E6 E - My vocabulary revision system
E6 E - My vocabulary revision system
Mini-description: Build your own vocabulary revision routine with retrieval practice, audio, chunks, pictures and spaced repetition. Work mainly in simple English. German is help when you need it.

Media starter: Watch about one minute. Listen for one idea that can help you remember words. You do not need to understand every word.
Help ladder: Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution.
Einleitung
You already know many English words. The challenge is to find them fast when you need them. In this course, you build a small revision system that fits you.
The learning loop is:
Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.
Your system uses five tools: retrieval practice, audio, chunks, pictures and spaced repetition.
I-can goals
After this course, you can say:
- I can recall words without looking at the answer first.
- I can learn useful chunks, not only single words.
- I can use pictures and audio to remember meaning and sound.
- I can plan short review sessions over several days.
- I can use new vocabulary in speaking and a short text.
- I can check my own learning and change my routine.
Before you start: quick check
Choose 6–10 English words from your current unit. Use only words that are safe to share in class.
Cover the English words. Can you say them from memory?
- Green: I know it quickly.
- Yellow: I know it with a hint.
- Red: I do not know it yet.
Do not worry about mistakes. A mistake tells you what to practise next.

Notice: What helps memory?
Retrieval practice
Retrieval practice means: close the book and try to remember first. Then check.
Example:
Prompt: das Abenteuer Your try: ... Check: adventure Use: It was a great adventure.
The important step is the try before the check.
Spaced repetition
Do not repeat everything five times in one minute. Come back later.
This is one simple example:
- Today: learn and test.
- Tomorrow: test again.
- After 3 days: test again.
- After 7 days: test again.
- After 14 days: test again.
Change the gaps if needed. Hard words can return sooner. Easy words can return later.

Think: Which cards should you see more often: easy cards or difficult cards?
Audio and pronunciation
Listen, copy, then use the word in a short phrase. Clear speech is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Pronunciation routine: listen → repeat → say the chunk → use it in a sentence.
You may record your voice only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you choose to share them.
Pictures and chunks
A chunk is a useful group of words.
Instead of learning only decision, learn a chunk such as make a decision.
Instead of learning only afraid, learn be afraid of.
A picture can give you a fast meaning clue. Draw a tiny sketch, use a symbol or choose a free picture.

Understand: vocabulary in context
Read the short scene. The names and data are fictional.
Lina: I have ten new words for Friday. I read the list again and again, but I forget some words.
Sam: I test myself. I cover the answer first. Then I check.
Noor: I add a small picture and one chunk. For journey, I use a long journey.
Lina: When do you repeat the words?
Sam: Today, tomorrow, and later in the week. Difficult words come back more often.
Noor: I also listen to the words and say one sentence aloud.
Lina: I’ll try a five-minute routine.
Check the scene
Answer in short English.
- Why does Lina want a new routine?
- What does Sam do before he checks the answer?
- What does Noor add to a word?
- Which words come back more often?
- What does Noor do with audio?
Hint: Look for the key verbs: test, cover, add, repeat, listen.
German help: Suche nicht nach einer Vollübersetzung. Finde nur die Textstelle, die zur Frage passt.
Practise: build one strong vocabulary card
Choose one word from your unit.
Front: a picture, German cue or simple English clue.
Back: English word + useful chunk + one short example sentence + optional pronunciation note.
Example:
Front: ein Weg / eine Strecke Back: route – plan a route – We planned a route through the park.
Now cover the back and retrieve it.
Your five-step card test
- Look at the cue.
- Say the word without looking.
- Say the chunk.
- Make one new sentence.
- Check and correct.
If you need help, use the ladder:
Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution.
Use: speaking, reading and writing
Speaking: 60-second partner talk
Tell a partner about your revision routine.
Use these starters only if you need them:
First, I ... Then, I ... For difficult words, I ... I use pictures/audio because ... Next week, I want to ...
Your partner asks one follow-up question.
Reading: which plan is stronger?
Plan A: Mia reads 20 words for 25 minutes on Sunday. She looks at the answers all the time.
Plan B: Jay studies 8 words for 6 minutes. He closes the book, recalls the words, checks them and repeats them on different days.
Find two differences. Explain which parts of Plan B match the ideas in this course.
Short writing output
Write 60–90 words: My vocabulary revision system.
Include:
- when you revise;
- how you test yourself;
- one way you use sound or pictures;
- one example chunk;
- what you do with difficult words.
Use your own words. If you use an AI tool outside this course, check its suggestions and write the final version yourself. Do not enter private data.
Optional mediation
A German-speaking family member asks: How does your vocabulary system work?
Explain the main idea in German in 3–4 sentences. Do not translate the whole course. Keep the important ideas: first retrieve, then check; use short sessions; repeat later.
Feedback and use again
Ask a partner to give feedback with three questions:
- Is the routine clear?
- Is there real retrieval before checking?
- Is there a plan to come back to words later?
Then improve one part and test the same words again two days later.
My 5-minute routine
Use this model and change it for yourself:
- Minute 1: Quick retrieval of old words.
- Minute 2: Check and mark difficult words.
- Minute 3: Listen and repeat 3–5 words or chunks.
- Minute 4: Make two new sentences.
- Minute 5: Plan the next review.
Small and regular is the goal.
Can-do check
Give yourself one symbol for each statement: ✓ = yes, ~ = nearly, ? = not yet.
- I can retrieve a word before I look at the answer.
- I can use at least one useful chunk.
- I can use audio or a picture as a memory clue.
- I can plan reviews on different days.
- I can write and speak with some of my new words.
- I can change my routine when a word is still difficult.
Next course: E6 E - Use your vocabulary in speaking and writing
