ABI LF - Mediation under time pressure
ABI LF - Mediation under time pressure

Einleitung
Mini-description: Handle demanding mediation tasks under a strict time limit. Train source reading, selection, planning, writing and a final check. This aiMOOC is designed for the Leistungsfach Englisch in the Baden-Württemberg upper secondary level. English comes first; German help is the last step, not the first.
Media entry: Watch the British Council clip on skimming and scanning. While watching, note two techniques that save time and one risk of reading too quickly.
I-can goals
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can read for purpose: I identify task, audience, purpose and source relevance before I start writing.
- I can select: I distinguish essential information from interesting but irrelevant detail.
- I can mediate: I convey meaning appropriately instead of translating sentence by sentence.
- I can write under pressure: I plan a coherent target text with an appropriate register and clear links.
- I can check efficiently: I use a short final check for task fulfilment, content, cohesion and language.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Before you start, explain in English what mediation is and how it differs from literal translation. Then predict which of these usually costs you most time: reading, deciding what matters, planning, writing or checking. Keep your answer private unless you choose to share it.

Core idea: mediation is selective communication
A strong mediation text is shaped by a communication situation. You do not reproduce everything. You identify what the target reader needs, reformulate it in natural English and add short explanations only when cultural or contextual knowledge is necessary.
The video is a general introduction. For Leistungsfach level, go further: justify your selection, handle denser source material, connect information across passages and control register, precision and cultural explanation independently.
Listening and Viewing
Use short, legal, embedded skill videos rather than copyrighted film extracts from compulsory works. While viewing, practise three moves: gist first, evidence second, notes last. Your notes should contain keywords, not a transcript.
Mini-task: Rewatch one minute of the skimming/scanning video. Summarise its main advice in two English sentences. Then write one sentence on how that advice transfers to a timed mediation source.
Reading: source reading under pressure

Read in layers. First read the task. Then scan the source for sections that answer the task. Only then read those sections closely. Mark meaning units, not isolated vocabulary.
A useful question is: Would my target reader need this information to achieve the stated purpose? If the answer is no, the detail is usually not a priority.
Source-reading code
Use a simple private code on your paper: T for task-relevant, C for context that needs explanation, ? for an uncertainty to solve later, and a vertical line to group related ideas. Do not spend time colour-coding everything.
Context vocabulary and word formation

When a word blocks understanding, use this help ladder in order:
- Context: infer meaning from the sentence and surrounding argument.
- Word formation: inspect prefix, root, suffix and word family.
- Visualisation: picture the situation, process or contrast.
- English explanation: paraphrase the idea with words you already know.
- Dictionary: check only if the word matters for the task.
- German help: use it last, when the previous steps are insufficient.
This order supports the English-first principle and prevents a mediation task from turning into word-by-word translation.
Analysis: task, audience, purpose, source
Use the four-part briefing TAPS: Task – Audience – Purpose – Source.
| Focus | Question |
|---|---|
| Task | What exactly must the target text do? |
| Audience | What does the reader already know, and what needs explanation? |
| Purpose | Inform, explain, advise, compare, recommend or respond? |
| Source | Which source ideas are essential, and which can be omitted? |
Micro-source: fictional practice material
Target situation: Your British exchange partner is preparing a short school presentation about student mobility. Write an email explaining the most useful points from the German source extract below. Do not translate line by line.
Fictitious source extract for practice: An einer erfundenen Schule nehmen 62 Prozent der Kursstufe an mindestens einem freiwilligen Austauschformat teil. Die häufigsten Gründe sind Sprachpraxis, Selbstständigkeit und neue Perspektiven. Einige Lernende nennen Kosten und Terminüberschneidungen als Hürden. Die Schule testet deshalb ein fiktives Zuschussmodell und kürzere Austauschphasen.
Selection challenge: Decide which ideas are necessary for the British partner and which German school-specific wording needs explanation rather than direct transfer.
Speaking: explain your choices

Explain your selection to a partner in English: I included ... because ... / I left out ... because ... / I explained ... because the reader might not know ...
This speaking step trains reasoning about mediation. It is not the same as the Baden-Württemberg Kommunikationsprüfung, which assesses oral performance in a separate exam component.
Planning

