E10 M - Tsotsi – Character development

Mini-Beschreibung: Untersuche die Entwicklung und Entscheidungen einer zentralen Figur in Tsotsi. Nutze Belege aus Deinem eigenen Originalmaterial im Unterricht. Arbeite überwiegend auf Englisch: understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer. Keine Vollübersetzung.

Media warm-up: Watch the trailer once without taking notes. Then watch again. Write three English keywords for Tsotsi's first impression and one question about how he may change. Do not retell the whole trailer.

Content note: Tsotsi includes crime, violence and difficult family situations. Your teacher chooses suitable scenes or passages. Use only the version studied in class.

Einleitung

This course focuses on character development: how a character changes through choices, conflicts and consequences. It can be used with Athol Fugard's novel Tsotsi or Gavin Hood's 2005 film adaptation. Details differ between versions, so always check your own book, film notes or legally provided classroom material.

The key question is:

How do Tsotsi's decisions show change over time?

You do not need long plot summaries. A strong analysis usually follows this pattern:

claim → evidence → explanation → link to development

Some readers or viewers interpret Tsotsi's development as a movement from control and survival towards responsibility, empathy or even redemption. This is an interpretation, not a fact. Your task is to test it with evidence.

Learning route: English first

  1. Understand: Identify what happens in a selected scene or passage.
  2. Respond: Give a short first reaction in English.
  3. Analyse: Explain what a choice shows about the character.
  4. Communicate: Discuss, present and react spontaneously.
  5. Feedback: Use clear criteria to improve a partner's idea.
  6. Revise: Improve your own paragraph or spoken response.
  7. Transfer: Apply the method to another character or text.

I-can goals

By the end of the course, you can say:

  1. I can describe a character's development in clear B1-level English.
  2. I can support an idea with a scene, page, chapter or time reference from my own material.
  3. I can explain a turning point instead of only retelling the plot.
  4. I can discuss different interpretations politely.
  5. I can mediate key information for a clear purpose and audience.
  6. I can revise my language after feedback.

Vorwissen: 3-minute start

Without looking anything up, answer in English:

  1. What is a choice?
  2. What can make a person change?
  3. What is the difference between a reason and a consequence?
  4. How can a film show feelings without saying them directly?

Then compare with a partner. Keep your answers short.

Context: South Africa and Johannesburg

Tsotsi is set in South Africa. The film is closely connected with Johannesburg and township life. Context can help you understand setting, inequality and social pressure, but one story never represents a whole country.

Rule for cultural analysis: Describe what the work shows. Do not turn one scene into a statement about all people in South Africa.

Viewing task: After the history video, write two context facts that may help you understand the social background of the story. Then add: This context does not automatically explain every individual choice.

Work and adaptation

Athol Fugard wrote the novel Tsotsi. Gavin Hood wrote and directed the 2005 film adaptation. A film adaptation is not a copy of a novel: it can change scenes, structure, dialogue, emphasis and visual meaning.

The film received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 ceremony. For your analysis, the award is background information only. Your main evidence must come from the work itself.

Character development: a simple model

Use this table with your own references.

Phase Question Possible focus Your evidence
Beginning What seems important to Tsotsi? control, survival, status, distance scene / page / chapter / time
Challenge What disturbs his normal pattern? conflict, unexpected responsibility, fear scene / page / chapter / time
Turning point Which choice shows a possible change? hesitation, care, asking for help, restraint scene / page / chapter / time
Later stage What can he do now that he did not do before? empathy, responsibility, acceptance of consequence scene / page / chapter / time

Do not copy this table as a finished interpretation. Replace the possible focus with what your own material actually supports.

Reading: evidence from your original material

Choose one short passage from the class edition. Do not upload or reproduce full copyrighted pages.

  1. Read once for gist: What is happening?
  2. Read again: Mark one choice, one emotion clue and one consequence.
  3. Add one precise reference from your edition.
  4. Write one sentence: This moment suggests that Tsotsi ... because ...
  5. Add one explanation: Compared with an earlier moment, ...

Evidence can be a short quotation allowed by your teacher, a paraphrased action, a narrative detail or a precise scene reference.

Listening and viewing

For a film scene selected by your teacher:

  1. First viewing: focus on action and relationship.
  2. Second viewing: focus on voice, silence, facial expression, camera distance or music.
  3. Third step: explain how one film technique supports your interpretation of the character.

Useful sentence starter:

The scene suggests a change because ... The camera / sound / acting supports this by ...

Aussprache und Verständlichkeit

Focus on stress and clear key words, not accent imitation.

development → stress the second syllable responsibility → stress the fourth syllable evidence → stress the first syllable consequence → stress the first syllable interpretation → stress the fourth syllable

Say a 20-second analysis aloud. Aim for clear chunks:

My claim is ... / My evidence is ... / This shows ... / Therefore ...

