ABI LF - Mediation quality audit

Mini-description: Audit a mediation systematically for task fulfilment, selection, addressee, cultural explanation, cohesion, register and idiomatic English. This aiMOOC is designed for Leistungsfach Englisch, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg. English comes first; German support is used only when context, word formation, visualisation, English explanation and dictionary work do not solve the problem.

Media kick-off: Watch the TED-Ed video once without notes. Then answer one question: What does a mediator do that a word-for-word translator does not? On a second viewing, collect three strategies that reduce misunderstanding.

Einleitung

A strong mediation is not a full translation. It selects what matters for a concrete purpose, reshapes information for a particular reader or listener, explains culture-bound points when needed and produces natural English.

In this course, you will use a practical seven-lens audit. It is a training tool, not an official Abitur point grid. You will diagnose weaknesses, revise short texts and justify your decisions.

Course principle: source → purpose → selection → reframing → cultural explanation → target text → audit.

I-can goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can check task fulfilment: I can identify purpose, text type, addressee and required content.
  2. I can select: I can keep relevant information and omit detail that does not serve the task.
  3. I can adapt to an addressee: I can judge what the target reader knows, needs and expects.
  4. I can explain culture: I can explain culture-bound concepts briefly and accurately.
  5. I can improve cohesion: I can organise ideas logically and connect them clearly.
  6. I can control register: I can match tone and formality to situation and genre.
  7. I can write idiomatic English: I can avoid German sentence patterns and use natural English phrasing.
  8. I can revise: I can turn an audit into focused revision instead of rewriting everything.

Prior knowledge check

Before starting, answer in English:

  1. What is the difference between translation and mediation?
  2. What information can be safely omitted in a mediation?
  3. When does a German term need cultural explanation?
  4. Which is more useful in a quality audit: counting mistakes or diagnosing why the text misses its purpose?

If you cannot answer yet, continue. The course builds these ideas step by step.

The seven-lens quality audit

Lens Core question Typical red flag Repair move
Task fulfilment Does the text do exactly what the task asks? Wrong purpose, genre or missing required point Re-read task; underline purpose, addressee, product and required content
Selection Is every included detail useful for this task? Sentence-by-sentence transfer Keep essentials; omit repetition, examples or background with no target value
Addressee Is the text shaped for this reader or listener? Assumes knowledge the addressee does not have Add only the background the addressee needs
Cultural explanation Are culture-bound terms understandable? German term copied without explanation Use a short functional explanation instead of a long cultural lecture
Cohesion Does the target text flow logically? Information follows source order although target purpose differs Regroup ideas and use clear reference and linking
Register Does tone fit situation and text type? Too casual, too bureaucratic or mixed tone Choose a stable level of formality and suitable genre conventions
Idiomatic English Does the text sound natural in English? Germanisms and literal collocations Paraphrase meaning; prefer common English collocations and sentence patterns

Key distinction: correctness matters, but mediation quality is not a grammar-only issue. A grammatically clean text can still fail through poor selection, weak addressee orientation or missing cultural explanation.

Visual model: meaning under pressure

Use the model as a metaphor. The source contains a message; the mediator chooses what the target addressee needs. Noise can be linguistic, cultural or task-related. Your audit looks for where meaning was distorted, overloaded or left unexplained.

English-first help ladder

When you get stuck, use this order before asking for German help:

  1. Context: infer meaning from the sentence and situation.
  2. Word formation: inspect roots, prefixes, suffixes and related words.
  3. Visualisation: sketch the relation, process or contrast.
  4. English explanation: paraphrase with a synonym, example or definition.
  5. Dictionary: check a reliable monolingual dictionary first; then use a bilingual dictionary if needed.
  6. German support: use short German clarification only after the English-first steps have failed.

Exam habit: Do not search for a one-to-one equivalent too early. First ask: What does this mean here, and what does my addressee need?

Listening / Viewing

Viewing route:

  1. First viewing: note the speaker's central claim about language and cultural exchange.
  2. Second viewing: identify two examples where cultural knowledge changes understanding.
  3. Transfer: explain how those examples connect to addressee and cultural explanation in school mediation.
  4. LF extension: challenge one claim. What would need evidence before you used it in an analytical argument?

Recordings are optional. If you rehearse orally, keep recordings private or local unless you have explicit consent to share them.

Reading lab: fictional source

Scenario: Your English-speaking exchange group will attend the fictional Lindenheim City Festival. The organisers sent a German information note. Write for students from Bristol who have never used a German deposit system.

Fictional source text — all names and data are invented for practice:

Task: Write a 170–200 word information post for the exchange group's online noticeboard. Explain what students need to know about the cup system and why it is used. Use a clear neutral-informal register. Do not translate every detail.