A plan should be shorter than the text it controls. Use a target-text skeleton, not a second draft:
- Opening: situation and purpose.
- Body 1: first relevant idea cluster.
- Body 2: second relevant idea cluster and necessary context.
- Closing: only if the target genre requires it.
Transfer the video's planning principle to mediation: organise by the target reader's needs, not by the source text's paragraph order.
Writing

Write naturally in English. Prefer precise paraphrase over source-language syntax. Use cohesive devices only where they clarify relationships. If the source gives a culture-specific concept, explain it briefly instead of forcing a misleading one-word equivalent.
Useful moves: According to the source, ... can be useful when source attribution matters. In other words, ... can clarify. This matters because ... can connect information to the target reader's purpose. Avoid formulaic phrases that add no meaning.
60-minute training model
The current Baden-Württemberg 2027 course requirements state that one course assessment, or part of one, checks mediation competence in isolated form, generally with 60 minutes for foreign-language text production. The following split is a training model, not an official sub-timing: 6 minutes source/task reading, 10 minutes selection, 8 minutes planning, 30 minutes writing, 6 minutes final check.
| Phase | Training focus | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Source reading | Task, audience, purpose, gist | 6 minutes |
| Selection | Relevant evidence and cultural context | 10 minutes |
| Planning | Target-text structure and register | 8 minutes |
| Writing | Clear, selective mediation | 30 minutes |
| Final check | Task, content, cohesion, language | 6 minutes |
Final check

Use a fixed sequence. First check the task, then content, then communication, then language. Do not start by hunting commas while a key source idea is still missing.
30-second questions: Have I answered the exact task? Is every paragraph useful to the target reader? Have I explained unfamiliar context? Have I accidentally translated source syntax? Are names, figures and comparisons accurate?
Hilfen und Differenzierung
Support: Work with a shorter source, a partially filled TAPS table, a model paragraph frame or a reduced vocabulary set.
Standard: Work with a full source extract, independent selection and a clear target genre.
Challenge / Leistungsfach+: Combine two short source materials, resolve overlap or tension between them, justify omissions, and write with a more differentiated register and evidence-based synthesis. Increase text complexity before increasing sheer length.
German support remains the final fallback. Context, word formation, visualisation, English explanation and dictionary work come first.
Feedback
Use two feedback passes. Pass 1 is about meaning and communication: task fulfilment, relevance, accuracy, audience and organisation. Pass 2 is about language: clarity, register, vocabulary, grammar and cohesion.
A useful peer comment has three parts: evidence – effect – next move. Example: “You included the cost barrier, which is relevant to the reader. Add one short explanation of the support model so the implication becomes clearer.”
Fehleranalyse
| Error pattern | Why it hurts | Repair move |
|---|---|---|
| Line-by-line translation | Source syntax controls the English text | Close the source briefly and paraphrase from notes |
| Over-selection | The target text becomes long and unfocused | Re-check audience and purpose |
| Under-selection | A key source point is missing | Compare each task demand with your notes |
| False precision | A number, name or causal link is distorted | Verify source evidence before finalising |
| Register drift | Tone does not fit the target situation | Re-read opening and closing as audience signals |
| No final check | Avoidable errors remain | Reserve the final minutes from the start |
Transfer
Take the same source and change only the audience: first write for a British exchange partner, then for an international youth organisation. Compare what you omit, explain or phrase differently. The source stays the same; the mediation changes because communication changes.
Responsible use of AI and digital tools
Your analysis and final text must remain your own work. AI output, summaries and source claims need verification. Do not use AI to produce a replacement essay or to bypass independent source selection. If a school task permits AI, document its use as required by your teacher or school.
Use fictional personal data in practice. Audio recordings are voluntary and should remain private unless everyone involved has agreed to another use. Do not upload classmates' texts, voices, images or personal data without permission, and do not trigger external AI access on their behalf.
Abi-Check Baden-Württemberg: Stand 03.10.2026
For the Abiturjahrgang 2027 in Englisch Leistungsfach, the official Facherlass states that the central written examination consists of Hörverstehen and Schreiben. The total working time is about 255 minutes including selection time: about 30 minutes for listening, followed by a 15-minute break, then 225 minutes for writing.
The 2027 assessment rules weight the final English examination as 20% listening, 55% writing and 25% Kommunikationsprüfung. The Kommunikationsprüfung is the oral part of the written Abitur examination and has its own preparation and speaking format.
The 2027 Facherlass also names On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters as the Schwerpunktthema and specifies additional USA/UK theme fields. These can provide contexts for practice, but this process-focused aiMOOC does not reproduce compulsory texts or film sequences.
Important for this course: Sprachmittlung is a required competence in the curriculum and must be assessed in the qualification phase, but it is not a separate central written subtask in the 2027 English Abitur according to the current Facherlass. Therefore this aiMOOC trains mediation as a high-level course and transfer competence under time pressure while keeping the 2027 final examination structure distinct.
In the qualification phase, tasks should cover AFB I, II and III overall, with AFB II and III more strongly emphasised than AFB I. Leistungsfach work requires greater complexity, abstraction, breadth, depth and differentiation than Basisfach work.
Current official reference points checked for this aiMOOC: Facherlass Abiturprüfung 2027 Englisch, Beurteilungs- und Korrekturrichtlinien Moderne Fremdsprachen 2027, and the Baden-Württemberg Bildungsplan Englisch for the gymnasiale Kursstufe. Before an actual exam, check the current official documents and your school's instructions again because later cohorts can change.

