E10 M - Written mediation for a specific addressee
E10 M - Written mediation for a specific addressee

Media start: Watch the first part of the video. Decide: Which expressions sound suitable for a friend, and which for a more formal addressee? Give one reason in English.
I-can-Ziele
- Mediation: I can select information that my addressee really needs.
- Addressee: I can adapt tone, detail and explanation to a specific reader.
- Own words: I can express the source message in simple, natural English instead of translating line by line.
- Writing: I can organise a short message with useful linking words.
- Revision: I can check purpose, relevance, clarity and register and improve my own text.
Vorwissen
Check yourself quickly. Can you already explain the difference between translation and mediation? Can you write an informal email? Can you explain a German term in simple English if there is no useful one-word equivalent? If not, use the help boxes in this course.
English first
Listening / Viewing

Watch the video again for about two minutes. Then answer in English:
- Which language choice can make an email too informal?
- Why does the reader matter?
- Name one change that can make a message more suitable for a formal situation.
You do not need to understand every word. Listen for purpose, audience and useful examples.

Task
Your English-speaking exchange partner Riley is 16, is interested in a media-related apprenticeship, can only arrive at about 18:00 and is worried about registration and formal clothes. Write Riley a short English message. Give only the information Riley needs, say whether the event can still be useful, mention what Riley may bring, and explain Ausbildungsplatz briefly if you use the term. Do not translate the whole source text.
Target: about 90–120 words.
Kontextwortschatz

| Source idea | Useful English | Use it when ... |
|---|---|---|
| teilnehmen | take part / attend | you describe the event |
| Anmeldung | registration | the reader asks if they must sign up |
| Lebenslauf | CV | a short British-English label is enough |
| Ausbildungsplatz | apprenticeship place / training position | you may need a short explanation |
| erforderlich | required / necessary | you explain rules |
| mitbringen | bring | you give practical advice |
Strategy: Learn chunks, not isolated words: You don’t need to register. – You can bring ... – The event is still worth attending because ...
Aussprache
Say these chunks at a natural pace: You don’t need to register. / You can bring a printed CV. / The second workshop starts at half past six. Focus on clear word stress and understandable rhythm. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit. A private voice recording is optional; do not upload it unless your school explicitly asks you to use an approved platform.
Understand
Purpose and addressee first
Before you mediate, answer three questions:
- Who? Riley, a 16-year-old exchange partner.
- Why? Riley wants to decide whether attending is useful and what to do.
- What? Only information that helps Riley make that decision.
A useful mediation is not the longest text. It is the text that helps the reader act.
Respond
Fast planning
Copy this mini-plan and complete it in English:
| Need | Your note |
|---|---|
| Event and time | ... |
| Can Riley still join? | ... |
| Registration | ... |
| Clothes | ... |
| What to bring | ... |
| One term to explain | ... |
Ignore details that do not help Riley. For example, the bus stop or kiosk may be less important unless your message purpose makes them useful.
Analyse
Select, paraphrase, explain

Use the R-A-P check:
- Relevant? Does Riley need this information?
- Addressee-friendly? Is the wording suitable for Riley?
- Paraphrased? Is the idea expressed naturally rather than copied word for word?
Example: Source idea: „Eine Anmeldung ist nicht nötig.“ Useful mediation: You don’t need to register in advance.
For culture-bound terms, explain the function rather than forcing a one-word translation. Example: an Ausbildungsplatz is a training position where a young person learns a job in a structured vocational pathway. Keep explanations short and factual; avoid culture clichés.
Communicate
Writing

A clear message can follow this shape:
Opening → key information → practical advice → short ending
Model – one possible solution
Hi Riley, the careers evening could still be useful for you even if you arrive at 6 pm. It runs until 8 pm, and there is another short workshop at 6:30. You do not need to register, and you can wear normal everyday clothes. About 25 companies will present different apprenticeship options, so you may also find something connected with media. If you want feedback, bring a printed CV for a quick check. An apprenticeship place is a training position where you learn a job while following a vocational training programme. Hope that helps you decide!
This model selects and explains; it does not translate every source sentence.
Functional grammar for mediation
| Function | Useful pattern |
|---|---|
| Report information | The notice says that ... / The event runs from ... to ... |
| Give practical advice | You can ... / You may want to ... |
| Explain no obligation | You don’t need to ... / You don’t have to ... |
| Link reason and result | because / so / that means ... |
| Add contrast | but / however |
| Explain a term | It means ... / It is a type of ... |
Use reported information only when it helps the reader. Do not turn the task into a grammar exercise.
Speaking mini-transfer

Explain your plan to a partner in 45–60 seconds before writing. Your partner asks one spontaneous question such as “Do I need to register?” or “Is there still a workshop after six?” Respond briefly and naturally.
Listen for linking words you can reuse when speaking or writing. Choose only two or three that sound natural to you.
Feedback
Four-point feedback

| Check | Yes | Revise |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | My text helps Riley decide and act. | I added facts without a clear reason. |
| Relevance | I selected what Riley needs. | I translated almost everything. |
| Language | I used clear B1-level English and my own words. | I copied German structures too closely. |
| Register | The message sounds suitable for a teenage exchange partner. | It sounds too formal, too casual or unclear. |
Peer feedback should name one strength and one next step. Keep the writer’s own text visible; revision should improve it, not replace it.
AI and source rule: If an AI tool is allowed in your learning setting, check every claim and source. Keep your own draft and compare changes. Do not send personal data, private recordings, real applications or real profiles to external AI services without explicit school approval.
Fehleranalyse
Improve these sentences:
- Weak: “The registration is not necessary.” → Better: “You don’t need to register.”
- Weak: “There are snacks.” → Ask first: Does Riley need this information for the purpose?
- Weak: “Ausbildungsplatz means apprenticeship place.” → If the term could still be unclear, explain the function briefly.
The best correction is not always the most advanced sentence. It is the clearest useful sentence for the reader.
Revise
Revision loop
- Read only the task again.
- Underline each sentence in your draft that answers the task.
- Cut or shorten sentences that do not help the addressee.
- Check verbs, pronouns, linking words and register.
- Read the final text once for meaning, not just grammar.
Transfer
New situation
Fictional source note – German
Für den Besuch im Technikmuseum sollen Jugendliche spätestens um 10:15 Uhr am Eingang sein. Große Taschen müssen in ein Schließfach. Die Führung beginnt um 10:30 Uhr und dauert 45 Minuten. Fotografieren ist in der Dauerausstellung erlaubt, aber ohne Blitz. Die Cafeteria öffnet erst um 12 Uhr.
New addressee: Your English-speaking host cousin Morgan wants to know when to arrive, what to do with a backpack and whether photos are allowed. Write 70–90 words. Leave out details Morgan did not ask for unless they are clearly useful.

Lückentext
Offene Aufgaben
Leicht
