E9 G - Answer simple follow-up questions
E9 G - Answer simple follow-up questions
Mini-Beschreibung: After a short presentation, you understand simple follow-up questions, give a short answer and ask for clarification when you are not sure. You use clear English first. Help is there when you need it.

English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again
Einleitung
You have finished a short presentation. Now someone asks a question.
Do not panic. Listen. Think. Answer. Ask if you are not sure.

Mini challenge: Look at the picture. What can happen after a presentation? Say one short sentence in English.
This aiMOOC is for English as a first foreign language, Klasse 9, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg. The focus is speaking, listening, communication and simple follow-up questions.
Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg: Sprechen – an Gesprächen teilnehmen
I can ...
- I can understand a simple question after a presentation.
- I can respond with one to three clear sentences.
- I can ask for repetition or explanation.
- I can give a reason with because.
- I can improve an answer after feedback.
- I can keep speaking even when I do not know every word.
Vorwissen
Say the phrases you already know.
| Situation | English |
|---|---|
| You did not hear the question. | Sorry, could you say that again, please? |
| You do not understand one word. | What does ... mean? |
| You need more information. | Could you explain that, please? |
| You want time to think. | Let me think for a moment. |

Media start: Listen and notice
Watch once without subtitles. Your task is not to understand every word. Find two useful clarification phrases.
First watch: What is the speaker trying to do?
Second watch: Use subtitles if you need them. Pause and repeat one useful phrase.
Third step: Say the phrase with your own example.
Understand
A short fictional presentation
Maya: “Our school wants to reduce food waste. We looked at the canteen for one week. Some unopened food was thrown away. Our idea is a sharing shelf. Students can put unopened food there. Another student can take it. We think the idea is simple and cheap.”
All names and school situations in this course are fictional.

Check the main idea
Answer in short English.
- What problem does Maya talk about?
- What is her idea?
- Why does she like the idea?
Hint: You do not need every detail. Listen or read for the main idea first.
Respond
After Maya's presentation, you may hear:
| Follow-up question | Short useful answer |
|---|---|
| Why did you choose this idea? | We chose it because it is simple. |
| How does the sharing shelf work? | Students put unopened food there. Other students can take it. |
| Do you think students will use it? | Yes, I think so because it is easy to use. |
| Can you give an example? | Yes. A student can leave an unopened apple juice for someone else. |
Good answer pattern:
Answer + reason or example
“I think it can work because it is simple.”
“Yes. For example, students can share unopened drinks.”
Ask
If you are not sure, ask. This is good communication.

| Problem | Clarification strategy |
|---|---|
| You did not hear it. | Sorry, could you say that again, please? |
| The question was too fast. | Could you say that more slowly, please? |
| One idea is unclear. | What do you mean by ...? |
| You need an example. | Could you give me an example? |
| You want to check. | Do you mean ...? |
Media task: Listen for two phrases you can really use. Pause. Repeat. Then use one phrase in a new school situation.
Hint
Use a help level only when you need it.
| Help level | Support |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Key words: reason – example – problem – idea – result |
| Level 2 | Sentence starters: I think ... / We chose ... because ... / For example, ... |
| Level 3 | Repair phrases: Sorry, could you repeat that? / What do you mean by ...? / Let me think. |
Rule: Try English first. Do not translate the whole conversation.
Improve
Functional grammar
Only a few accuracy points are important here.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ask politely | Could you + base verb ...? | Could you explain that? |
| Ask about meaning | What do you mean by ...? | What do you mean by “cheap”? |
| Ask about a past choice | Why did you + base verb ...? | Why did you choose this topic? |
| Give a reason | ... because ... | We chose it because it is useful. |
Remember: After did, use the base verb: did you choose, not did you chose.
Fehleranalyse
| Not yet | Better |
|---|---|
| What you mean? | What do you mean? |
| Why you chose this? | Why did you choose this? |
| Could you explain again? | Could you explain that again, please? |
| I don't know. | I'm not sure. Could you repeat the question? |
Communication first: A clear message is more important than a perfect accent.
Pronunciation and fluency

Speak in short chunks:
Sorry / could you say that again / please?
I think so / because / it is easy to use.
Could you give me / an example?
Use a friendly question intonation. Do not rush. A short thinking pause is okay.
Use again
Speaking loop
Work with a partner.
- Student A gives a 30–45 second mini-presentation.
- Student B asks one simple follow-up question.
- Student A answers in one to three sentences.
- Student B asks for one detail or gives a clarification question.
- Student A improves the answer.
- Change roles.
Possible topics: school lunch, a hobby, a class project, a fictional job idea, a useful app, a local activity.
No real private social-media data is needed.
Listening and viewing challenge
Watch this clarification lesson. Focus on how a speaker checks meaning.
Before watching: Choose one goal: repetition, meaning or checking.
While watching: Write only three key words.
After watching: Use one phrase in your own dialogue. Do not copy a full transcript.
Reading: Q and A after a presentation
Presenter: We want to start a bike repair afternoon at school.
Leo: Why do you think students need it?
Presenter: Some students have small bike problems. They may not know how to fix them.
Leo: What do you mean by small problems?
Presenter: For example, low tyre pressure or a loose light.
Leo: Okay. Who can help?
Presenter: A teacher and students with repair experience can help.
Reading task: Find one question for a reason, one clarification question and one question for more information.

Could you explain ...?
Keep the text short and clear. Your own first draft stays yours. If you use AI feedback, compare the suggestions with your original text before changing anything.
Mediation
Your English-speaking partner did not understand this German classroom message:
„Nach der Präsentation gibt es zwei Minuten für Rückfragen. Jede Person darf eine kurze Frage stellen.“
Give the key information in simple English. Do not translate every word.
Feedback
Use this quick check after speaking.
| Check | Yes / almost / not yet |
|---|---|
| I answered the question. | |
| I gave a reason or example. | |
| I asked for help when I was unsure. | |
| My English was understandable. | |
| I used one useful phrase again. |
Peer feedback: Say one thing that was clear and one next step.
Example: “Your reason was clear. Next time, add an example.”
Safe media and AI use
- Use fictional names and fictional application or profile data in practice tasks.
- Do not share private social-media data.
- Audio or video recording is voluntary and should stay private unless everyone involved agrees to another use.
- Do not upload recordings or personal data to external AI tools without permission.
- Check AI facts, sources and feedback. Keep your own text and decide which changes you accept.
- Use media to learn, not only to decorate a page.
Transfer
New situation: You present a fictional weekend job idea.
Presentation: “I would like to work in a small sports shop. I like helping people, and I know a lot about bikes.”
Possible follow-up questions:
- Why do you want to work there?
- What can you do well?
- Can you give an example?
- What do you mean by “helping people”?
- What would you like to learn?
Answer with the pattern:
short answer + reason/example