Offene Aufgaben
Leicht
- Mediation-Checkliste: Create a five-point personal final-check card in English and test it on a short practice text.
- Source Reading: Take a short German news paragraph and mark only information needed for one clearly defined English-speaking audience.
- Kontextwortschatz: Build a ten-word word-family map for one mediation topic and explain each word in simple English.
- Register: Rewrite the same two-sentence message for a friend and for a school organisation; explain the differences.
Standard
- Zeitmanagement: Complete the 60-minute training model and record the actual time spent in each phase; identify one bottleneck.
- Paraphrasing: Choose five source ideas and produce two different accurate English paraphrases for each without changing the meaning.
- Peer Feedback: Exchange a self-written mediation with a partner and give feedback using evidence, effect and next move.
- Audio Reflexion: Voluntarily record a private one-minute explanation of your selection decisions; delete the file after reflection if you do not want to keep it.
Schwer
- Materialverknüpfung: Combine two short source extracts with partly overlapping information and create one coherent target text without repetition.
- AFB III Transfer: Change audience and purpose after finishing a mediation, then justify which content and register choices must change.
- Fehleranalyse: Build an anonymised error corpus from your own previous texts and classify errors by selection, accuracy, cohesion, register and language.
- Prüfungssimulation: Design and complete a demanding 60-minute mediation task with fictional data, then write a reflective commentary on your strategy and revisions.

Lernkontrolle
- Relevanz begründen: Given a source and target situation, justify three inclusions and two omissions. Focus on audience and purpose, not on personal preference.
- Mediation umstrukturieren: Reorganise a source whose most important point appears at the end into a target text whose structure suits the reader better.
- Kulturellen Kontext erklären: Identify one culture-specific reference in a source and write the shortest English explanation that makes it understandable without overexplaining.
- Fehlerdiagnose: Compare two mediated versions of the same idea and explain which one preserves meaning more accurately and why.
- Zeitstrategie übertragen: Adapt the 60-minute training model to a shorter 35-minute classroom task and justify your new time allocation.
- Prüfungsformate unterscheiden: Explain how mediation training, the 2027 central written English exam and the Kommunikationsprüfung develop overlapping but different competences.
Lernnachweis
For a successful learning record, demonstrate:
- Independent source reading: task, audience, purpose and relevance are identified accurately.
- Selection: essential information is prioritised and omissions are defensible.
- Mediation quality: meaning is conveyed accurately without line-by-line translation.
- Target-text control: structure, cohesion and register fit the communication situation.
- Language: vocabulary and grammar are sufficiently precise for Leistungsfach level.
- Time management: planning and final checking are visible rather than sacrificed.
- Reflection: feedback and errors lead to concrete strategy changes.
- Source and AI literacy: claims are checked, sources are named where required, and AI does not replace independent writing.
