E10 G - Explain a culture-specific concept

Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Explain a culture-specific concept briefly when a direct translation is not enough. You learn to add the context a listener or reader needs.

English first: Look, think, then speak. Do not translate everything.

Look first: What can you see? What might prom mean in this situation? Write three English keywords.

Second clue: This photo was taken on Boxing Day in Canada. What extra information would a German visitor need?

I can ...

  1. I can identify a culture-specific concept in a short text or video.
  2. I can explain what it is, where it is used and why it matters.
  3. I can say that customs vary and avoid culture clichés.
  4. I can ask for clarification and improve my explanation after feedback.
  5. I can mediate the key meaning without translating a whole text.

G-level focus: short connected explanations, frequent vocabulary, clear context and useful sentence starters. The Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as a first foreign language in class 10 names identifying and describing culture-specific terms as a G-level mediation skill.

Vorwissen: What do you already know?

Match each word with one idea in your head: Prom, High School, Homecoming, Boxing Day, Thanksgiving. You do not need a perfect definition yet.

Think – pair – share: Choose one term. Say: I think it is ... Then add: I am not sure about ...

English first: What is a culture-specific concept?

A culture-specific concept is a word or idea that needs cultural context. A direct translation may be too short, misleading or incomplete.

Useful pattern: X is a ... in ... . It usually happens ... . People ... . It matters because ... . It is not exactly the same as ... .

Important: Culture is not a fixed rule. Use words such as often, many, some, can and may. People and places are diverse.

Model 1: prom

A prom is a formal school dance in the United States, usually for older high-school students and often near the end of the school year. Schools and students celebrate it in different ways. It can be compared with an Abiball, but the school system, timing and traditions are not exactly the same.

Before viewing: Read only the title. Predict three words.

First viewing – gist: What is the video mainly about: clothes, a school event, or a sports competition?

Second viewing – detail: Note three facts about prom. Replay short parts if needed. Use subtitles only after your first try.

Respond: Complete one sentence: Prom is ...

Model 2: Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a public or bank holiday on 26 December in the United Kingdom and several other countries, especially in parts of the Commonwealth. Today, people may spend the day with family, watch sport, rest or shop. Customs vary. The term is not about the sport of boxing.

Listening help: Listen for date – place – activity. Stop after each useful idea. Repeat one short part.

Model 3: Thanksgiving

Modern U.S. Thanksgiving is a federal holiday on the fourth Thursday in November. Many people meet family or friends and share food, but celebrations differ. When you explain its history, check more than one perspective and include Indigenous perspectives instead of telling one simple story.

Viewing task: Watch a short section. Listen for three familiar words first. On a second viewing, add one new fact. You do not need to understand every word.

Understand

Reading: Why a translation can be too short

Short text: Homecoming is a tradition at some U.S. high schools and colleges. It welcomes former students back and often includes a sports game or other school events. Some schools also have a parade or a dance. The details vary. So the word "homecoming" needs more explanation than the direct German word "Heimkehr".

Reading task: Find four parts: what – where – typical activity – variation.

Check: Which sentence protects us from a culture cliché?

A second example: high school

A U.S. high school is a type of secondary school, often including grades 9 to 12. School structures can vary. It is not simply the same as a German Gymnasium.

Quick response: Explain high school in two English sentences without using a full German translation.

Respond

Choose one model term. Give a four-sentence response:

X is ... . It is used / celebrated in ... . People often / may ... . It is not exactly the same as ... .

Then your partner asks one question: What do you mean by ...? or Can you give an example?

Context vocabulary

English tool Simple meaning Mini-Hilfe
refers to tells what a word means in this context bezieht sich auf
takes place happens at a time or place findet statt
is common in is often found in ist verbreitet in
is connected with has a link to hängt zusammen mit
unlike shows an important difference anders als
varies is not the same everywhere variiert
for example gives one helpful case zum Beispiel
in this context limits the meaning in diesem Zusammenhang

No full translation: Use the German mini-help only when you are stuck. Return to English immediately.

Pronunciation: clear before perfect

Listen to Boxing Day. Repeat once. Then practise these words slowly: concept – context – culture – specific – explain – tradition.

Goal: Be understandable. A clear message is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Functional grammar: small steps

Accuracy goal Use Model
Step A: present simple give facts Prom is a school event. It takes place near the end of the school year.
Step B: because give a reason The term needs context because a direct translation is incomplete.
Step C: that / which add one short detail Homecoming is an event that can include a game or dance.

Keep it simple: A correct short sentence is better than a long unclear sentence.

Communicate

Speaking: explain in 30 seconds

Choose prom, Boxing Day, homecoming or high school.

Use this order:

  1. Name it: X is ...
  2. Place it: It is used / celebrated in ...
  3. Add context: People often / may ...
  4. Explain importance: It matters because ...
  5. Limit the claim: It can vary ... or It is not exactly the same as ...

Ask for help: Could you explain that? – Do you mean ...? – Can you give an example?

Recording option: Audio recording is voluntary and should stay private unless you choose otherwise. Do not upload recordings without clear permission.

Writing: short exchange email

Situation: A fictional exchange student asks: What does "Abiball" mean?

Write 60–80 words in English. Use a greeting, a short explanation and a closing. Do not translate a whole German text. Explain only what the reader needs.

Writing frame: Hi Sam, "Abiball" is ... in Germany. It usually ... . Students ... . It can be compared with ... , but ... . I hope that helps. Best, Alex

Only use fictional names and profiles in school tasks.

Mediation: key meaning, not every word

Your English-speaking visitor reads the German word Ausbildungsplatz. Explain the idea in simple English. Include:

  1. what it is,
  2. who it is for,
  3. one useful context,
  4. one difference from a normal school place.

Do not produce a line-by-line translation.

Feedback

Peer feedback: 3 checks

Give short feedback in English.

  1. Clear: I understand what the concept is.
  2. Context: You gave place, people or situation.
  3. Careful: You used often, some, many, may or can when needed.

Then add one next step: Please add an example. / Please explain the difference. / Please make this sentence shorter.

Error analysis: fix the message

Problem Why? Better version
Prom is Abiball. too direct Prom is a formal U.S. school dance. It can be compared with an Abiball, but it is not exactly the same.
All Americans go to prom. culture cliché Many U.S. schools hold proms, but not every student attends.
Boxing Day is boxing. wrong meaning Boxing Day is a holiday on 26 December in the UK and several other countries.
People goes shopping. grammar People go shopping.

Revise: Change one of your own sentences after feedback. Keep both versions so you can see your progress.

Source and AI check

When you use a website or AI-supported information, check place, date, variation and source. Compare important claims with a reliable source. Keep your own draft and your revised version.

No external AI tool is needed for this course. Do not send private recordings, personal data or unpublished class material to external services.

Revise

Take your first explanation and improve one thing only:

  1. add missing context,
  2. replace an overgeneralisation,
  3. fix one central grammar error,
  4. or make one sentence shorter.

Keep the first and second version. Read the new version aloud to a partner if you want.

Transfer

Explain one German culture-specific term to an English-speaking visitor: Schultüte, Verein, Abiball or Ausbildungsplatz. Use English first and add only the context needed for understanding.

Transfer sentence starter: In Germany, ... is ... . It is used when ... . People may ... . It is not exactly the same as ... .
