E10 G - Understand a volunteer position

Look first. What are the people doing? Say or write three English words. You do not need full sentences yet.

Compare. What is similar? What is different? Where could volunteers help?

Mini description: In this aiMOOC, you read a fictional volunteer advertisement. You find information about place, tasks, time, skills and support. Then you decide who the position could fit and give simple reasons.

Learning path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Level: English as a first foreign language, Klasse 10, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau. The language is clear and supported. You do not need to translate every sentence.

I can ...

After this course, you can say:

  1. I can find place, tasks, time, skills and support in a volunteer advertisement.
  2. I can understand the main idea before I focus on details.
  3. I can decide if a fictional person could fit the position.
  4. I can give a reason with because.
  5. I can ask a simple question if information is missing.
  6. I can write a short, structured message about a volunteer position.
  7. I can improve my own text after feedback.

Important: Understanding a difficult phrase in a text does not mean that you must already use that phrase yourself. First understand it. Then use a smaller set of useful phrases safely.

Before you start: What do you already know?

Write five words you connect with volunteering. Then compare with a partner.

Helpful starters:

  1. Volunteers can ...
  2. A volunteer helps ...
  3. I think volunteering is ...

A volunteer gives time and effort willingly, usually without being paid for the work. Expenses or support can still be provided. You can read more in volunteering and Ehrenamt.

Media warm-up: Listening and viewing

BBC Learning English: "What makes a good citizen?"

First viewing: Watch for the main idea. Do not stop at every unknown word.

Second viewing: Use captions if you need them. Listen for volunteer or volunteering and note one idea connected with helping a community.

Quick response:

  1. One idea I understood is ...
  2. A volunteer can help by ...

If the video feels fast, replay a short part. Understanding the main message is more important than catching every word.

Understand: The five-key strategy

When you read a volunteer advertisement, scan for five things:

Key Question Example
Place Where is it? at a community garden
Tasks What do you do? welcome visitors
Time When and how often? on Saturday mornings
Skills What should you be able to do? be friendly and reliable
Support What help do you get? training and a buddy

Tip: Read once for the big picture. Read again for the five keys.

Reading: Fictional volunteer advertisement

Training text – this organisation and position are fictional.

GREENBRIDGE COMMUNITY GARDEN – VOLUNTEER NEEDED
Place GreenBridge Community Garden, Westbridge. The garden is next to the town library.
Tasks Welcome visitors, water plants, sort light tools and help at simple Saturday activities.
Time Saturday mornings, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., twice a month from April to July.
Skills Be friendly, reliable and ready to work with other people. Basic English is enough. Gardening experience is not needed.
Support You get a short training, a volunteer buddy, gloves and tools. There are regular breaks. You do not work alone.

Main message: GreenBridge needs a volunteer for regular Saturday sessions. The person should be reliable and comfortable working with people. The organisation provides support.

Reading check: Find evidence

Answer in short English phrases.

  1. Where is the position?
  2. Name two tasks.
  3. When does the volunteer work?
  4. Name two useful skills.
  5. What support does the volunteer get?
  6. Does the volunteer need gardening experience?

Help: Copy only the key words you need. Do not copy the whole advertisement.

Respond: Who could fit?

All profiles are fictional.

Profile Information
Maya, 15 Free on Saturday mornings. Likes plants. Quiet at first, but kind and reliable.
Leo, 16 Friendly and reliable. Plays football every Saturday morning.
Samira, 15 Free on Saturday mornings. Likes talking to people. Has no gardening experience but wants to learn.

Decide which person or people could fit. More than one answer can be reasonable if you use evidence.

Sentence frames:

  1. Maya could fit because ...
  2. Leo may not fit because ...
  3. Samira could fit because ...
  4. The ad says ...

Do not guess about a person. Use only the information in the profile and the advertisement.

Analyse: Match the person to the position

Use this simple thinking chain:

ad requirement → profile evidence → decision

Example:

Time: Saturday mornings → Maya is free on Saturday mornings → time fits.

Now make three chains for one fictional profile.

Useful words: fits, does not fit, maybe, because, but, also.

Context vocabulary

Learn words in a useful phrase, not as isolated translations.

Word Easy meaning Useful phrase
volunteer a person who helps without normal pay work as a volunteer
task something you have to do a simple task
available free and able to come available on Saturdays
reliable someone people can depend on a reliable person
skill something you can do well communication skills
support help you receive get support
training learning how to do the work short training
buddy a person who helps you at the start a volunteer buddy

Mini challenge: Find four of these words in the advertisement.

Pronunciation: Clear is the goal

You do not need a "perfect" accent. Your goal is to be understandable.

Word Stress help Practice phrase
volunteer vol-un-TEER I want to volunteer.
available a-VAIL-a-ble I am available on Saturdays.
reliable re-LI-a-ble I am reliable.
support sup-PORT What support do I get?

