E10 G - Community and belonging

Einleitung

Community and belonging is about people, support and taking part. In this aiMOOC, you learn and use useful English for community, belonging, responsibility, support and participation. You also understand short examples of social engagement and talk about simple ways people can help.

Level: English, Klasse 10, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. Learning path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

You do not need to understand every word. Use pictures, key words, context and sentence starters. German help is short and selective; there is no full translation.

Look first – no dictionary yet. What can you see? What are the people doing? Choose three words: together – help – clean – community – responsibility – support.

I can ...

After this unit, you can say:

  1. I can understand the main idea of a short text or video about community action.
  2. I can use key words such as community, belong, support, responsibility, volunteer and participate.
  3. I can ask simple follow-up questions when I do not understand.
  4. I can give a short reason with because or a result with so.
  5. I can report a simple community activity in the present or past.
  6. I can write a short structured message, report or opinion.
  7. I can improve my text after feedback.
  8. I can transfer the language to a new community situation.

Before you start: What do you already know?

Say or write short answers in English.

  1. Community: Name one group you are part of.
  2. Support: What can people do when someone needs help?
  3. Participation: Where can young people take part?
  4. Responsibility: What is one responsibility at school or at home?

Help: I am part of ... / People can ... / Young people can ... / One responsibility is ...

Media start: Community in action

A community garden is a place where people work on a garden together. You do not need to know every word to talk about the picture.

Think – pair – share:

  1. What are the people doing?
  2. How can the activity create a sense of belonging?
  3. What responsibility can each person have?

Sentence starters: They are ... / They work together because ... / One person can ...

Datei:People's Garden Volunteers (20220922-FPAC-LSC-0036).webm

Quick viewing: Watch the short clip once without stopping. Then watch it again. Name two actions you can see. No full sentences are needed after the first viewing.

Listening and Viewing

Video task: What is community service?

First viewing – understand: Watch for the main idea only. Which idea fits best: helping others, earning money or winning a competition?

Second viewing – respond: Note three activities or ideas you understand.

Third step – communicate: Compare with a partner.

Useful phrases: I heard ... / I think the main idea is ... / Can you say that again? / What does ... mean?

Listening strategy: Listen for stressed key words. Do not stop because of one unknown word.

Viewing for belonging

Watch only a short section chosen by your teacher, for example the beginning. The language is more difficult than the core course.

Your task is receptive: Find the topic and one idea connected to home or belonging. You do not have to use all of the video's vocabulary yourself.

Help: The speaker talks about ... / One idea is ... / I understood the word ...

Reading

A small project, a real difference

Read the fictional profile.

Samira, 16, Green Street Youth Group

Samira joined a small youth group in her neighbourhood. At first, she only wanted to meet new people. Then the group planned a Saturday clean-up in a local park. Samira helped to make simple posters and invited two friends. On the day, twelve young people collected litter and sorted bottles and paper. An adult volunteer brought gloves and explained the safety rules.

After the activity, Samira said she felt more connected to the area. She also learned that helping a community is not only about big projects. Small actions can matter when people work together. Next month, the group wants to support a community garden. Samira would like to help again, but she also wants the group to ask local residents what they need.

Understand:

  1. Why did Samira first join the group?
  2. What did the group do in the park?
  3. What did Samira learn?
  4. Why does she want to ask local residents?

Analyse – with help: Which idea is stronger in the text: belonging, responsibility or participation? Give one short reason.

Starter: I choose ... because ...

Context vocabulary

Use the words in context. Learn the core words first.

Word Simple English meaning Example Small help
community people connected by place, interest or activity Our school is a community. Gemeinschaft
belong feel accepted as part of a group I feel that I belong here. dazugehören
belonging the feeling of being part of a group Teamwork can create belonging. Zugehörigkeit
support help a person or group We support new students. helfen / unterstützen
responsibility something you should take care of Safety is everyone's responsibility. Verantwortung
participate take part in an activity Many students participate in the project. teilnehmen
volunteer help by choice, usually without normal pay She volunteers at a community garden. freiwillig helfen
local connected to your area We help a local project. örtlich
need something important that is missing First, ask what the community needs. Bedarf
respect treat people and ideas fairly Listen with respect. Respekt

Word choice: Complete orally: A food bank can ___ people. Volunteers ___ in the work. They have a ___ to follow safety rules.

