Einleitung
Welcome! This course helps you use English with more confidence. You will listen, read, speak, write and mediate. Grammar is here to help you communicate.
Important: All names, messages, travel plans and personal details in this course are fictional. You never need to upload a recording. If you record your voice, keep it private unless you and your teacher choose otherwise. Do not send personal data to external AI tools. If you use AI with permission, check the result and write in your own words.
Course focus: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing, Mediation, Simple Present, Present Progressive, Simple Past, Present Perfect Simple, Future forms, Quantifiers and Comparison of adjectives.
Later, not now: past progressive, past perfect, conditionals, passive and reported speech. We do not study them systematically here. We also do not systematically contrast present perfect and simple past or will and going to.
The course follows the functional communication areas of the Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as a first foreign language in Classes 5/6. Grammar is used for communication, not as an end in itself.
Media warm-up: What can you already do?
Look at the picture. Speak for 30 seconds.

Try English first: What can you see? Where could the bus be going? What might you do there?
Hint: Use short chunks: I can see ... / Maybe ... / I would like to ...
German help: Beschreibe zuerst nur Sichtbares. Danach vermutest Du.
Example: I can see a red double-decker bus. Maybe it is going to the city centre.
Solution: There is no single solution. A good answer is understandable and fits the picture.
I-can goals
At the end, you can say:
- I can understand the main idea of a short video or dialogue.
- I can find key information in a short text.
- I can speak about routines, things happening now, past events, experiences and simple future ideas.
- I can write a short connected text of about 6–10 sentences.
- I can mediate the important meaning between German and English without translating every word.
- I can use common quantifiers and comparisons.
- I can ask for help and repair communication when I do not know a word.
Vorwissen-Check
Do this without notes first.
- Say three things you usually do after school.
- Say one thing you are doing today.
- Say two things you did last weekend.
- Say one thing you have done before.
- Say one plan for next weekend.
- Compare two places, games, sports or school subjects.
- Make one sentence with many or much.
Self-check: If 5–7 tasks are easy, start with the transfer tasks. If 2–4 are easy, use the normal path. If 0–1 are easy, use the help boxes.
Unit 1: Everyday English — routines and now
Notice
Read the mini-dialogue.
Maya: Hi, Leo. What do you usually do after school?
Leo: I often play basketball, but today I am helping my cousin with a project.
Maya: Nice. I usually go home by bus. Today my dad is picking me up.
Notice: usually, often often go with the simple present. Today, right now can signal the present progressive when an action is happening around now.
Understand
Simple present: Use it for routines, habits and facts.
I walk to school. She plays volleyball on Fridays.
Present progressive: Use it for actions happening now or around now.
I am reading. They are working on a poster.
Try English first: Explain the difference in one simple sentence.
Hint: routine vs. now
German help: Gewohnheit gegenüber Handlung gerade jetzt.
Example: I play football on Saturdays. Today I am playing tennis.
Solution: Use simple present for regular actions and present progressive for actions happening now or around now.
Practise in context
Complete orally.
- On Mondays, I usually ...
- Right now, I am ...
- My friend often ...
- Today, our class is ...
Then ask a partner two follow-up questions.
Unit 2: Listening and pronunciation — a past event
This British Council LearnEnglish Teens video practises the simple past with regular verbs.
Before listening
Predict: Which words might you hear in a story about a test or an important morning?
Possible words: start, wait, walk, ask, answer, finish.
While listening
First viewing: Listen for the big idea only.
Question: Is the story mainly about a routine, something happening now, or a finished past event?
Second viewing: Listen for 3 past-tense verbs.
Hint: Many regular verbs end in -ed.
Pronunciation: -ed endings
Listen again. Do not try to sound like one special accent. Aim for clear, understandable speech.
Say these words slowly, then naturally:
worked – played – wanted
Notice that -ed does not always sound the same.
Mini-practice: Read: I played a game, worked on my project and wanted a snack.
Recording: Optional only. If you record yourself, keep the file private unless you choose to share it in class.
Use: Tell a mini-story
Tell a partner 4–6 sentences about a fictional Saturday.
Start if you need help: Last Saturday, Alex got up at ... Then ... After that ... In the evening ...
For E-level transfer, change at least two details and add one reason with because.
Unit 3: Reading — a day by the sea
Read
A day in Brighton
Last Saturday, Amira and Jay visited Brighton with their youth group. They arrived in the morning and walked along the seafront. Jay took photos while Amira looked for a small gift. At lunchtime, the group ate sandwiches near the beach. The weather changed in the afternoon, but they still had fun. Amira has visited Brighton twice now, but Jay has only been there once. Next month, the group is going to plan another day trip.
Understand the text
Answer in English.
- Where did the group go?
- What did Jay do?
- What happened to the weather?
- Who has visited Brighton twice?
- What is the group going to do next month?
Hint: Underline names, time words and action verbs.
German help: Suche nicht nach einer Vollübersetzung. Finde Schlüsselwörter und passende Textstellen.
Solution: They went to Brighton. Jay took photos. The weather changed. Amira has visited Brighton twice. The group is going to plan another day trip.
Present perfect simple: experience with a link to now
Use the present perfect simple for an experience or result that is connected to now.
I have visited London. She has finished her poster. We have seen this film.
In this course, use it as a useful form. Do not build a systematic present-perfect/simple-past contrast chart.
Watch smart: Focus on examples with have/has + past participle. You do not need to master the present perfect continuous in this course.
