E10 G - Follow a short discussion
E10 G - Follow a short discussion
Mini-Beschreibung: Follow a short discussion and spot agreement, disagreement, main arguments and the final decision.

English first: Listen for the big picture first. You do not need every word.
Deutsch als Hilfe: Verstehe zuerst das Thema und die Positionen. Sichere Details erst beim zweiten Hören. Eine Vollübersetzung ist nicht nötig.
Einleitung
In this aiMOOC, you learn how to follow a short English discussion with several speakers. The language is clear, the topic is familiar and the tasks guide you step by step.
Learning path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.
Lehrplanbezug Baden-Württemberg: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 10, G-Niveau. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Hör-/Hörsehverstehen, an Gesprächen teilnehmen, Wortschatz, Aussprache, Schreiben und bei Bedarf Sprachmittlung.
G-mode: short sections, common vocabulary, clear context, phrase support, moderate standard speech, several voices, replay and pause.
Medien-Einstieg

Watch the video once. Do not stop after every unknown word. Listen for phrases that show agreement or disagreement.
Quick task: Write down one phrase for agreement and one phrase for disagreement.
Help: Listen for short chunks such as I agree ..., I see your point ... or I'm not so sure ....
I-can-Ziele
| I can ... | Hilfe |
|---|---|
| follow the topic of a short discussion. | What are they talking about? |
| spot agreement and disagreement. | Listen for agree, but, not sure. |
| find main arguments. | Ask: Why does the speaker think this? |
| identify the final decision. | Listen for So ..., We will ..., Let's .... |
| respond with a short reason. | I agree because ... |
| ask for clarification. | Do you mean ...? |
Vorwissen aktivieren

Try these questions in English first.
| Prompt | Your idea |
|---|---|
| How can you say yes to an idea? | ... |
| How can you disagree politely? | ... |
| How can you ask for a reason? | ... |
Support: agreement = same view; disagreement = different view; reason = why.
Understand
Listening and Viewing 1: agreement and disagreement
Watch the British Council video a second time.
- First replay: Listen only for agreement and disagreement.
- Second replay: Pause when needed and note one reason.
- Optional support: Turn on captions only after you have tried listening.
Do not translate every sentence.
Listening and Viewing 2: several voices