Reading decisions before writing

Use a two-column note sheet:

Keep Omit unless task makes it relevant
3-euro deposit exact time of mayor's speech
return stations and refund ceremonial programme
purpose: reducing single-use waste wording that adds no practical value
warning not to throw the cup away source-text order
useful water information if space allows repeated administrative phrasing

LF question: Can two strong mediations make different selection choices? Yes. The choice is defensible if it serves task, purpose and addressee.

Context vocabulary and word formation

Word family English explanation Useful mediation phrase
mediate → mediation → mediator make meaning accessible between languages or contexts The source explains …; for the target reader, this means …
select → selection → selective choose what is relevant The key point for visitors is …
relevant → relevance → irrelevant connected to the task and useful for the addressee This detail can be omitted because …
address → addressee the intended reader or listener For an international audience, it helps to explain …
cohere → cohesion → cohesive ideas connect into a clear whole A clearer order would be …
register → formal / neutral / informal level and style suited to situation A neutral-informal phrase would be …
idiom → idiomatic → idiomatically natural usage typical of the target language A more idiomatic version is …

Analysis lab

Read this deliberately weak draft:

At the festival every guest must give three euros Pfand. The city administration executes a multi-use cup concept because of climate protection. You must reverse your cup at a back-giving station and then you become the money again. Also, the mayor makes the opening speech at 10:15. Dear foreign pupils, do not forget this!

Audit it with the seven lenses.

Lens Diagnosis Revision direction
Task fulfilment Basic topic is present, but the practical explanation is incomplete and the purpose is blurred. State clearly how deposit and refund work.
Selection Mayor's speech is irrelevant to the assigned purpose. Omit it.
Addressee Pfand is unexplained. Explain it as a refundable deposit.
Cultural explanation The system is named but not made transparent. Explain the function briefly.
Cohesion Ideas jump from system to mayor to warning. Group mechanism, purpose and advice.
Register Dear foreign pupils is awkward and inappropriate for the noticeboard. Use direct, neutral-informal address.
Idiomatic English executes a concept, reverse your cup, become the money are literal Germanisms. Rephrase meaning in natural English.

AFB II/III move: Do not only correct. Explain which flaw has the greatest effect on communicative success and why.

Speaking

One-minute audit briefing: Choose one lens and explain a revision decision without reading a script.

Useful stems:

Function Stem
justify selection I would keep / omit this because the addressee needs …
explain culture The term may be unfamiliar, so I would describe it as …
discuss register This phrase is too formal / informal for …
challenge a choice That is possible, but the task places more emphasis on …
compare versions Version B is more effective in this respect because …

Tandem practice: Partner A defends the draft. Partner B challenges two choices using task, addressee and evidence. Switch roles.

Writing / Mediation

Write your 170–200 word information post from the fictional source. Then perform two revision passes.

Pass 1 — meaning: task fulfilment, selection, addressee, cultural explanation.

Pass 2 — target English: cohesion, register, idiomatic English.

Do not aim to preserve German syntax. Aim to preserve relevant meaning and communicative function.

Micro-models, not a model essay

These are phrase-level examples, not a full replacement text:

Problem Better move
Pfand a €3 refundable deposit
Mehrwegbecher a reusable cup
Pfand zurückbekommen get your deposit back
Einwegmüll vermeiden reduce single-use waste
bureaucratic source style concise reader-focused explanation

Do the full mediation yourself. A model answer is deliberately not provided.

Feedback

Use feedback codes that diagnose the type of problem:

Code Lens Question
T Task fulfilment Does this fulfil the task?
S Selection Is this detail needed?
A Addressee Will the target reader understand why this matters?
Cx Cultural explanation Does a culture-bound concept need a short explanation?
Co Cohesion Is the order clear and connected?
R Register Does the tone fit?
I Idiomatic English Would a proficient speaker normally phrase it this way?

Feedback rule: mark the cause, not every surface symptom. The writer should perform the revision.

Feedback loop

Use a simple loop: draft → audit → one priority → revise → re-read as addressee. Do not change ten things at once. A focused revision makes learning visible.

Error analysis

Symptom Likely cause Repair strategy
almost every German sentence appears in English translation mindset return to task and select only relevant information
correct facts but confusing for an international reader weak addressee orientation add essential context and remove assumed knowledge
long explanation of a culture-specific term over-explanation explain function in one concise phrase
many linking words but weak logic surface cohesion without structure regroup content before adding connectors
inconsistent tone register not planned decide genre and relationship before drafting
grammatically possible but unnatural phrasing literal transfer from German paraphrase the idea and check common collocations

High-level reflection: Which error would remain invisible in a grammar checker? Usually selection, addressee and cultural explanation require human judgement.

