Einleitung

E6 G - Bigger, smaller, faster – Adjektive vergleichen

Mini goal: Compare two animals, things or places with short adjectives: bigger, smaller, faster, slower, taller, shorter, older, younger, longer + than.

Class 6 · G-level · English as first foreign language · Baden-Württemberg

Skills: listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, grammar and pronunciation.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Look at the pictures. Say one sentence: A cheetah is faster than a tortoise.

I can ...

  1. I can understand simple comparisons with -er and than.
  2. I can form common words like bigger, smaller, faster.
  3. I can compare animals, things and places in short sentences.
  4. I can say and write two or three clear comparison sentences.

Quick check: What do you know?

Say the words aloud: big – small – fast – slow – tall – short – old – young – long.

Now finish two easy ideas:

  1. A mouse is ...
  2. A giraffe is ...

Try English first. Hint: Use one adjective. Deutsch-Hilfe: Beschreibe nur eine Eigenschaft. Noch kein Vergleich nötig. Example: A giraffe is tall. Check: If your sentence is short and clear, good start!

Notice: Look and listen

Notice: An elephant is bigger than a mouse. A mouse is smaller than an elephant.

A giraffe is taller than a mouse.

Mini listening text – read slowly and clearly twice by your teacher or a partner:

“Look at the animals. The cheetah is faster than the tortoise. The elephant is bigger than the mouse. The giraffe is taller than the mouse.”

Listen 1: Point to the correct picture. Listen 2: Say the comparative word you hear.

Understand: The easy pattern

For many short adjectives, add -er.

adjective + er + than

big → bigger than small → smaller than fast → faster than slow → slower than tall → taller than short → shorter than old → older than young → younger than long → longer than

One spelling point: big → bigger.

One sentence frame: A cheetah is faster than a tortoise.

German help: Mit than vergleichst du zwei Dinge. Oft kommt bei kurzen Adjektiven -er dazu.

Words in context

Word bank: big, small, fast, slow, tall, short, old, young, long.

Use a real or imagined bike, bus, animal or building.

Sentence starters:

  1. The bike is ... than ...
  2. The bus is ... than ...
  3. The dog is ... than ...
  4. This building is ... than ...

Places: compare what you see

You do not need exact facts. Compare what you can see in the pictures.

Try English first. Hint: Use tall / long / old only when the picture or given information supports it. Deutsch-Hilfe: Nutze keine erfundenen Daten. Vergleiche nur sichtbare oder vorgegebene Merkmale. Example: The tower looks taller than the bridge tower in this picture. Solution idea: A correct short sentence with -er + than is enough.

Pronunciation: clear is good

Say the pairs slowly, then at normal speed:

big – bigger fast – faster small – smaller long – longer

Now say: The cheetah is faster than the tortoise.

Tip: Stress the important comparison word: FASTER. Speak clearly. You do not need a perfect accent.

Practise: Choose and build

Complete the sentences.

  1. A cheetah is ______ than a tortoise. (fast)
  2. An elephant is ______ than a mouse. (big)
  3. A mouse is ______ than an elephant. (small)
  4. A giraffe is ______ than a mouse. (tall)

Try English first. Hint: Add -er. For big, write one extra g. Deutsch-Hilfe: Bei big heißt es bigger. Example: slow → slower Solutions: faster · bigger · smaller · taller

Speak: Compare two things

Work with a partner. Choose two animals, objects or places.

A: Which is bigger? B: The elephant is bigger than the mouse.

A: Which is faster? B: The cheetah is faster than the tortoise.

Useful starters:

  1. I think ... is ... than ...
  2. Yes, ... is ... than ...
  3. No, I think ... is ... than ...

Recording is optional. If you record, keep it private unless your teacher and everyone in the recording agree.

Read: At the school fair

Mia and Sam are at a small school fair. There are two toy cars. The red car is big. The blue car is small. In a short race, the blue car is faster than the red car. There are also two paper towers. Tower A is taller than Tower B.

Read and answer in short English:

  1. Which toy car is smaller?
  2. Which toy car is faster?
  3. Which paper tower is taller?

Hint: Find smaller, faster, taller. Deutsch-Hilfe: Suche die Vergleichswörter im Text. Solutions: The blue car. · The blue car. · Tower A.

Write: 3 comparison sentences

Choose one set:

  1. two animals
  2. two objects
  3. two places

Write three short sentences.

Word bank: bigger, smaller, faster, slower, taller, shorter, older, younger, longer.

Frame: The ______ is ______ than the ______.

Check yourself:

  1. Did you use -er?
  2. Did you use than?
  3. Is the comparison clear?

You do not need an external AI tool. If your school allows AI help, check every suggestion and write the final sentences in your own words. Do not enter personal data.

Mini mediation

Your German-speaking friend asks: „Was bedeutet The bike is faster than the bus?“

Do not translate every word. Explain the meaning in simple German: Es geht darum, dass ...

Then say one new English example with faster than.

Feedback: Fix only 3 common errors

1. more faster → faster 2. biger → bigger 3. faster a tortoise → faster than a tortoise

Now fix:

  1. The cheetah is more faster than the tortoise.
  2. An elephant is biger than a mouse.
  3. A bike is faster a slow toy car.

Solutions:

  1. The cheetah is faster than the tortoise.
  2. An elephant is bigger than a mouse.
  3. A bike is faster than a slow toy car.

Use again: New picture, new sentence

Look again at one picture above. Make a new comparison. Do not copy an old sentence.

Challenge: Say two linked sentences: “The elephant is bigger than the mouse. The mouse is smaller than the elephant.”

Pause the video when you need time. Repeat a useful sentence aloud.
