E7 M - Word families help you understand
E7 M - Word families help you understand
Mini-Beschreibung: Use familiar prefixes, suffixes and word families to work out meanings and grow your vocabulary. This aiMOOC is for English as a first foreign language, Year 7, M level, Baden-Württemberg.

Media start – Notice: Look at the prefix cloud. Which parts do you already know? Choose three and make a quick guess: What could they do to a word?
Einleitung
Words are often connected. If you know help, you can understand parts of helpful, helpless and helper. If you know that re- often means “again”, rewrite becomes easier to guess. You do not need to translate every word. First look at the word, then the sentence, then the situation.
Learning path: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.
English first: Try the English task first. Use context, pictures and word parts. Open the German hint only if you still need it.
I can …
- I can spot common prefixes and suffixes in new words.
- I can use a word family to guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
- I can check my guess with the context.
- I can use new family members in short speaking and writing tasks.
- I can explain my strategy in simple English.
What you already know
Try these without a dictionary:
- unhappy → What does un- probably do?
- player → What does -er tell you?
- careless → How is it different from careful?
- rewrite → What does re- add to the meaning?
Hint: Think about position: a prefix comes before the base word; a suffix comes after it.
Deutsch nur wenn nötig: Ein Präfix steht vor dem Wortstamm, ein Suffix danach. Beide können Bedeutung oder Wortart verändern.
Notice: Build words from parts
A word family is a group of related words. They share a base and part of their meaning.
help → helpful → helpless → helper
care → careful → careless → carefully
use → useful → useless → user
A prefix is added before a base: re + write = rewrite. A suffix is added after a base: help + ful = helpful.

Media task: Study the word matrix. Do not try to read it as one long word. Start in the middle and follow possible paths. What stays the same? What changes?
Useful prefixes
| Prefix | Helpful meaning | Example | Quick meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| un- | not / opposite | unhappy | not happy |
| re- | again | rewrite | write again |
| dis- | not / opposite / reverse | dislike | not like |
| im- | not | impossible | not possible |
Important: A word part gives you a clue, not a perfect translation. Always check the sentence.
Viewing – Notice → understand: Listen for the word prefix. Write down two examples you hear. Then explain in one English sentence what a prefix does.
Hint: “A prefix comes … and can change …”
Useful suffixes
| Suffix | Often tells you | Example | Meaning clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ful | adjective | helpful | full of / giving |
| -less | adjective | careless | without |
| -er | person / thing | player | a person who plays |
| -ness | noun | kindness | the state or quality |
| -ly | often an adverb | slowly | in this way |
Listening – Try: Before you watch, predict the difference between careless and care-free. While listening, check which suffixes you notice. After watching, make one new example with -less.
Understand: Use three clues
When you meet a new word, use three clues:
- Word clue: Find the base, prefix or suffix.
- Context clue: Read the whole sentence.
- Situation clue: Use the picture, topic or speaker’s message.
Example: “Mia was careless and left her bag on the bus.”
care + -less suggests “without care”. The situation also shows that Mia did not pay enough attention. So your guess is strong.
Strategy sentence: “I think ___ means ___ because the word part ___ means ___ and the context says ___.”
Reading: The school podcast team
Read once for the main idea. Read again and mark word-family clues.
Text:
On Tuesday, the school podcast team prepared a short episode about a charity run. At first, Leo felt unprepared because he had forgotten his notes. Maya was more careful: she had a short plan and a list of useful questions. During the interview, one answer was unclear, so Maya politely asked the guest to explain it again. Leo then rewrote one question and used simpler words. After the recording, the team listened carefully and chose the most helpful parts. Their first version was not perfect, but the group stayed positive. They learned that good communication is not about using the longest words. It is about choosing words that listeners can understand.
Try: Work out unprepared, careful, unclear, rewrote and helpful without a dictionary first.
Check: Which clue helped most: word part, context or situation?
German help if needed: Suche zuerst Stamm und Vor-/Nachsilbe. Prüfe dann, ob Deine Vermutung zum ganzen Satz passt.
Vocabulary in context

