A dictionary entry gives you more than one translation.

Look for these four things:

1. meaning – What does the word mean here?
2. word class – Is it a noun, verb or adjective?
3. pronunciation – How does the word sound?
4. example – How is the word used in a sentence?

Mini-model:

book verb – buchen We need to book a room.

Here, book is a verb. It does not mean Buch.

Think: What helped you: the translation, the word class or the example?

Understand: Context chooses the translation

A word can have more than one meaning.

Example 1

Leo and Mia walked by the river. They sat on the bank and ate lunch.

A bilingual dictionary may show:

bank – Bank; Ufer

Try: Which meaning fits?

Answer: Ufer fits because Leo and Mia are by a river.

Example 2

Can you charge my phone?

charge can mean different things. Here it means aufladen.

Rule: Do not stop at the first translation. Read the whole sentence.

The 4-step dictionary check

1. Find the word. 2. Check meaning + word class. 3. Listen or look at pronunciation + example. 4. Choose the meaning that fits the sentence.

Reading: Which meaning fits?

Read the short text.

At the youth hostel

Sam and Noor arrive at a youth hostel. Sam says, “We need to book a room for one night.” Noor sees a notice: “Please leave your key at the desk.” Later, they walk to the river and sit on the bank.

Three words can have different meanings:

book – noun: Buch / verb: buchen key – Schlüssel / wichtig, zentral bank – Bank / Ufer

Your job:

1. book means buchen.
2. key means Schlüssel.
3. bank means Ufer.

Why? The sentence around the word gives you the clue.

Vocabulary in context

Use these chunks again and again:

The word is ... It is a noun / verb / adjective. The dictionary gives ... In this sentence, ... fits. The example helps because ...

Mini-task:

We need to book a room.

Complete:

The word is book. It is a verb. In this sentence, buchen fits.

Pronunciation

You do not need to learn the whole phonetic alphabet now.

Start with two tools:

1. Use the speaker button in an online learner's dictionary.
2. Look for the stress mark or pronunciation line if your dictionary shows it.

The chart shows many IPA symbols. For this course, you only need to know: dictionaries can use special symbols to show sounds.

Try:

Choose one new word. Listen. Repeat it two times. Then say it in a short sentence.

Example: I want to book a room.

Goal: Be understandable. You do not need to copy one perfect accent.

Speaking

Work with a partner.

A: What does bank mean here? B: The dictionary gives Bank and Ufer. A: Which one fits? B: Ufer fits because the sentence is about a river.

Now change the word:

book – key – light – charge

Use this speaking frame:

The dictionary gives ... and ... . I choose ... because ... .

Optional recording: You may record your own answer privately. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless your teacher explicitly asks you to use a safe school system.

Writing

Write four connected sentences.

Writing frame:

My word is ... . It is a ... . The dictionary gives ... . In my sentence, ... fits because ... .

Word bank:

noun – verb – adjective – meaning – example – context – fits

Model:

My word is book. It is a verb. The dictionary gives Buch and buchen. In my sentence, buchen fits because we need a room.

Mediation mini-task

Your German-speaking friend sees this sign:

Please leave your key at the desk.

Do not translate every word automatically.

Explain the important message in German:

Lege / gib deinen Schlüssel an der Rezeption ab.

Now say what you checked in the dictionary.

Hint: desk can mean different things. In a hostel context, front desk is the reception.

Do not learn a long grammar rule. Ask:

Reason: The sentence is about training.

Feedback and improve

Check your answer with these questions:

1. Did I read the whole sentence?
2. Did I check the word class?
3. Did I look at more than one translation?
4. Did I use an example?
5. Did I check pronunciation if I want to say the word?

If one answer is no, improve your work and try again.

A dictionary is your main tool for this task.

If you use AI as extra help:

1. Check the suggested meaning in a reliable dictionary.
2. Check whether the meaning fits the sentence.
3. Keep your own sentence and your own decision.
4. Do not enter private data.
5. Do not let AI replace your own text.