This BBC Learning English scene contains several speakers and a clear disagreement.
First listen: What is the general problem?
Second listen: Who supports an idea? Who disagrees? What reason do you hear?
Third listen if needed: What is the final decision?
G-level strategy: One useful detail is enough at first. Replay is allowed.
Reading: a short fictional discussion
The names and situation below are fictional.
Situation: Four students are planning the final part of an English project.
| Speaker | What they say |
|---|---|
| Emma | Let's make a short video for our project. It can show clear examples. |
| Leo | I agree that a video is clear, but it takes a lot of time. |
| Sam | I think a live presentation is better because we can answer questions. |
| Mia | I'm not sure about that. Some people are nervous. What about a short video plus a live introduction? |
| Leo | That sounds fair. We can keep the video to three minutes. |
| Emma | I agree. We get clear examples and we can still answer questions. |
| Sam | Okay. So our final decision is: a three-minute video, a two-minute live introduction and questions at the end. |
Read for meaning: Find one agreement, one disagreement, two reasons and the final decision.
Discussion map
Use this simple grid while listening or reading.
| Speaker | Position | Main reason | Reaction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emma | short video | clear examples | supported later |
| Leo | video is useful, but time matters | takes time | accepts compromise |
| Sam | live presentation | questions are possible | accepts final plan |
| Mia | mix both ideas | less pressure and clear format | suggests compromise |
Main idea: A good listener follows the relation between ideas, not every single word.
Context vocabulary
Kontextwortschatz
| English | Meaning in context | Kurzhilfe |
|---|---|---|
| agreement | showing the same opinion | Zustimmung |
| disagreement | showing a different opinion | Widerspruch |
| point | an idea or opinion | Punkt / Ansicht |
| reason | why somebody thinks something | Grund |
| argument | a reason for or against an idea | Argument |
| decision | what the group finally chooses | Entscheidung |
| compromise | a solution that combines ideas | Kompromiss |
Useful chunks: Learn complete phrases, not single words only.
| Function | Phrase |
|---|---|
| agree | I agree with that. |
| agree + reason | I agree because ... |
| disagree politely | I see your point, but ... |
| disagree carefully | I'm not so sure about that. |
| ask for a reason | Why do you think that? |
| clarify | Do you mean ...? |
| suggest | What about ...? |
| close the discussion | So our final decision is ... |
Aussprache und Verständlichkeit
Goal: Be easy to understand. Accent-free speech is not the goal.
Say these chunks slowly first, then at natural speed.
- I a-GREE. Stress the last part of agree.
- I SEE your point, but ... Stress the key words.
- What ABOUT ...? Keep the question clear.
- Our final de-CI-sion is ... Stress the important information.
Try a short echo practice: listen → pause → repeat one chunk → compare clarity.
Recording is optional. If you record, keep it private unless you deliberately choose to share it.
Respond
Short reactions
Choose one reaction and add one short reason.
| Opinion | Start your answer |
|---|---|
| A short video is better. | I agree because ... |
| A live talk is easier. | I'm not so sure because ... |
| A mixed format is fair. | I see your point, and ... |
G-level help: One clear reason is enough.
Asking for clarification
Sometimes you understand the topic but not one detail. Ask instead of guessing.
Useful questions:
- Do you mean a short video?
- Can you say that again, please?
- Why do you think that?
- What is the final plan?
Analyse
Agreement, disagreement, argument, decision
Use four labels.
| Label | Question | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Agreement | Who supports an idea? | agree, good point, sounds fair |
| Disagreement | Who has a different view? | but, not sure, disagree |
| Main argument | Why? | because, reason, example |
| Final decision | What will happen? | so, final decision, we will |
Important: An opinion is not the same as an argument. An argument gives a reason.
Functional grammar
You only need a few structures.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| opinion | I think + sentence | I think a live talk is better. |
| reason | because + subject + verb | It is better because we can answer questions. |
| contrast | idea + but + different idea | The video is clear, but it takes time. |
| suggestion | We could / We should + verb | We could use both ideas. |
| decision | So we will + verb | So we will make a short video. |
Accuracy focus 1: Say I agree, not I am agree.
Accuracy focus 2: After because, use a complete idea: because it is clear.
Accuracy focus 3: After should or could, use the basic verb: should make, could use.
Communicate
Speaking: a three-turn discussion
Work with two or three people. All roles are fictional.
Topic: How should a class present a project: poster, short video or live talk?
| Turn | What to do | Phrase help |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Give your view. | I think ... because ... |
| 2 | React to another view. | I agree ... / I see your point, but ... |
| 3 | Move toward a decision. | What about ...? / So we will ... |
Communication first: Speak clearly, ask if you do not understand and give one reason. Do not worry about having a perfect accent.
Writing: short discussion note
Write about 60–80 words.
Use this order:
- Topic: What was the discussion about?
- View A: What did one person want, and why?
- View B: What was another view?
- Decision: What did the group finally decide?
Writing frame: The group discussed ... One person thought ... because ... Another person said ... In the end, they decided to ...
Keep your own first draft. Revision should improve your text, not replace it.
Mediation: meaning, not full translation
A German-speaking classmate missed the discussion. Explain the key result in two or three German sentences.
Do not translate line by line. Include the topic, one important argument and the final decision.
Feedback
Peer or self-feedback
Use short feedback.
| Check | Yes / almost / not yet |
|---|---|
| I understood the topic. | ... |
| I found at least two positions. | ... |
| I found one reason. | ... |
| I found the final decision. | ... |
| My response is polite and clear. | ... |
Feedback sentence: Your main idea is clear. Check ...
Fehleranalyse
Correct the sentence before you read the better version.
| Problem | Better version | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| I am agree with Mia. | I agree with Mia. | agree is a verb |
| I agree because is clear. | I agree because it is clear. | complete clause |
| We should to make a video. | We should make a video. | base verb after should |
| I disagree. You are wrong. | I see your point, but I disagree because ... | polite discussion language |
Revision step: Improve one problem at a time: meaning → reason → useful phrase → accuracy.
Responsible digital work
This course does not require an external AI service.
If digital language support is explicitly allowed at school, check suggestions against a trusted dictionary, your course material or your teacher. Keep your own draft and mark important changes.
Do not upload personal audio, private profiles or real applications without clear consent. Recordings are voluntary and can stay private.
Transfer
New short discussion

Imagine a new topic: Should the class create a poster or a short podcast for project day?
Use the same four questions:
- Who agrees?
- Who disagrees?
- What are the main reasons?
- What is the final decision?
Then use one phrase to respond.
Authentic transfer media
The following short Wikimedia Commons video shows students speaking about Wikipedia. Use it only for global listening first.
Datei:Students talk about Wikipedia.webm
First viewing: What is the general topic?
Second viewing: Can you identify one opinion or reason?
Do not expect yourself to produce every word you can understand.
Can-do-Check
| I can ... | yes | almost | not yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| follow the topic of a short discussion. | □ | □ | □ |
| hear agreement and disagreement. | □ | □ | □ |
| identify one or two main arguments. | □ | □ | □ |
| find the final decision. | □ | □ | □ |
