E10 M - Use AI for focused writing revision

QR-Code

Einleitung

Mini-description: Nutze KI nur für gezieltes Feedback zu structure, clarity, cohesion oder einem ausgewählten grammar target. Überarbeite Deinen Text danach selbst.

Your text stays your text. AI may comment on one chosen aspect. You decide what is useful, check claims and sources, and write the final version yourself.

Learning path

Step What you do
English first Read or listen before using German support.
Understand Identify purpose, audience and main message.
Respond React to the text in your own words.
Analyse Find strengths and one revision focus.
Communicate Discuss, negotiate and explain your choices.
Feedback Ask for focused feedback only.
Revise Improve the text yourself.
Transfer Apply the method to a new text type.

I can ...

  1. I can plan, draft and revise a B1-oriented text independently.
  2. I can check structure, clarity and cohesion in my own writing.
  3. I can choose one grammar target and work on it systematically.
  4. I can ask AI for focused feedback without asking it to rewrite my text.
  5. I can check AI claims and sources before I trust them.
  6. I can accept or reject feedback and explain my decision.
  7. I can discuss and present my revision choices in English.
  8. I can mediate information for a specific purpose and audience.

Vorwissen: Quick check

Answer in English. Short answers are enough.

  1. What is the difference between a draft and a final version?
  2. Name two linking words you already use confidently.
  3. Which grammar problem appears often in your writing?
  4. What makes feedback useful?
  5. When should you check a source instead of simply trusting a statement?

Media warm-up: Revision is visible

Look at the editing marks. Do not translate everything. Focus on the process.

  1. What kinds of changes can you see?
  2. Which changes may improve meaning?
  3. Which changes may only improve accuracy?
  4. Why is revision more than correcting spelling?

Listening and Viewing: How to improve your writing

First viewing – gist: What is the main advice?

Second viewing – detail: Note three actions a writer can take before submitting a text.

After viewing: Compare your notes with a partner. Agree on the two most useful actions for your own writing.

Reading: Feedback, not replacement

Read first. Do not translate sentence by sentence.

AI tools can react to a draft very quickly. That can be useful when you already know what kind of feedback you need. For example, you can ask whether your paragraphs are in a logical order, whether one sentence is unclear, or whether you use a selected grammar form consistently. However, fast feedback is not automatically correct or useful. An AI system may misunderstand your purpose, suggest language that does not sound like you, or present a claim without a reliable source. That is why you remain the writer and decision-maker.

A focused revision process has three steps. First, choose one target. Second, check the feedback against your text, the task and reliable sources. Third, revise in your own words. If you cannot explain why you changed a sentence, the change may not really be yours yet.

The goal is not a perfect machine-written text. The goal is a clearer, more coherent and more accurate text that still communicates your ideas.

Reading check:

  1. Why should you choose one feedback target?
  2. Name two reasons why AI feedback may need checking.
  3. What are the three revision steps?
  4. What is the main goal of the process?

Context vocabulary

Word Simple English meaning Example
draft a first version of a text My first draft has four paragraphs.
revise improve ideas, order or language I revise the introduction after feedback.
edit correct or polish a text I edit punctuation at the end.
structure the order and organisation of a text The structure follows introduction, main part and ending.
clarity how easy the meaning is to understand This sentence needs more clarity.
cohesion how well ideas and sentences connect Linking words can improve cohesion.
register language that fits situation and audience A formal email needs an appropriate register.
grammar target one grammar point you focus on My grammar target is tense consistency.
source where information comes from I check the original source.
verify check whether something is correct I verify the date before using the claim.

Pronunciation: Be understandable

Your goal is clear communication, not accent-free speech. Listen for stress, rhythm and sentence focus in natural standard English.

Practice these words in short sentences: revise – revision – clarity – cohesion – audience – evidence.

  1. Say each word once slowly and once in a natural sentence.
  2. Mark the stressed syllable.
  3. Read your sentence to a partner or quietly to yourself.
  4. Optional: make a private recording and compare only your own two attempts. Do not upload it.