Pronunciation

Goal: understandable English, not accent-free English.

Focus on word stress:

  1. com-MU-ni-ty
  2. be-LONG
  3. re-spon-si-BI-li-ty
  4. par-TI-ci-pate
  5. sup-PORT
  6. VOL-un-teer

Say each word slowly, then in a short phrase: local community, I belong here, take responsibility, participate in a project, support others, a young volunteer.

Private practice: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you clearly choose to share them.

Speaking

Safe short conversation

Work with a partner.

A: What makes a good community? B: I think a good community ... because ... A: Can you give an example? B: For example, ...

Then switch roles.

When you need help: Could you repeat that, please? / Do you mean ...? / I need a moment. / How do you say ... in English?

Mini presentation

Speak for about 45–60 seconds about a fictional community project.

Use this order:

  1. Problem: Our area has ...
  2. Action: We can ...
  3. People: Students / families / volunteers can ...
  4. Reason: This can help because ...
  5. Next step: First, we should ...

Do not use real private data. A recording is optional and may stay private.

Writing

A short structured email

Write 80–110 words. Use a fictional name and project.

Situation: You want to join a local clean-up day.

Structure:

Subject: Helping at the clean-up day

Hello ... ,

I am writing because ... I would like to help with ... I can ... Could you tell me ... ? Thank you for your time.

'Best wishes, Alex

Accuracy focus 1: sentence starts and full stops. Accuracy focus 2: can + base verb: I can help, not I can helps. Accuracy focus 3: one clear reason with because.

Short report

After a fictional activity, write 90–120 words.

Plan: When? – Where? – What did people do? – What went well? – What should happen next?

Useful past forms: helped, collected, talked, planned, joined, learned.

Mediation

A German school notice says:

„Am Freitag findet nach der 6. Stunde eine freiwillige Aufräumaktion auf dem Schulhof statt. Handschuhe werden gestellt. Treffpunkt ist vor der Sporthalle. Wer mitmachen möchte, meldet sich bis Mittwoch bei der Klassenleitung.“

An English-speaking exchange student asks what is important.

Do not translate every word. Give the key information in simple English.

Starter: There is a voluntary clean-up ... It is on ... You meet ... You need to ...

Functional grammar

Use grammar to communicate, not as an isolated list.

Function Useful form Example
ability / offer can + verb We can help.
suggestion could + verb We could collect litter.
advice / responsibility should + verb We should listen first.
reason because I joined because I wanted to help.
result so The park was dirty, so we organised a clean-up.
real condition if + present, can + verb If we work together, we can do more.
report a finished action past simple We collected ten bags of litter.

Step-by-step accuracy: First make the message clear. Then check one target at a time: verb after can, past ending, because sentence.

Help box

When English is difficult, use one support at a time:

  1. Look at the picture or title.
  2. Mark words you know.
  3. Guess the topic before using a dictionary.
  4. Use a sentence starter.
  5. Ask a partner to repeat or explain.
  6. Check only the key word you really need.
  7. Say less, but say it clearly.

Feedback → revise

Give feedback on two strengths and one next step.

Feedback phrases: Your main idea is clear. / I understand your example. / Add one reason. / Check the verb after can. / Use one past-tense verb here.

Then revise your own text. Keep your original version so you can see what changed.

Error analysis

Find and correct the focus error.

  1. We can helps older people. → Check the verb after can.
  2. Yesterday we collect litter. → Check the finished past action.
  3. I joined the group I wanted to meet people. → Add a connector.
  4. She participate in the project. → Check subject and verb.

Do not correct everything at once. Work on the current accuracy target.

Transfer

New situation: Your school wants one small action that improves everyday life.

Choose one: welcome new students – reduce litter – support a reading club – improve a shared space – help at a school event.

In English, say:

  1. What is the need?
  2. Who can participate?
  3. What can they do?
  4. What responsibility is important?
  5. How can the activity create belonging?