Say each phrase slowly once, then at a normal speaking speed. If you record yourself, keep the recording private unless you freely choose to share it.

Listening practice with two voices

Ask two people in class to read the dialogue at a clear, moderate speed. Listen once without looking. Listen again and check details. A teacher may also read both parts with a short pause between speakers.

Voice A: Hi. We are looking for a volunteer for Saturday mornings.

Voice B: Do I need gardening experience?

Voice A: No. We give you training and a buddy.

Voice B: Great. I am free twice a month.

Listen for:

  1. the time
  2. experience
  3. support
  4. availability

Then change one detail and read the dialogue again with new information.

Functional grammar: Language you need

Keep the grammar small and useful.

Function Pattern Example
ability can + verb I can help visitors.
requirement need to + verb You need to be reliable.
no requirement do not need to + verb You do not need to have experience.
interest would like to + verb I would like to volunteer.
reason because + reason It fits me because I am free on Saturdays.
polite question Could you tell me ...? Could you tell me about the training?

Accuracy step 1: After can, use the base verb: I can help.

Accuracy step 2: Use on with days: on Saturday, on Saturdays.

Accuracy step 3: Give one clear reason with because.

Communicate: Ask and answer

Work in pairs. One person is a volunteer coordinator. One person uses a fictional profile.

Coordinator questions:

  1. Why are you interested?
  2. When are you available?
  3. What can you do well?
  4. Do you have any questions?

Applicant help:

  1. I am interested because ...
  2. I am available ...
  3. I can ...
  4. Could you tell me about ...?

If you do not understand, say:

  1. Could you say that again, please?
  2. Do you mean ...?
  3. Could you speak a little more slowly, please?

Safe communication is more important than speaking quickly.

Writing: A short volunteer email

Write a short message about the fictional GreenBridge position. About 70–100 words are enough.

Structure:

Part Help
Greeting Dear Volunteer Coordinator,
Reason I am writing about the volunteer position.
Fit I am available ... / I can ...
Reason I think the position fits me because ...
Question Could you tell me ...?
Ending Best wishes,

Use a fictional name only.

You do not need advanced language. Clear sentences and correct key structures are the goal.

Mediation: Explain the key information

A German-speaking classmate asks what the advertisement is about.

Explain the most important points in German or simple mixed-language notes:

  1. place
  2. main tasks
  3. time
  4. skills
  5. support

Do not translate every sentence. Mediation means giving the information another person needs.

Optional viewing: From position to application

BBC Learning English: "How to prepare for an interview – English at Work"

This video is a stretch task. You do not need to copy all the language.

Watch for one useful idea about showing your skills. Then complete:

A useful idea for an interview is ...

Feedback: Make your message clearer

Give feedback on a partner's fictional message. Check meaning first.

Check Yes / Not yet
I understand why the person is writing.
The message says when the person is available.
The message gives at least one useful skill.
The message gives a reason with because.
The message includes one polite question.
The sentences are easy to understand.

Give one strength and one next step.

Examples:

  1. Your reason is clear.
  2. Add when you are available.
  3. Check can + verb.
  4. This sentence is hard to understand. Try a shorter sentence.

For speaking, focus first on whether the message is understandable. Accent differences are normal.

Error analysis

Find and correct the problem.

Sentence Think about
I can to help visitors. can + verb
I am available in Saturday. day preposition
She can helps in the garden. verb after can
I would like volunteer. would like to + verb

Possible corrections:

  1. I can help visitors.
  2. I am available on Saturday.
  3. She can help in the garden.
  4. I would like to volunteer.

Now find one sentence in your own text that you can improve. Keep your own idea. Change only what helps the reader understand you better.

Revise: Improve your own text

Use this order:

  1. Meaning: Is my main message clear?
  2. Information: Did I include time and skills?
  3. Reason: Did I explain why the position fits?
  4. Grammar: Did I check can + verb and on Saturday?
  5. Question: Did I ask politely?
  6. Final read: Can another person understand it easily?

Write a second version. Do not replace your whole text with somebody else's version.

If you use an AI tool or another digital helper, check every suggestion against the advertisement and a reliable source. Keep your own text and your own decisions. Do not enter personal data, private recordings or real applications into an external AI tool without clear permission.

Transfer: Another volunteer setting

Imagine a different fictional position: Community Event Helper.

Possible information:

  1. place: school community hall
  2. tasks: welcome guests, show rooms, tidy light materials
  3. time: one Friday afternoon
  4. skills: friendly, organised, calm
  5. support: short briefing and a team leader

Use the same five-key strategy: place – tasks – time – skills – support.

Then write two sentences:

  1. This position could fit ... because ...
  2. One question I would ask is ...

Can-do check

Mark what you can do now.
