E10 E - My English 10 transition profile

Mini-description: Create your personal English 10 transition profile. Show what you can already do in listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, intercultural competence, media literacy and AI literacy. Use evidence and set concrete next learning goals.

Target group: Klasse 10, E-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg; Englisch als erste Fremdsprache.

Learning route: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Media kick-off: Watch a short section of the Cambridge English speaking sample. Note two things that make communication clear. Do not copy the speakers; use the clip as evidence for your own criteria.

Einleitung

This aiMOOC is a compact transition check. It is not a test of a “perfect accent” and it is not a full translation course. Your goal is to describe your current English honestly, support your judgement with examples and plan your next steps.

Only sample profiles and applications are fictional. Your own learning profile is a private self-assessment, not an application. Audio/video recording is optional and should stay private unless you explicitly choose otherwise. Do not upload personal material to external tools. AI is optional: check claims and sources, keep your own voice and revise every suggestion yourself.

I-can goals

Area I can...
Listening / Viewing understand main ideas, relevant details and speaker attitude in age-appropriate authentic media.
Reading identify argument, evidence, perspective and key details in different texts.
Speaking explain and justify ideas clearly, react to others and repair misunderstandings.
Writing write coherent, precise texts and improve them after feedback.
Mediation pass on relevant information for a clear purpose and audience instead of translating everything.
Vocabulary choose topic-specific words and useful collocations in context.
Grammar use grammar to make time, condition, comparison and relationships clear.
Pronunciation speak intelligibly with useful stress, rhythm and intonation.
Intercultural competence compare perspectives without stereotypes and adapt communication respectfully.
Media literacy analyse source, purpose, evidence, framing and reliability.
AI literacy question AI output, verify sources and keep authorship transparent.

Vorwissen: 3-minute snapshot

Complete three English sentences without a dictionary:

  1. I communicate best when...
  2. One English task I can now do more independently is...
  3. My next useful challenge is...

Keep these sentences. You will revise them at the end.

English first: skill stations

Listening and viewing

Choose one six-minute section. First listen without subtitles. Then listen again with support if needed.

  1. Note the main idea in one sentence.
  2. Record three useful details.
  3. Identify one word or phrase you understood from context.
  4. Decide which claim needs a source check.

Self-check: Did you understand enough to respond, or did you only collect isolated words?

Reading

Fictional transition profile – Alex, 16

Alex can follow news explainers and school texts when the topic is familiar. In longer articles, Alex sometimes notices facts but misses the writer’s assumptions. In discussions, Alex gives clear opinions but wants to use evidence more precisely. Written work is usually well organised; the next step is to revise word choice and sentence links more independently. Alex uses online tools for vocabulary and sometimes uses AI for brainstorming, but checks important information against reliable sources. The next goal is to compare two sources before writing a judgement.

Reading task: What are Alex’s two strongest areas? Which next goal is supported by the clearest evidence? Find one sentence that shows media or AI literacy.

Context vocabulary

Word / phrase Use it for...
evidence support a judgement
reliable source evaluate information
perspective compare viewpoints
clarify repair communication
revise improve a draft
register adapt language to situation
bias question framing
next step formulate a concrete goal

Micro-task: Write two sentences about your learning. Use one noun phrase and one verb from the table.

Pronunciation: intelligibility first

Listen for word stress. Then read one of your own sentences aloud. Mark the stressed content words and pause at meaningful thought groups.

Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need to imitate one “perfect” accent.

Speaking

Prepare a 60–90 second transition statement:

  1. What can you do well?
  2. What evidence supports this?
  3. What is one realistic next goal?
  4. Which strategy will help?

Use phrases such as My evidence is..., A challenge I still notice is... and My next step will be...

Recording is voluntary. If you record, keep the file private unless you explicitly decide to share it.

Writing

Write a personal transition profile of about 180–230 words. Use your own learning history; do not invent achievements. A fictional application may be used only for practice.

Suggested structure: current strengths → evidence → one challenge → concrete goal → strategy → how you will check progress.

Revision pass: Check coherence, paragraph links, precise verbs, unnecessary repetition and whether every major claim has evidence.

Mediation

Situation: A fictional English-speaking exchange student has missed a German school announcement about a project day. Your task is to explain only the information the student needs: purpose, time, meeting point, materials and one rule.

Do not translate sentence by sentence. Select, reorganise and explain for the audience. If a culture-specific term matters, paraphrase it briefly.

Functional grammar

Use grammar as a communication tool:

  1. Present perfect for development up to now: I have become more confident in discussions.
  2. Simple past for a specific example: Last month, I presented a short review.
  3. Future forms for the next step: I am going to compare two sources each week.
  4. Conditionals for strategy: If I lose the thread, I will ask for clarification.

Error analysis: Circle one grammar choice in your draft. Explain what meaning it creates. Change it only if another form communicates your meaning better.

Intercultural competence

Compare perspectives, not “cultures as boxes”. Ask:

  1. Who is speaking?
  2. What context shapes the statement?
  3. Which evidence is given?
  4. What alternative perspective is missing?
  5. How can you disagree respectfully?

Avoid claims such as “British people always...” or “Americans are...”. Use specific contexts and sources.

Media literacy

For one online claim, check source → purpose → evidence → date → other sources. Distinguish scepticism from automatic distrust. Your aim is a reasoned judgement.

AI literacy

AI can suggest ideas, wording or questions, but it can also invent information or hide weak sourcing.

Use this four-part check:

  1. Need: Why am I using AI at all?
  2. Verify: Which claims or sources must I check?
  3. Own voice: Which wording and decisions are mine?
  4. Declare: If required, how will I state the AI support?

Do not send private recordings, personal profiles or identifying data to external AI services. Keep your original text and compare it with any revised version.

Feedback, revise, transfer

Peer or self-feedback

Use four questions:

  1. Is the message clear for the audience?
  2. Is each important self-assessment supported by evidence?
  3. Is the language precise enough for the purpose?
  4. Is the next goal concrete and checkable?

Feedback should name one strength and one next action. Then revise at least one passage.

Can-do check

Rate each area with secure / developing / next focus: listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, intercultural competence, media literacy and AI literacy.

Then complete: My strongest evidence is... My priority for the next eight weeks is... I will know I improved when...

Folgekurs

Your profile should help you move into further learning: upper secondary school, vocational education, a course, an exchange project or independent English use. Transfer your best strategy to a new task with a new topic and a new source.
