E10 G - Mediate work, travel and community information

Mini-Beschreibung: Übertrage zentrale Informationen zu workplace, volunteer programme, travel oder community event adressatengerecht zwischen Deutsch und Englisch. Du wählst wichtige Informationen aus, erklärst sie klar und passt Ton und Umfang an. Keine Vollübersetzung.

Your mission: Understand the message. Find the key facts. Tell the right person what they need to know.

So arbeitest Du in diesem Kurs

English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Lade nichts ungefragt hoch. Gib persönliche Texte nicht ohne Erlaubnis an externe KI-Dienste weiter. Prüfe KI-Angaben und Quellen. Bewahre Deine eigene Formulierung.

Bildungsplan-Bezug Baden-Württemberg

I-can-Ziele

Am Ende kannst Du sagen:

  1. I can find key information in short texts, notices and videos.
  2. I can mediate key facts between German and English without translating every sentence.
  3. I can adapt my message to a friend, visitor, colleague or organiser.
  4. I can ask for clarification when information is missing.
  5. I can write a clear message or email with time, place, task and next step.
  6. I can check and revise numbers, dates, tone and important grammar.

Vorwissen

Quick check:

  1. What information do you usually need for a job shift?
  2. What do volunteers need before an event?
  3. Which travel facts are important when a train is delayed?
  4. What does a visitor need to know about a community event?

Help: Think of who – what – when – where – what to do.

Medien-Einstieg: four real-life contexts

Look at the four images above. Say one short sentence for each context.

Sentence starters: This could be about ... / People may need information about ... / The key fact could be ...

1 English first – understand

Listening and viewing: workplace

Watch only a short part first. Listen for job, voluntary work, current position, skills. You do not need every word.

Two-pass strategy:

  1. First pass: What is the situation?
  2. Second pass: Write three key facts.
  3. Then: Tell a German classmate the three facts in simple German. Do not translate the dialogue.

Listening and viewing: travel

Use the video as listening support for asking for directions. First listen without stopping. Then listen again and note useful chunks.

Focus: destination, direction, transport, polite question.

Reading: four short information cards

All organisations, names and situations below are fictional.

Card A – Workplace notice

Green Desk Café: Staff meeting on Thursday at 4:15 pm in Room 2. The meeting will take about 30 minutes. Please bring your new shift plan. If you cannot come, message Ms Taylor before Wednesday, 6 pm. On Friday, the café opens one hour later because of maintenance.

Task: Dein deutscher Freund Sam arbeitet dort. Er fragt nur: Wann ist das Treffen? Was soll er mitbringen? Was soll er tun, wenn er nicht kommen kann? Antworte auf Deutsch in drei klaren Sätzen.

Card B – Volunteer programme

Jugendzentrum Riverside sucht Helferinnen und Helfer für den Community Day am Samstag. Treffpunkt ist um 9:30 Uhr am Haupteingang. Die Schicht endet um 13:00 Uhr. Aufgaben: Gäste begrüßen, Wasser ausgeben und Schilder aufstellen. Bequeme Schuhe sind wichtig. Essen wird gestellt. Anmeldung bis Mittwoch per E-Mail.

Task: Your English exchange partner wants to help. Give the useful information in simple English. Do not translate every sentence.

Card C – Travel update

Train 814 to Bristol is delayed by 25 minutes. It now leaves from platform 7, not platform 4. Passengers for Bath can stay on the train. The café near platform 7 closes at 8 pm. Please check the station board again before boarding.

Task: An English visitor asks about the event. Explain time, place, activities and the rain plan in English.

2 Respond – first useful message

Use this mini-plan:

  1. Audience: Who needs the information?
  2. Purpose: What does the person want to know?
  3. Key facts: Choose three to five facts.
  4. Language: Use short, natural sentences.
  5. Action: End with the next step if there is one.

Useful English: The meeting is at ... / You need to ... / You can ... / If you cannot come, ... / The train now leaves from ... / The event will move to ...

Useful German: Das Wichtigste ist ... / Du musst ... / Du kannst ... / Wenn du nicht kommen kannst, ... / Der Zug fährt jetzt von ...

3 Analyse – select, do not translate

Mediation is not a word-for-word translation. Your message has a job.

Ask:

  1. What does the receiver already know?
  2. Which facts change what the receiver must do?
  3. Which details can I leave out?
  4. Do I need to explain a word instead of translating it?

Example: A visitor asks only how to help at the event. Then the music programme is less important than meeting time, task, clothes and contact.

