E10-E-Sprachmodus: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer. Nutze Deutsch nur gezielt als Hilfe oder für Mediation. Vermeide Vollübersetzungen.

Start task – 90 seconds: Look at the image. What decisions might learners have to make? Which English skills could matter for different education or career routes? Give two possible answers in English.
While watching: Note three ideas about becoming a better learner. Then choose one idea that could improve your own English learning.
Einleitung
This course is not a fixed checklist. It is a learning road map. You use evidence from your own work to decide what to practise, how to practise it and when to review progress.
The course follows the Klasse-10 competence areas of English as a first foreign language in Baden-Württemberg and especially the E-level focus on independent language learning, authentic input, coherent communication, media analysis, source evaluation and purpose-based mediation. Can-do statements are used as learning tools, not as certificates.
Course rule: Better evidence beats a vague feeling such as “I am bad at English”.
Privacy rule: Speaking recordings are optional and stay private or inside the school system. No public upload is required. Applications and personal profiles used in tasks are fictional. Do not send personal data to external AI systems.
AI rule: AI output is a suggestion, not a source of truth. Check names, dates, quotations, statistics and links. Keep your own drafts and your own voice.
Standards und Orientierung
Der Kurs orientiert sich an:

- Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg – Sprachlernkompetenz
- Council of Europe – CEFR Can-do descriptors
- Council of Europe – European Language Portfolio / Language Passport

I-can-Ziele
| I can ... | Evidence I can collect |
|---|---|
| understand main ideas and relevant details in authentic spoken English | listening notes plus a short response |
| compare two texts or media sources | comparison grid with claim, evidence, perspective and purpose |
| discuss an issue and refer to evidence | partner discussion, teacher observation or optional private audio |
| write a coherent text for a clear audience and purpose | first draft, feedback and revised version |
| mediate relevant information instead of translating everything | purpose-based message for a named addressee |
| check the reliability and rights of a source | source check with author, date, evidence and licence |
| identify strengths and priorities from my own work | Can-do review with portfolio evidence |
| choose a realistic next learning step for my education route | personal four-week plan and follow-up choice |

Important: A level diagram is only orientation. Your next step comes from concrete evidence in listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation and media work.
Portfolio: Deine Belege statt Bauchgefühl

Keep one portfolio folder. It may be on paper or in a school-approved digital system.
| Portfolio evidence | What it shows |
|---|---|
| baseline task | where you started |
| listening or viewing notes | how you extract meaning |
| reading and source comparison | how you analyse information |
| speaking evidence | how clearly you communicate |
| two writing drafts | how you revise |
| feedback note | how you use advice |
| mediation task | how you select for purpose and audience |
| Can-do review | how you decide the next step |
| transfer task | how you use the skill in a new context |
Can-do rhythm: Review your portfolio after each learning sprint, usually every one or two weeks. Mark each target as secure, developing or next priority and add one piece of evidence.
Vorwissen und Kompetenzprofil
Do a short baseline before choosing goals. Do not study for it first.
| Skill | Baseline task | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Listening / Viewing | watch a 3–6 minute authentic English clip and note the main idea plus key details | notes |
| Reading | read an authentic text and identify claim, evidence, tone and one open question | reading grid |
| Speaking | give a 90-second response to a familiar issue | live response, teacher note or optional private audio |
| Writing | write a 180–220 word comment or email for a clear audience | first draft |
| Mediation | pass on selected information from a short German school text to an English-speaking addressee | message |
| Media literacy | check one English source for reliability, purpose and evidence | source card |
Profile question: Which two skills currently limit what you want to do next? Choose no more than two priorities for the first sprint.

Turn each priority into a usable target:
Weak target: “Improve English.”
Better target: “By the next review, I can follow the main argument of a six-minute English video and support my summary with five accurate notes.”
Dein Lernpfad
| Target | Practice | Feedback | Review evidence | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| example: clearer discussion | two short evidence-based conversations | peer plus teacher note | fewer unclear claims | use the skill in a new topic |
| your target 1 | ... | ... | ... | ... |
| your target 2 | ... | ... | ... | ... |
Rule: Practise the weakest useful link, not the rarest word.
Listening and Viewing
Three-pass method
- First pass: Listen for the main idea. Do not stop for every unknown word.
- Second pass: Take selective notes. Separate main points from examples.
- Third pass: Check difficult moments. Use English subtitles only when they help you verify meaning.

Response task: In 80–100 words, explain which note-taking strategy is most useful for you and why.
Analysis task: Which details in the video are advice, examples or reasons? How do visuals and voice support the message?
Transfer task: Use the same note-taking method with a different English video chosen by your teacher or from a school-approved source.
Listening challenge: natural spoken English
Before watching, predict two reasons why learners may feel nervous when speaking another language. After watching, compare your predictions with the video.
Then write:
- one idea you understood immediately
- one detail you needed to check
- one useful phrase
- one response of your own
Do not translate the whole transcript.
Reading
Use purpose before detail. Decide first why you are reading.
| Reading purpose | Strategy |
|---|---|
| get the main argument | skim title, opening, topic sentences and conclusion |
| find one fact | scan for names, dates or key terms |
| evaluate a claim | read evidence and source information closely |
| compare perspectives | track what each source includes, emphasises or leaves out |
Text comparison task: Use two age-appropriate authentic English sources on the same topic. Compare:
- main claim
- evidence
- audience
- tone
- perspective
- missing information
- reliability
Your final response should say where the sources agree, where they differ and which evidence is stronger. Do not rank sources only by design or popularity.
Kontextwortschatz
Learn language inside a task.
| Function | Useful language |
|---|---|
| set a goal | target, priority, next step, evidence of progress |
| compare | similarly, in contrast, whereas, both sources |
| use evidence | according to, the example shows, the source states |
| qualify a claim | may, might, seems, in this context |
| give feedback | clear because, could be more precise, next revise |
| reflect | I can now, I still need, my evidence is |
Vocabulary rule: Keep phrases you can reuse. Delete words you only copied but cannot use in a sentence.
Aussprache und Verständlichkeit
The goal is intelligibility, not accent-free English.
Choose four to six sentences from your own speaking or writing. Mark:
- thought groups
- stressed content words
- places where words link naturally
Read the sentences aloud twice. A recording is optional and private. You may instead practise with a partner or teacher.
Self-check: Could a listener follow the message without asking you to repeat the key point?
Speaking