Use a word map for one base word. Put the base in the centre and add family members around it.
| Base | Family members | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| help | helpful, helpless, helper | The map was helpful. |
| care | careful, careless, carefully | Please read the task carefully. |
| use | useful, useless, user | This clue is useful. |
| happy | unhappy, happiness | Her happiness was easy to see. |
Mini-transfer: Choose help, care, use or happy. Add two correct family members and use one in your own sentence.
Pronunciation: Hear the family
Word families can sound similar, but stress and endings may change. Speak clearly; you do not need to copy one particular accent.
Try these chains slowly, then at a natural pace:
help → helpful → helpless
care → careful → carefully
happy → unhappy → happiness
Listen to yourself: Can a partner hear the base word? Are the endings clear enough to understand the meaning?
Private option: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep the recording private unless you choose to share it. No upload is needed.
Speaking: Ask, react, explain
Work with a partner.
Student A chooses a word: unfriendly, rewrite, careless, useful, happiness.
Student B says: “I think it means … because …”
Student A reacts: “I agree because …” or “I’m not sure. Look at …”
Then switch roles.
Challenge: Add a short example situation.
Feedback: Was the explanation understandable? Did the speaker use the word part and the context?
Writing: A short message with word families
Write 80–100 words to a class partner about a school activity, hobby or project. Use at least four words from two different word families.
Possible starters: “Last week our group …” “At first, I was …” “One useful thing was …” “Next time, I will …”
Self-check before feedback:
- I used four target words.
- The target words fit the meaning.
- My message has a clear beginning and ending.
- I checked spelling with the base word.
AI note: If a teacher allows an AI tool, use it only to check one point, for example whether a suffix fits. Check the feedback yourself and keep your own text. Do not enter private data.
Mediation: Explain the strategy
Your German-speaking classmate asks: “How can I understand unhelpful without translating every word?”
Explain the strategy in simple German, but keep the example word in English. Mention:
- the base word
- the prefix or suffix
- the sentence context
Then return to English and make a new example.
Functional grammar: Word class clues
Suffixes can give a clue about a word’s job in a sentence.
help can be a verb: “Can you help me?”
helper is a noun: “The helper carried the boxes.”
helpful is an adjective: “The helper was helpful.”
carefully is an adverb: “She listened carefully.”
These patterns are useful, but English has exceptions. Use the sentence to check.
Viewing – Use: Choose three examples from the video. Sort them into prefix, suffix or both/word building. Then make one new sentence.
Step-by-step help
Help 1 – English clue: Look for a small part you already know.
Help 2 – Context clue: Replace the new word with your guess. Does the sentence still make sense?
Help 3 – Word family clue: Think of another word with the same base.
Help 4 – German support: Erst wenn nötig: Zerlege das Wort und prüfe die Bedeutung im Satz. Übersetze nicht automatisch den ganzen Text.
Direct feedback
If your guess is wrong, do not just replace it. Ask:
- Did I choose the right base word?
- Did I confuse a prefix and a suffix?
- Did I ignore the context?
- Does the word class fit the sentence?
Then improve your answer and use the word again in a new sentence.
Mini-transfer: New words, new context
Read the mini-dialogue:
A: “The instructions are unclear. Can you explain step two again?” B: “Sure. I’ll rewrite it in a more helpful way.” A: “Thanks. That is much more useful.”
Task: Explain the four bold words without translating the whole dialogue. Then change the situation: sports club, school trip or gaming guide. Reuse at least two family words.
Self-/Can-do-Check
Mark each statement: Yes / Almost / Not yet.
- I can find the base in a familiar word family.
- I can use un-, re-, dis- and im- as meaning clues.
- I can use -ful, -less, -er, -ness and -ly as clues.
- I can check a guess with context.
- I can explain a word-guessing strategy in English.
- I can use new family words in speaking and writing.
Use again: Choose one “Almost” or “Not yet” point and repeat one task above with a different word.