Speaking: Discuss and negotiate feedback

Work in pairs. Student A gives one piece of feedback. Student B decides whether to accept it.

Useful language:

  1. I see your point, but ...
  2. I agree because ...
  3. I would keep this sentence because ...
  4. Could you explain what is unclear?
  5. Which part of the task does this feedback refer to?
  6. I suggest we focus on ... first.

Then switch roles. End with a 60-second spoken summary: What will I revise, and why?

Writing: Ask for focused AI feedback

Think of three roles:

Role Responsibility
Writer You create the ideas and the draft.
Feedback tool AI comments on the one aspect you selected.
Editor and decision-maker You check the feedback and revise the text yourself.

Choose only one prompt at a time.

Structure prompt: Do not rewrite my text. Check whether the paragraph order is logical and fits the task. Give me at most three questions that help me improve the structure.

Clarity prompt: Do not rewrite my text. Identify up to three places that may be unclear. Explain briefly what makes them difficult to understand.

Cohesion prompt: Do not rewrite my text. Identify up to three weak links between sentences or paragraphs. Suggest the type of linking expression I may need, but do not write a replacement paragraph.

Grammar-target prompt: Check only my use of [grammar target]. Point to up to five places I should check and explain the rule briefly. Do not rewrite the text.

Important: Use these prompts only with a teacher-approved tool and only with non-personal, non-sensitive text. You can also simulate the process with peer or teacher feedback and no AI tool at all.

Check – Decide – Revise

AI or peer comment Evidence in my text My decision My own revision Why?
Example: Paragraph 2 may come too early. It gives an example before I explain the problem. Accept. I move the explanation before the example. The logic becomes easier to follow.
Your feedback ... Accept / reject / partly accept ... ...

Never accept a change only because it sounds more advanced. Keep language you understand and can use independently.

Functional grammar: One target at a time

Choose the grammar target that improves your meaning.

Target Function Self-check
Tense consistency keeps the time frame clear Do I change tense for a reason?
Subject–verb agreement makes the sentence grammatically clear Does the verb match the subject?
Relative clauses add precise information Is the extra information connected clearly?
Modal verbs express possibility, advice or obligation Does the modal fit my intended meaning?
Linking clauses show cause, contrast, condition or result Is the logical relationship clear?

Do not ask for a full grammar correction. Select one target, find a pattern, understand the rule and correct the relevant places yourself.

Feedback and error analysis

After revising, create a small personal error log.

Pattern Example from my draft Rule or reason My correction Next target
tense shift ... ... ... ...
unclear reference ... ... ... ...

Look for repeated patterns. One useful pattern is more valuable than twenty unexplained corrections.

Critical viewing: AI literacy

Watch for the difference between what is claimed and what is supported by evidence.

  1. What claim about AI and education do you hear?
  2. What evidence or data source is mentioned?
  3. What would you verify before repeating the claim?
  4. Does the video describe correlation, causation or both? Explain carefully.

Extension: Feedback needs judgement

Use the video as a critical-viewing task, not as an instruction to trust every AI tool.

Think – pair – share: When can quick automated feedback help? When is human judgement especially important?

Source check: S-D-E

Use the short routine Source – Date – Evidence.

  1. Source: Who published the information?
  2. Date: Is it current enough for your purpose?
  3. Evidence: What supports the claim?

If an AI answer names a source, open the original source when possible. Do not cite a source you have not checked.

Mediation: Purpose before translation

Situation: An English-speaking exchange student asks how AI may be used in your writing lesson.

German information: Im Unterricht darf KI nur für klar begrenztes Feedback genutzt werden. Persönliche Daten und echte Bewerbungsunterlagen werden nicht hochgeladen. Die Lernenden prüfen Hinweise und überarbeiten ihre Texte selbst. In Prüfungen gelten die aktuellen offiziellen Hilfsmittelregeln.