Context vocabulary

English Deutsch Use it for
shift Schicht work
deadline Frist work / application
volunteer freiwillige Helferin / freiwilliger Helfer community
sign up sich anmelden programme
venue Veranstaltungsort event
platform Bahnsteig travel
delay Verspätung travel
available verfügbar work / service
fee Gebühr event / travel

Do not learn every word at once. First recognise it. Then use only the words needed for your task.

Aussprache: verständlich vor akzentfrei

Say the words slowly, then in a short phrase:

  1. volunTEER – a volunteer team
  2. SHIFT – an early shift
  3. VENue – the event venue
  4. PLATform – platform seven
  5. DEADline – the deadline is Wednesday

Speak clearly. A natural accent is fine. The goal is to be understood.

4 Communicate – ask, explain, present

Speaking

Work with a partner. One person has the source information. The other person is the receiver.

Receiver prompts: Sorry, what time exactly? / Where do I need to go? / Do I have to bring anything? / What happens if it rains?

Mediator prompts: The key point is ... / You need to ... / You do not need to ... / Let me check the time. / I am not sure about that detail.

Writing

Write a short email of about 70–100 words.

Situation: A German youth centre has sent information about a volunteer day. Your English-speaking friend wants to join.

Use this structure:

  1. Greeting
  2. Reason for writing
  3. Three to five key facts
  4. One useful next step
  5. Friendly closing

Do not invent facts. If a detail is missing, say: The information does not say.

Simple application practice

Use only fictional data.

Fictional profile: Alex Reed, 16, likes teamwork, helps at school events, can work on Saturdays, speaks German and English.

Write 60–80 words for a simple volunteer application. Explain why Alex is interested, what Alex can do and when Alex is available.

Functional grammar – accuracy in steps

Step 1: time, date and place

Check numbers carefully.

Thursday at 4:15 pm. The event starts at 6 pm. The train leaves from platform 7.

Accuracy target: time and place must be correct.

Step 2: obligation and possibility

Use:

  1. must / have to for a strong requirement: You have to sign up by Wednesday.
  2. can for possibility: You can help at the entrance.
  3. should for advice: You should check the board again.

Accuracy target: Do not turn advice into a rule.

Step 3: polite questions

Could you tell me where the meeting is? Do you know what time the shift ends? Could you say that again, please?

Accuracy target: Ask when information is missing instead of guessing.

Step 4: if for a condition

If you cannot come, message the organiser. If it rains, the event will move indoors.

Accuracy target: Keep the condition and result clear.

5 Feedback

Use 2 stars and 1 next step.

Check:

  1. I selected relevant information.
  2. I kept names, numbers, dates and places correct.
  3. I used simple language.
  4. I matched the receiver.
  5. I did not translate everything.
  6. I did not add facts.

Give feedback on the message, not on the speaker's accent.

6 Revise

Revise in this order:

  1. Facts first: Correct wrong or missing key information.
  2. Structure next: Put the most useful fact early.
  3. Language next: Make long sentences shorter.
  4. Accuracy last: Check must / can / should, if-clauses, times and spelling.

Keep your first version. Mark two changes that made the message clearer.

Fehleranalyse

Find the problem and improve it.

Source: The shift ends at 1 pm. Food is provided.

Weak mediation: You work until 3 pm and you must bring lunch.

Problems:

  1. A time was changed.
  2. A fact was reversed.
  3. The receiver may make a wrong plan.

Better: Your shift ends at 1 pm. You do not need to bring lunch because food is provided.

7 Transfer

Choose one new situation:

  1. A workplace changes a shift at short notice.
  2. A volunteer project changes the meeting point.
  3. A train changes platform.
  4. A community event moves indoors.

Create a short source note in one language. A partner mediates only the key information into the other language.

Rule: No full translation. The receiver decides what information is relevant.

Media lab: listen, notice, compare

The following workplace video has several speakers. Use only a short section. Listen twice and compare how questions and answers are structured.

Task: Note one question, one condition and one next step in your own words. Do not copy the transcript.

Fair and safe communication

People and communities are diverse. Do not explain behaviour with simple cultural stereotypes. Describe the concrete situation instead.

For media tasks:

  1. Use public learning media or your own private practice material.
  2. Recordings are voluntary.
  3. Do not upload classmates without permission.
  4. Check source, date and context before using AI-generated information.
  5. Keep your own text and show what you changed after feedback.

Can-do-Check

Mark: yes – almost – not yet.

Can-do yes almost not yet
I can find the main point.
I can choose relevant facts for one receiver.
I can mediate between German and English without full translation.
I can ask when information is missing.
I can write a short structured email.
I can check facts, tone and simple grammar.