Use: Experience circle
Ask three classmates different questions.
Have you ever visited a big city? Have you ever tried a new sport? Have you ever made food by yourself?
Give a short follow-up reaction: Really? / Me too! / That sounds fun.
Do not ask for private information.
Unit 4: Future ideas
The video shows several common future forms. In this course, notice useful examples. Do not build a full will/going-to comparison system.
Useful future language
Going to can help you talk about a plan.
We are going to visit the museum.
Will can help you make a prediction or a quick decision.
I think the trip will be fun. I’ll help you.
Present progressive can also show a fixed arrangement.
We are meeting at nine.
Speaking: Plan a class-friendly day out
Work with a partner. Choose a fictional place.
Include:
- one plan with going to
- one prediction with will
- one fixed arrangement with present progressive
- one reason with because
Example: We are meeting at the station at nine. We are going to visit a science museum. I think it will be interesting because we like experiments.
Unit 5: Quantifiers and food

Vocabulary in context
Look at the picture. Name what you can see.
Useful words: fruit, vegetables, apples, tomatoes, carrots, bags, boxes, shop, fresh.
Quantifiers
Use:
many apples much water a few bananas a little juice some bread any milk?
Try English first: Make two shopping sentences.
Hint: Countable or uncountable?
German help: many/a few meist mit zählbaren Nomen; much/a little meist mit nicht zählbaren Nomen.
Example: We need a few apples and a little juice.
Solution: Many answers are possible if the noun and quantifier fit.
Mini-mediation: At the snack table
Your German-speaking classmate says:
Wir brauchen nur wenig Saft, aber viele Äpfel. Frag bitte, ob es noch Brot gibt.
Tell the key message to an English-speaking helper.
Try English first.
Hint: You do not need every word.
German help: Übermittle die Bedeutung, nicht die Satzstruktur.
Example solution: We only need a little juice, but we need many apples. Do you have any bread left?
Unit 6: Comparisons
Notice and use
A bus is bigger than a bike. This route is shorter than the other one. The beach is more crowded in summer. My bag is as heavy as yours.
Use comparisons to make meaning clearer.
Picture talk
Compare two fictional places:
River Park: small, quiet, cheap café, 10 minutes away City Centre: large, busy, expensive cafés, 25 minutes away
Speak for 40–60 seconds. Use at least three comparisons.
E-level transfer: Finish with your own preference and a reason. Do not say one place is objectively “better” for everyone.
Unit 7: Simplified authentic listening
Optional challenge clip: A British Council LearnEnglish Teens weekend video about Manchester. The full video is above this course level, so use only a short section, subtitles if needed, and a simple task.
Task: Watch about the first 45 seconds.
- What city is mentioned?
- Why is the speaker there?
- Name one place or activity you hear.
Strategy: You do not need every word. Listen for names, places and repeated words.
Unit 8: Speaking, writing and mediation
Speaking: 60-second retell
Retell the Brighton text from memory.
Use your own words. You may look at five support words only:
Brighton – morning – photos – weather – next month
Feedback partner: Tell the speaker one thing that was clear and one useful next step.
Example feedback: Your order was clear. Next time, add one time word.
Short writing output
Write 6–10 connected sentences about a fictional weekend or day trip.
Include:
- one routine or fact
- one action happening now or around now
- two past actions
- one present-perfect experience/result
- one future idea
- one comparison or quantifier
Do not write separate grammar examples. Make one small text.
Self-edit: Check capitals, full stops, verb forms and whether the reader can follow your ideas.
Mediation: Message for a visitor
German note:
Treffpunkt ist um 9:15 Uhr vor der Schule. Bring bitte eine Trinkflasche und etwas zu essen mit. Wir fahren mit dem Bus. Gegen 16 Uhr sind wir wieder zurück.
Task: Give the useful information in English for a visiting student.
Hint: Keep names, times and actions. Leave out unnecessary wording.
Example solution: Meet us in front of the school at 9:15. Please bring a water bottle and some food. We are travelling by bus and we will be back at about 4 p.m.
Help ladder
Use only as much help as you need.
- Try English first: Say or write what you can.
- Hint: Look for a keyword, time word or sentence starter.
- German help: Use a short German clue, not a full translation.
- Example: Study one model sentence.
- Solution: Check only after your own attempt.
Then use again: close the help and make a new sentence of your own.
Feedback loop
After a speaking or writing task, use this quick routine:
- Meaning: Is the message clear?
- Language: Is one verb form or word choice worth fixing?
- Upgrade: Add one reason, detail or connector.
- Use again: Say or write the improved version once more.
Helpful feedback language:
I understood ... One strong point is ... Check ... Try adding ...
Can-do check
Rate yourself: Yes / Almost / Not yet.
- I can understand the main idea of a short English video.
- I can read a short text and find key details.
- I can speak for about one minute on a familiar topic.
- I can write a short connected text.
- I can mediate the key meaning without translating word for word.
- I can use simple present, present progressive and simple past.
- I can use present perfect simple in familiar contexts.
- I can use basic future forms without making a full contrast system.
- I can use quantifiers and comparisons.
- I can ask for help and improve after feedback.
If you choose Almost or Not yet, repeat one small task from the matching unit.
Next course
Next, move to E7 E - Fit for English 8 or another course for Classes 7/8/9. There you can expand range and independence step by step. Later courses may introduce past progressive, past perfect, conditionals, passive, reported speech and more systematic tense contrasts.