Recording is optional. If you record yourself, keep the file private unless you actively choose to share it in a protected school setting. No public upload is required.

Speaking: discuss and react

Work in pairs. Student A makes one claim about Tsotsi's development. Student B must do one of three things:

  1. agree and add evidence,
  2. partly agree and add a limitation,
  3. disagree and give different evidence.

Useful phrases:

I see your point, but ... I agree up to a point because ... My evidence suggests something different ... Can you show where you see that in the text or scene?

Then switch roles.

Writing: evidence paragraph

Write about 120–160 words.

Task: Explain one important step in Tsotsi's development.

Use this structure:

Claim: What changes? Evidence: Which scene or passage supports your idea? Explain: Why does this detail matter? Link: How is this different from an earlier moment?

Do not use a long summary. Keep your own wording.

Writing range: change the text type

Use the same character evidence in different forms.

  1. Informal email: Explain your interpretation to a classmate in about 80 words.
  2. Formal email: Write to a fictional school film-club coordinator and suggest one discussion question about character development.
  3. Report: Summarise the result of a class debate in a neutral style.
  4. Opinion article: Write a short text on Can people change through responsibility? and connect the idea to Tsotsi.
  5. Fictional profile: Create a fictional character profile based only on the work. Do not use real personal data.

Mediation: purpose before translation

Situation: A German-speaking classmate has missed the lesson. In about 60–80 English words, explain the main idea of today's character-development discussion so the classmate can take part next time.

Do not translate sentence by sentence. Select only the information the classmate needs.

Functional grammar

Function Useful grammar Example
Analyse a work simple present Tsotsi reacts differently in this scene.
Refer to earlier plot events simple past Earlier, he refused to explain himself.
Give reasons because / since This matters because he accepts responsibility.
Show contrast although / however Although he is afraid, he makes a different choice.
Express a careful interpretation may / might / seems to This may show growing empathy.

Help: less support, only when needed

Level 1 – key words: choice, motive, evidence, consequence, change. Level 2 – sentence frame: At first ... Later ... This change becomes clear when ... Level 3 – analysis frame: The detail ... suggests ... because ... Compared with ..., this shows ...

Try without a frame first. Use help only if you need it.

Feedback and revision

Partner feedback should be short and useful.

Check Feedback question
Claim Is the main idea clear?
Evidence Is there a precise reference?
Explanation Does the writer explain why the evidence matters?
Comparison Is change over time visible?
Language Can the reader understand the message easily?

Give two strengths and one question. Then revise at least two sentences.

Fehleranalyse

Correct the problem and explain the rule.

  1. He decide to help. → Check the third-person singular.
  2. This evidence show ... → Check subject-verb agreement.
  3. An evidence is ... → Remember that evidence is usually uncountable.
  4. He changes because of he feels responsible. → Choose because + clause or because of + noun.
  5. In the scene he changed. → For literary analysis, simple present is usually the default.

Transfer

Choose another fictional character from a book, film or series studied in school. Use the same four-step method:

claim → evidence → explanation → link to development

Then compare: Which character changes because of a single turning point, and which changes through several smaller decisions?

Can-do check

I can ... not yet partly yes
identify a turning point □ □ □
use evidence from my own material □ □ □
explain a choice and a consequence □ □ □
discuss another interpretation □ □ □
revise after feedback □ □ □

If you tick not yet twice or more, repeat the Reading and Writing sections with a new short scene.

Prüfungsbezug Baden-Württemberg

Stand der Prüfungshinweise in diesem Kurs: 2. Oktober 2026.

The Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as a first foreign language in Sekundarstufe I includes listening/viewing, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, language resources and text/media competence in Klasse 10. The revised 2025 version is being introduced by cohort; for learners already beyond Klasse 7 before school year 2025/2026, the previous 2016 version continues during the transition.

For the 2027 Realschulabschluss, the official communication test in the compulsory foreign language is scheduled for 22 February to 2 March 2027. The written English examination is scheduled for 3 May 2027. The current communication-test framework includes monologic speaking, dialogic speaking and mediation. It gives about 15 minutes per student overall, with the three parts taking roughly equal time and no separate preparation time for the individual parts.

This course practises these competences, but it is not official exam material. Always check current conditions before an assessment.

  1. Official curriculum: English as first foreign language
  2. Official information on final examinations
  3. Official examination dates

Responsible use of AI and digital tools

  1. Check AI-generated facts and sources before using them.
  2. Keep your own wording and your own analysis.
  3. Do not upload copyrighted pages, film clips or classmates' work to external AI tools without permission.
  4. Do not enter personal data.
  5. Any profile or application task must use a fictional person.
  6. Understandability is more important than accent imitation.
  7. Avoid cultural stereotypes and unsupported generalisations.
