E5 E - Reading a graded story
E5 E - Reading a graded story
Mini-Beschreibung: Read a short graded story in simple English. Find out what happens, who the characters are and which details are important. Du arbeitest in einer Lernschleife: sehen → hören → verstehen → nachsprechen → verwenden → Feedback → erneut verwenden.
Zielgruppe: Klasse 5, E-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.
Today you can: understand a short story, talk about the characters and retell the main events with simple connected sentences.

Your learning goals
- I can understand the main idea. Ich kann sagen, worum es in der Geschichte geht.
- I can find important details. Ich kann wichtige Informationen zu Figuren, Orten und Ereignissen finden.
- I can retell the story. Ich kann mit einfachen verbundenen Sätzen erzählen, was passiert.
- I can use story language. Ich kann Chunks wie At first …, Then …, But … und In the end … verwenden.
Quick start: Look and guess
Look at the picture. What could happen in a story with this object?
Bild: Lunch box.jpg von Khinmgwah, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons.
Say one idea:
- Maybe the lunch box is lost.
- Maybe a friend finds it.
- Maybe it is in the wrong place.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst nicht jedes Wort kennen. Nutze Bild, Überschrift, bekannte Wörter und den Zusammenhang.
Before you read: What do you already know?
Answer in short English sentences.
| Question | Your answer |
|---|---|
| Where do you read books at school? | I read books in ... |
| What do you take to school? | I take ... |
| What can you do when something is missing? | I can look ... / I can ask ... |
Mini-feedback: Wenn Du eine Frage mit einem einfachen Satz beantworten kannst, bist Du startklar. Wenn nicht, nutze die Satzanfänge.
New words and useful chunks
Learn only a few words before reading.
| English | Simple meaning | Hilfe |
|---|---|---|
| lunch box | a box for your food | Brotdose |
| bench | a long seat | Bank |
| library | a place with books | Bibliothek |
| missing | not there | fehlt |
| look for | try to find | suchen |
| empty | with nothing on it | leer |
| next to | very near | neben |
| in the end | at the end of the story | am Ende |
Useful chunks: Where did you have it last? – Let’s look outside. – Is this yours? – Thank you!
Listening first
Listen before you read. Eine Lehrkraft, ein Lernpartner oder eine lokal gespeicherte Aufnahme kann jedes Kapitel zweimal vorlesen.
- First listen: Close or cover the text. What is the place? Who is there?
- Second listen: Listen for one object and one action.
- Read and listen again.
- Repeat two or three short chunks aloud.
Audio-Option: Du kannst Deine eigene Stimme freiwillig aufnehmen und privat auf dem Gerät speichern. Keine Aufnahme muss hochgeladen werden. Nutze keine externe KI-Spracherkennung ohne ausdrückliche Erlaubnis. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
The graded story: The Red Lunch Box
All people, names and events in this story are fictional.
Chapter 1: A book and a bench
Bild: Library books 1.jpg, CC0, Wikimedia Commons.
Sam is at school. It is Friday. After English, Sam and Mia go to the school library. Sam has a red lunch box and a blue book.
“This book looks funny,” says Mia.
Sam smiles. “Let’s read it at break time.”
They walk outside. Sam puts the lunch box on a bench. Then they open the book and read together.
Stop and think: Where is the lunch box now?
Say it: The lunch box is on the bench.
Chapter 2: Something is missing
Bild: ParkBench.jpg von FelpMan, Public Domain, Wikimedia Commons.
After ten minutes, Sam and Mia go back inside. Sam takes the blue book, but the lunch box stays on the bench.
At lunch time, Sam opens the school bag.
“Oh no! My lunch box is missing,” Sam says.
Mia asks, “Where did you have it last?”
Sam thinks. “On the bench!”
“Let’s look outside,” says Mia.
They walk back to the bench.
Stop and think: What does Sam forget?
Say it: Sam forgets the lunch box.
Chapter 3: Found!
Bild: Books in Library.jpg, CC0, Wikimedia Commons.
The bench is empty. Sam looks under it. Nothing.
Then Ms Green comes from the library. She holds the red lunch box.
“Is this yours?” she asks.
“Yes!” says Sam.
“It was next to the bench,” says Ms Green.
“Thank you!” Sam says.
Mia smiles. They eat lunch together. Before they go, Sam puts the lunch box in the school bag.
Stop and think: Who has the lunch box?
Say it: Ms Green has the lunch box.
Story map
| Part | What happens? |
|---|---|
| At first | Sam and Mia get a book and read outside. |
| Then | Sam leaves the lunch box on the bench. |
| But | At lunch time, the lunch box is missing. |
| In the end | Ms Green gives the lunch box back to Sam. |
Your turn: Retell the story with all four chunks: At first … Then … But … In the end …
Characters and details
| Character | What we know |
|---|---|
| Sam | has a red lunch box and a blue book; forgets the lunch box; says thank you |
| Mia | reads with Sam; asks a helpful question; goes back to the bench |
| Ms Green | comes from the library; has the lunch box; gives it back |
Reading strategy: A story often gives you clues. Names tell you who. Places tell you where. Action words tell you what happens.
Grammar in the story: simple language for real communication
The story mainly uses the simple present because it is easy to follow: Sam opens the bag. Mia asks a question. They walk outside.
You also meet one short past form in direct speech: It was next to the bench. You do not need a full grammar lesson here. Understand the message first.
Use these patterns:
| Function | Example |
|---|---|
| Say where something is | The lunch box is on the bench. |
| Say what happens next | Then they go outside. |
| Ask about a missing thing | Where did you have it last? |
| React politely | Thank you! |
Mini-use: Choose one school object and say where it is: My pencil case is in my bag.
Read aloud and shadow
Read these chunks. Then listen to a partner or teacher and speak directly after the model.
- Let’s read it at break time.
- My lunch box is missing.
- Where did you have it last?
- Let’s look outside.
- Is this yours?
- Thank you!
Feedback: Can your partner understand the sentence without seeing it? If yes, continue. If not, speak a little more slowly and try again. Clear speech matters more than sounding like a native speaker.
Optional video: Read and listen to another simple story
Watch an official British Council LearnEnglish Kids story. First watch for the main idea. Then watch again and read along.
Task: Write three words you hear and one sentence about the story.
Privacy note: Das Video ist ein externer YouTube-Inhalt. Du musst nichts hochladen und kein eigenes Profil anlegen. Wenn Deine Schule externe Videos nicht nutzt, überspringe diesen Teil.
Optional transfer video
Can you understand another simple story without translating every word?
Try this: Watch once without stopping. Then say: The story is about …
Mini-review
Finish these sentences without looking back if possible.
- The main characters are …
- The important object is …
- The problem is …
- In the end …
Then check the story again. Correct one detail if necessary. This is the learning loop: use → feedback → use again.
