Where is the station?”
  4. I can find useful information on a sign, ticket machine or short shop notice.
  5. I can write a short useful message with a time, place or price.

Important: Clear and understandable English is the goal. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Before you start: quick check

Try English first.

  1. Can you say a price in English?
  2. Can you say a time such as 3:20?
  3. Do you know left and right?
  4. Can you ask for help politely?

Hint: You only need a few useful words.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Wenn du bei einer Frage unsicher bist, ist das okay. Genau diese vier Dinge übst du hier.

Example: “Excuse me. Where is the station?”

Solution idea: You are ready if you can understand at least some of the key words.

Notice: four kinds of key information

You often need only one small piece of information.

Situation Key question Key words Deutsch-Hilfe
Price How much is it? pound, pence, cheap, total Preis
Way Where is ...? left, right, straight, next to Weg
Time What time ...? at, leaves, opens, closes Zeit
Shopping Can I have ...? size, colour, two, please Einkauf

Rule: Keep the meaning. Do not translate word by word.

Example: “The bus leaves at 4:15 from stop B.” → “Der Bus fährt um 16:15 Uhr an Haltestelle B ab.”

Media spot: shopping

Notice: You do not need the names of all products. In a real task, look for the item, the price and the number you need.

Remember: £ means pound. In this course, all prices, times, routes and shop details in the exercises are fictitious.

Understand: mini situations

Situation 1: price

Shop assistant: “The red T-shirt is eight pounds. The blue T-shirt is ten pounds.”

Your German-speaking friend asks: “Was kostet das rote T-Shirt?”

Try English first: Find only the answer your friend needs.

Hint: red + eight pounds.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du brauchst nur Farbe und Preis.

Example: “The red one ...”

Solution: “Das rote T-Shirt kostet acht Pfund.”

Video task: Listen for one shopping phrase. Do not write the whole dialogue.

Situation 2: directions

A person says: “Go straight. Turn left at the café. The station is next to the library.”

Your friend asks: “Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof?”

Try English first: Say the route in a short German sentence.

Hint: straight → left → next to the library.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Behalte die Reihenfolge der Wegangaben.

Example: “Geradeaus, dann ...”

Solution: “Geh geradeaus, dann am Café links. Der Bahnhof ist neben der Bibliothek.”

Situation 3: time

Station message: “Bus 24 leaves at 3:40 from stop C.”

Your German-speaking partner asks: “Wann und wo fährt der Bus?”

Try English first: Pick out the two key facts.

Hint: 3:40 + stop C.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Gesucht sind Zeit und Haltestelle.

Example: “Um ... an ...”

Solution: “Bus 24 fährt um 15:40 Uhr an Haltestelle C.”

Video task: Listen for one time. Say it quietly to yourself. Then check again.

Situation 4: shopping request

Your German-speaking family member says: “Bitte kauf zwei Sandwiches ohne Käse. Du hast sieben Pfund.”

You speak to the shop assistant.

Try English first.

Hint: two sandwiches + no cheese + seven pounds.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst die Bitte sinnvoll weitergeben, nicht Wort für Wort übersetzen.

Example: “Two sandwiches, please ...”

Solution: “Two sandwiches, please. No cheese. I have seven pounds.”

Vocabulary in context

Learn small groups, not long lists.

English Simple meaning Example
how much wie viel / was kostet How much is it?
left links Turn left.
right rechts Turn right.
straight geradeaus Go straight.
next to neben It is next to the café.
leaves at fährt ab um The bus leaves at four.
size Größe What size?
ticket Fahrkarte One ticket, please.
please bitte Two apples, please.
help helfen / Hilfe Can you help me?

Mini word bank: price · pound · left · right · straight · station · bus · ticket · size · please

Pronunciation: be easy to understand

Say the phrases slowly first. Then say them at normal classroom speed.

  1. “Excuse me.”
  2. “How much is it?”
  3. “Where is the station?”
  4. “Turn left.”
  5. “Two tickets, please.”

Hint: Stress the important word: “How MUCH is it?” / “Turn LEFT.”

Deutsch-Hilfe: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit. Sprich Schlüsselwörter deutlich.

Private practice: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private. Do not upload recordings, photos or personal data.

Practise

Listen twice

A teacher, partner or learning group reads each text clearly at a moderate speed. No online upload is needed.

Listening A:

“Excuse me. The museum shop closes at five. A postcard is two pounds.”

Question: What time does the shop close?

Hint: Listen for one time.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Höre nur auf die Uhrzeit.

Solution: It closes at five.

Listening B:

“The bus stop is next to the bank. Go straight and turn right at the supermarket.”

