E7 G - Book and film recommendations

Mini description: Understand short book and film recommendations. Find three parts: description, opinion and reason. Then make your own short recommendation.

Your learning path: notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again

I can ...

  1. I can understand a short recommendation.
  2. I can find a description, an opinion and a reason.
  3. I can say: I recommend ...
  4. I can give a simple reason with because.
  5. I can write 4–6 connected sentences.

What do you know already?

Look at the picture first.

Think in English first:

Book or film? Funny, exciting or boring? Would you recommend it?

Try:

I like ... I don't like ... It is ... I recommend it because ...

Hint: You do not need perfect English. Short sentences are fine.

Notice: three important parts

A short recommendation often has three parts:

  1. Description: What is it about?
  2. Opinion: What do you think?
  3. Reason: Why do you think that?

Model:

Shadow Island is an adventure film. It is about two friends on a strange island. I think it is exciting because the story has many surprises. I recommend it.

The title and people are fictional.

Spot it:

It is about two friends on a strange island. → description

I think it is exciting. → opinion

because the story has many surprises. → reason

Useful chunks

Use English chunk Help
describe It is about ... Es geht um ...
give an opinion I think it is ... Ich finde / denke ...
give a reason because ... weil ...
recommend I recommend it. Ich empfehle es.
do not recommend I don't recommend it. Ich empfehle es nicht.

Use the English chunk first. Look at the German help only if you need it.

Listening and viewing

First viewing: films

Watch only a short part first. Start around 0:47 and stop after about one minute.

First try – no transcript.

Listen for:

  1. film types
  2. one opinion
  3. one word you know

Second try: Watch again. Now listen for a reason.

Hint: You do not need every word.

Mini transcript model after your listening try:

I like adventure films. I think they are exciting because the stories move fast.

What is the opinion? What is the reason?

Second viewing: opinions

Listen for short opinion phrases. Stop when you have heard two useful chunks.

Try to catch:

I think ... In my opinion ... because ...

German help if needed: Du musst nicht das ganze Video verstehen. Suche nur nach bekannten Signalwörtern.

Reading

Short recommendation 1: book

Mia, 13 – fictional profile

The Secret Door is a mystery book. It is about a girl who finds a locked room in an old house. I think the story is exciting because every chapter has a new clue. I recommend it to mystery fans.

Find:

Description: What is the book about? Opinion: What does Mia think? Reason: Why does she think that?

Short recommendation 2: film

Noah, 12 – fictional profile

Robot School is a comedy film. It is about a robot that starts at a normal school. I think the film is funny because the robot makes silly mistakes. I recommend it for a film night with friends.

Find the three parts again.

Hint 1: It is about ... often starts a description. Hint 2: I think ... often starts an opinion. Hint 3: because ... often starts a reason.

Compare

Which text is about a book? Which text is about a film? Which recommendation sounds more interesting to you?

Answer with one short reason:

I choose ... because ...

Vocabulary in context

Use only a few new words at one time.

Word Simple meaning Example

funny makes you laugh The film is funny.
boring not interesting The first part is boring.
scary makes you feel afraid The monster is scary.
character a person in a story My favourite character is Sam.
story what happens The story is easy to follow.

Mini try: Choose two words and make two short sentences.

Pronunciation

Say these chunks slowly first:

I recommend it. I think it's exciting. because the story is funny.

Then say them again as one connected message:

I recommend it because the story is funny.

Focus: Make the important words clear. You do not need a perfect accent.

Clap the strong words:

I RECommend it beCAUSE the STORy is FUNny.

Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher gives a clear safe task.

Word bank

types: adventure – comedy – mystery – fantasy – action

opinions: funny – exciting – interesting – scary – boring

reasons: good story – funny characters – exciting action – easy to understand – great ending

Remember: Your own ideas are important. AI feedback may help you check language, but it should not replace your text.

Mediation: short and useful

A friend says in German:

Ich suche einen lustigen Film. Er soll leicht zu verstehen sein.

Do not translate every word. Give the important message in English:

My friend wants a funny film that is easy to understand.

Now recommend one fictional film:

Try Robot School because ...

Functional grammar

because = reason

Use because to give a reason.

I like the book because the story is exciting.

I recommend the film because it is funny.

Do not make the sentence too long.

Present simple for recommendations

Use the present simple for the story and your opinion:

The film is about two friends. The story starts in London. I think it is funny.

E outlook: past perfect

Only as a small extra:

I liked the ending because the hero had found the missing key.

You only need to notice this form here. It is not the main goal of this course.

Feedback and improve

Check your recommendation.

Check Yes / not yet
I name the book or film.
I give a short description.
I give my opinion.
I give a reason with because.
My message is easy to understand.

Improve one thing only. Then read or say your recommendation again.

Mini-transfer

Situation:

A classmate has 20 minutes free and wants a short, funny story.

Choose a book or a film and give a 3-sentence recommendation.

Use:

Try ... It is about ... I recommend it because ...

Self-check

Choose:

I can do this alone. I can do this with help. I need more practice.

  1. I can find a description.
  2. I can find an opinion.
  3. I can find a reason.
  4. I can understand a short recommendation.
  5. I can give my own recommendation.