Use evidence, not volume.
Micro-discussion: “Which learning strategy gives the best return for a Grade 10 learner?”
Prepare one claim, two pieces of evidence, one possible counterpoint and one question for another speaker.
Useful language:
- “One source suggests that ...”
- “The evidence for this is ...”
- “A limitation of that point is ...”
- “I agree partly because ...”
- “Could you explain what you mean by ...?”
Perspective rule: Compare arguments, not nationalities or cultural stereotypes.
Writing

Write for a real purpose and audience, but use fictional personal data in application-style tasks.
Writing cycle: plan → draft → check meaning → get feedback → revise → proofread → submit.
For a comment, email, report or fictional application:
- make the purpose clear early
- organise ideas into logical paragraphs
- connect evidence to your claim
- use precise but normal vocabulary
- keep a consistent register
- revise ideas before correcting tiny surface errors
Funktionale Grammatik
Grammar is a tool for meaning.
| Communication need | Useful language tool |
|---|---|
| contrast two ideas | however, although, whereas |
| show reason or result | because, therefore, so |
| discuss possibility | may, might, could |
| give advice | should, could |
| describe a condition | if-clause |
| connect information | relative clause |
| keep time relationships clear | appropriate tense choice |
Editing question: Does the grammar make the relationship between ideas clearer? If not, simplify.
Mediation
Mediation is not full translation. Select what the other person needs.
Scenario: Your school provides a short German information text about a fictional course, event or training opportunity. An English-speaking exchange student asks what matters for them.
Write or say a short English message that:
- selects relevant information
- explains one culture-specific term if needed
- matches the addressee and purpose
- leaves out irrelevant detail
- keeps the meaning accurate
Check: What does this person need to do next? Your mediation should make that clear.
Medienanalyse und Quellenkritik

For every important online claim, ask:
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| source | Who published this and with what expertise? |
| date | Is the information current enough for the task? |
| evidence | What supports the claim? |
| perspective | What is selected, framed or left out? |
| cross-check | Can another reliable source confirm the key point? |
| rights | May I reuse the text, image or media? |
Media analysis: In a video, also check camera, editing, sound, captions, images and sequencing. Explain how these choices affect the message.
AI check: Apply the same checks to AI-generated statements. Verify factual claims with reliable sources before using them.
Feedback → Revision

Useful feedback is specific and leads to action.
Feedback pattern
- Evidence: “Your main claim is clear in paragraph 1.”
- Effect: “The second example does not yet show why the claim is true.”
- Next step: “Add one sentence that links the example to your argument.”
Revision rule: Do not just correct what is underlined. Decide which change most improves meaning, organisation or accuracy.
Fehleranalyse
Keep a small error log. Choose recurring patterns, not every single mistake.
| Evidence | Repeated pattern | Effect on communication | Fix | New check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| writing | unclear paragraph link | reader loses the argument | add or revise connector and topic sentence | reread paragraph pair |
| speaking | key words unstressed | message sounds flat or unclear | mark stress in rehearsal | partner checks main point |
| listening | too many full sentences in notes | miss later information | use keywords and symbols | compare second set of notes |
Work on one or two high-impact patterns per sprint.
Transfer zum weiteren Bildungsweg

Use fictional profiles for application or career tasks.
| Fictional profile | Next route | Likely English need | Possible learning priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | apprenticeship in media design | client communication, instructions, short presentations | speaking plus workplace vocabulary |
| Jamie | upper-secondary education | source comparison, argumentation, longer listening | reading/media analysis plus writing |
| Robin | vocational college in business | formal email, meetings, mediation | writing plus interaction |
Transfer task: Choose one fictional profile. Build a four-week English path with two targets, practice tasks, feedback moments and evidence.
Then compare it with your own next route in general terms. You do not need to share private details.
Fiktive Bewerbung
Write a short English application email for one fictional profile. Include a clear subject, purpose, relevant strengths and a polite closing. Do not use your real address, phone number, date of birth, employer data or other personal information.
Revise the email after peer feedback.
Can-do-Review
At the end of each sprint, complete this table.
| Can-do target | Evidence | Status | What changed? | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ... | ... | secure / developing / next priority | ... | ... |
Decision rule: Keep a target only if new practice will still produce useful progress. Move on when the skill is stable enough for transfer.
Folgekurs wählen
Choose the next learning focus from evidence, not from prestige.
Possible follow-up directions:
- Upper-secondary English: deeper analysis, argumentation and extended writing
- Workplace / Business English: professional interaction, email and mediation
- Exam preparation: timed listening, reading, writing and speaking
- B2 bridge: broader independent language use when your evidence supports the step
Before moving on, add one sentence to your portfolio: “My next course should focus on ... because my evidence shows ...”
Quellen für selbstständiges Weiterlernen
Use these videos as input, not as unquestioned answers. Note one claim, one useful strategy and one point you would like to verify or test.