Question: Where do you turn?

Hint: One direction word.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Gesucht ist nur die Abbiegerichtung.

Solution: Turn right.

Listening C:

“The small bag is six pounds. The large bag is nine pounds.”

Question: How much is the small bag?

Hint: small + price.

Solution: Six pounds.

Read for key facts

Fictitious travel notice:

TRAIN TO RIVERTON Platform 2 Leaves 14:25 Single ticket £5

Your friend asks: “Wann fährt der Zug, von welchem Gleis und was kostet eine einfache Fahrt?”

Try English first: Find three facts.

Hint: time · platform · price.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Nicht den ganzen Hinweis übersetzen.

Example: “Der Zug fährt um ...”

Solution: “Der Zug fährt um 14:25 Uhr von Gleis 2. Eine einfache Fahrt kostet fünf Pfund.”

Speak: short role cards

Work with a partner.

Card A – traveller: Ask for the station.

Sentence starters:

  1. Excuse me. Where is ...?
  2. Is it left or right?
  3. Thank you.

Card B – helper: Give two simple steps.

Word bank: go straight · turn left · turn right · next to

Then swap roles.

Feedback: Did your partner understand the way? If yes, your English worked.

Shopping role play

Customer: You need one green T-shirt in a small size. Your maximum price is £12.

Shop assistant: The green T-shirt is £11. The blue one is £9. Both are available in small.

Task: Ask, answer and choose.

Sentence starters:

  1. Have you got this in green?
  2. Have you got a small size?
  3. How much is it?
  4. I’ll take it, please.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du brauchst nur Farbe, Größe und Preis.

Write: one useful message

Write 3 short lines.

Situation: Your friend needs the travel information.

Fictitious facts: Bus 18 · 16:10 · stop D · ticket £3.

Writing frame:

Hi Sam, Bus 18 leaves at ____. It leaves from ____. The ticket is ____.

Hint: Copy facts, but write the sentence yourself.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Drei kurze Sätze reichen.

Example solution:

Hi Sam, Bus 18 leaves at 4:10. It leaves from stop D. The ticket is £3.

Use: simple mediation

Mediation means: Give the important meaning to the other person.

Do not worry about a perfect translation.

Task 1: English to German

Shop sign:

“Lunch deal: sandwich and water £4.50. Until 2 pm.”

Your German-speaking friend asks: “Was bekomme ich und bis wann gilt das Angebot?”

Try English first.

Hint: food + drink + time.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Der Preis ist hier nicht gefragt. Lass Unwichtiges weg.

Example: “Du bekommst ...”

Solution: “Du bekommst ein Sandwich und Wasser. Das Angebot gilt bis 14 Uhr.”

Task 2: German to English

Your German-speaking friend says: “Frag bitte, ob der Bus zum Zoo um halb vier fährt.”

Try English first.

Hint: bus + zoo + 3:30.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Eine einfache Frage reicht.

Example: “Does the bus ...?”

Solution: “Does the bus to the zoo leave at 3:30?”

Task 3: choose what matters

Message:

“The shop is opposite the park. It opens at nine. The owner likes dogs. Today all notebooks are two pounds.”

Your friend asks: “Wann öffnet der Laden und was kostet heute ein Heft?”

Which facts matter?

Hint: opening time + notebook price.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Die Information über Hunde brauchst du nicht.

Solution: “Der Laden öffnet um neun. Ein Heft kostet heute zwei Pfund.”

Feedback

After a task, check only these four points:

  1. Did I give the right fact?
  2. Did I keep the meaning?
  3. Was my message short and clear?
  4. Did the other person understand?

If one fact is wrong, use this repair strategy:

STOP → find the key word → say one short sentence → check again.

Useful repair phrases:

  1. Sorry. Again, please.
  2. Can you say that slowly, please?
  3. Do you mean left?
  4. Is that three pounds or thirteen pounds?

Three central error targets

Focus on only a few useful forms.

  1. Price: say “How much is it?” for a price.
  2. Place: use “Where is ...?” and simple direction words.
  3. Time: use “at” before a time: “The bus leaves at four.”

No long grammar rules are needed here. Use the phrases to communicate.

Use again

New mini challenge:

A shop assistant says: “The black cap is five pounds. The shop closes at six. The bus stop is outside the shop.”

Your friend asks: “Wo ist die Bushaltestelle und wann schließt der Laden?”

Try English first.

Hint: outside + six.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Der Preis der Kappe ist diesmal unwichtig.

Solution: “Die Bushaltestelle ist vor dem Laden. Der Laden schließt um sechs.”