Differentiation

Support route: work with a shortened source, highlight task words, use the seven-lens table and audit only four lenses first.

Standard LF route: audit all seven lenses, justify omissions and revise independently.

Stretch LF route: combine two short sources, resolve competing priorities, explain why you changed source order and evaluate two defensible target versions.

Pace options: 15-minute micro-audit, 30-minute revision workshop or a full timed 60-minute mediation practice.

Language support: sentence stems may help planning, but remove them from the final version if they make the text formulaic.

Abi-Check 2027 Baden-Württemberg

Stand: 3 October 2026. Always re-check the official documents for your own exam year.

For the Leistungsfach, the Baden-Württemberg curriculum explicitly requires mediation that is summarising, addressee-appropriate and interculturally appropriate. Learners select relevant information, transfer it coherently, identify culturally sensitive intentions, explain culture-specific concepts and use compensation strategies.

In the Qualifikationsphase, one written assessment or part of an assessment checks mediation competence in isolated form; the target production is in the foreign language and is usually designed for about 60 minutes.

The 2027 written Abitur examination is different: it consists of listening comprehension and writing. The published framework gives about 255 minutes including selection time: about 30 minutes for listening, a 15-minute break and 225 minutes for writing including selection time.

The Kommunikationsprüfung is the oral component. It can be an individual or tandem examination and contains monological and dialogical speaking. German-language quotations or theses may be used as impulses in the sense of mediation. This is not the same format as the isolated 60-minute mediation assessment in the Qualifikationsphase.

The published 2027 correction guidelines weight the components of the overall written Abitur result as 20% listening, 55% writing and 25% Kommunikationsprüfung.

main mode listening and writing speaking
product written responses and target texts monologue plus dialogue

key performance focus content, analysis, writing quality and language task/content, interaction/discourse and language
preparation strategy plan, select, structure, write, revise plan briefly, speak coherently, interact and respond

Transfer

Apply the seven-lens audit to one new context:

  1. Exchange welcome guide: mediate a short German school rule for visiting students.
  2. University orientation: explain a German administrative term for international first-year students.
  3. Tourism: turn a local German notice into a concise English visitor message.
  4. Sustainability event: combine two short German information cards into one English announcement.

For each task, justify at least two omissions and one cultural explanation.

Next course

Continue with ABI LF - Mediation under time pressure: planning, prioritising and revising a full mediation within a timed 60-minute training window.

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Mediation markieren: Take a short self-written mediation and label one sentence for each of four lenses: task, selection, addressee and idiomatic English.
  2. Pfand erklären: Explain the fictional festival's deposit system in two English sentences for someone who has never encountered it.
  3. Germanismen finden: Invent three literal German-to-English phrases and replace them with natural English.
  4. Register wechseln: Rewrite the same two-sentence message once for a friend and once for a formal school email.

Standard

  1. Mediation überarbeiten: Write the 170–200 word festival mediation and revise it using all seven lenses.
  2. Peer-Audit: Exchange printed or local drafts with a partner, give only coded feedback and let the writer make the corrections.
  3. Viewing transfer: Use one idea from the embedded video to explain why cultural knowledge changes mediation choices.
  4. Selection begründen: Choose five source details from a fictional notice, keep three and justify the two omissions in English.

Schwer

  1. Quellen verbinden: Create two short fictional German sources on the same event, mediate them into one English text and explain how you resolved overlap.
  2. Audit vergleichen: Produce two different but defensible target versions for different addressees and compare their selection, register and cultural explanation.
  3. Kommunikationsprüfung simulieren: Prepare a one-minute monologue from a short German impulse, then defend your mediation decisions in a partner dialogue.
  4. AFB III Reflection: Evaluate which of the seven lenses is hardest to automate reliably with AI or grammar-checking software and support your judgement with examples.

  6. KI-Prüfung: Evaluate an AI-generated mediation by checking source fidelity, task fulfilment, addressee orientation and unverifiable additions. Revise only after verification.

Lernnachweis

For a strong learning record, you should be able to:

  1. identify purpose, addressee, genre and required content before writing
  2. select and justify relevant information instead of translating everything
  3. explain culture-bound concepts briefly and accurately
  4. organise a coherent target text with appropriate register
  5. produce idiomatic English and revise Germanisms
  6. use the seven-lens audit independently
  7. distinguish written Abitur components from the Kommunikationsprüfung
  8. justify revisions using evidence from source, task and addressee
  9. verify AI-assisted suggestions and source claims instead of accepting them automatically
  10. document that recordings and personal data were handled privately and responsibly

OERs zum Thema

Note: The CEFR Companion Volume uses a broader concept of mediation than the specific school task format practised here. Use the distinction analytically.
