Try English first.
Sentence: “The bag is light, so I can carry it.”
What does light probably mean here?
Hint: Think about the bag. Is the sentence about colour, brightness or weight?

Notice: What is inside a dictionary entry?
A useful learner’s dictionary often gives several kinds of information. You do not need every detail every time.

Understand: Context comes first
A word can have more than one meaning. Your sentence helps you choose.
Sentence A: “Please turn on the light.”
Sentence B: “My school bag is light today.”
The spelling is the same, but the meanings are different.
Try English first: Explain the difference in one short sentence.
Hint: Sentence A is about seeing. Sentence B is about weight.

Example: “The room has a bright light.” / “The jacket is light.”
Solution: A dictionary entry may list several meanings. Choose the one that matches the context.
The four-check routine
Use this short routine when you look up a word:
- Meaning: Which meaning fits my sentence?
- Word class: What job does the word have here?
- Pronunciation: Can I listen and repeat?
- Example: Does the example work like my sentence?
Do not copy a complete dictionary example as your own work. Read it, understand the pattern and make a new sentence.

This is a fictional practice entry for learning.

Hint: Look at “learns new words very quickly”.

Solution: The second meaning fits: clever and quick to learn.
Pronunciation: Listen, notice, repeat
You do not need to sound exactly like one speaker. The goal is to be understandable.
- Listen once.
- Listen again and notice the stressed part.
- Repeat quietly or aloud.
- Use the word in a short sentence.
Some dictionaries show pronunciation symbols such as IPA. In this course, you only need to know: symbols can help, but audio and careful listening are useful too.
Private practice: Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher gives a clear task and you agree to share them.
Speaking: Ask for the right meaning
Work with a partner.
A: “What does light mean in this sentence?”
B: “I think it means not heavy because the sentence is about carrying a bag.”
Now choose another word with more than one meaning, for example watch, kind, right or park. Make a short dialogue.

Reading: Dictionary detective
Read this short text.
“Sam waited by the bank. He watched two ducks on the river. Then his sister arrived with the picnic bag.”
What does bank mean here?
Hint: Which words around it are important?

Example: “We sat on the bank and looked at the water.”
Solution: Here, bank means the land beside a river, not a place for money.
Short writing: Use the word yourself
Choose one word you looked up today.
Write three connected sentences. Use the word naturally in one sentence.

- Is the word class right?
- Did you check pronunciation?
- Did you make your own example?

Sprachmittlung: Help without translating everything
Your English-speaking partner asks what the German note “Bitte Wörterbuch benutzen und Bedeutung im Satz prüfen” means.
Do not translate word for word. Give the useful message in simple English.
Hint: What should the learner do?

Feedback: Check before you accept
A dictionary, translation tool or AI suggestion can be wrong for your context.
Use the CHECK rule:
- C = Context: Does it fit the sentence?
- H = Headword: Is it the correct form?
- E = Example: Is there a similar use?
- C = Class: Is the word class right?
- K = Keep your own final sentence.
If you use AI, check the result with a reliable dictionary and write the final sentence yourself. Do not upload names, voices, photos or private information for this task.