Your task: Explain the relevant information in English in about 60–80 words. Adapt it to the exchange student's question. Do not translate every sentence.

Transfer: Different writing formats

Choose one text type and one feedback focus.

Text type Possible task Useful focus
Informal email Give a friend advice about a school project. clarity
Formal email Ask a fictional company for information about work experience. register
Application / CV Apply with a completely fictional profile. structure
Report Report the results of a fictional class survey. cohesion
Article Write about responsible AI use in school. structure and source reference
Opinion text Argue for rules that keep students responsible for their own writing. cohesion

For applications and CVs, use invented names, addresses, schools, dates and qualifications only.

Exam connection Baden-Württemberg – checked 2 October 2026

For the Realschulabschluss 2027, the official rules currently state:

  1. The written compulsory foreign-language examination has five parts: A listening, B text-oriented tasks, C contextual vocabulary and grammar, D topic-based language production, E application of acquired techniques and methods.
  2. Pure working time is 150 minutes plus a 20-minute break between Part A and Parts B–E.
  3. Part D includes a shorter text of about 100 words and a longer text of about 160 words within specified tolerance ranges.
  4. Part A is completed without a dictionary. For Parts B–E, a bilingual English–German / German–English dictionary is permitted under the official conditions.
  5. The communication examination lasts about 15 minutes per student and includes monologue, dialogue and mediation.
  6. Communication-capable electronic devices such as smartphones and smartwatches are not permitted in the examination.

Important: Training with AI does not mean AI is an exam aid. Before an examination, always check the latest official rules from your school and the Kultusministerium.

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Revision hunt: Mark one sentence in your own draft that could be clearer. Write two possible revisions and explain which one you prefer.
  2. Paragraph map: Give each paragraph of a short text a three-word label. Check whether the order is logical.
  3. Linking detective: Find five linking expressions in a text and explain what relationship each one shows.
  4. Feedback question: Turn a vague request such as “Improve my text” into a focused request about structure, clarity, cohesion or one grammar target.

Standard

  1. Peer revision: Exchange a short draft with a partner. Give feedback on exactly one chosen target. The writer accepts, rejects or adapts each comment with a reason.
  2. Error log: Analyse five corrections from one of your older texts. Group them into patterns and choose one future grammar target.
  3. Revision conference: Discuss two conflicting pieces of feedback with a partner and negotiate which change best fits purpose and audience.
  4. Source check: Take one factual claim from an AI-generated example supplied by your teacher and verify it using Source–Date–Evidence.

Schwer

  1. Multi-stage revision: Write a 180-word opinion text. Revise it in two rounds: first cohesion, then one grammar target. Document only the changes you chose yourself.
  2. Feedback comparison: Using a fictitious, non-personal text and only a teacher-approved tool, compare focused AI feedback with peer feedback. Identify agreements, differences and limitations.
  3. Purpose-based mediation: Turn a short German school rule about digital tools into an English explanation for an exchange student and a separate English note for a teacher. Compare your choices.
  4. Revision showcase: Present a before-and-after version of one paragraph. Explain the problem, the feedback, your decision and the effect of your revision. A recording is optional and private.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Transfer of strategy: You receive the same draft twice: once with many small corrections and once with three focused comments. Explain which feedback would help long-term learning more and under what conditions.
  2. Audience shift: Rewrite the same core information once as an informal email to a friend and once as a formal inquiry. Explain three language choices that changed.
  3. Cohesion problem: Analyse a paragraph whose sentences are grammatically correct but poorly connected. Improve the links without adding new content.
  4. Claim verification: An AI response gives a confident factual statement and names a source. Describe the steps you would take before using the statement in an article.
  5. Functional grammar: Choose one repeated grammar pattern from a sample text, explain how it affects meaning, and design a focused self-check for it.
  6. Mediation transfer: Select the information an English-speaking visitor needs from a short German notice. Explain what you leave out and why.
