E7 G - Living in a city
E7 G - Living in a city

Mini description: Learn useful words for city life, transport, places and activities. Understand a short city description. Then use the words to speak and write about a city.
Level: English, first foreign language · Klasse 7 · G-Niveau · Baden-Württemberg
How to learn here: English first → try → use pictures and context → take a hint → use German help only if you need it.
Media start: What can you see?
Look at the picture above for 20 seconds.
- Say or write three words you already know in English.
- Find one kind of transport.
- Find one thing people can do in this place.
Try first: “I can see …” · “There is …” · “People can …”
Hint: street · bike · bus · building · people
Deutsch-Hilfe: Beschreibe nur, was Du wirklich siehst. Ein einfacher Satz reicht.
Viewing task: Watch a short part first without stopping. How many place words do you recognise? Watch again and say two words with the speaker.
I can …
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can name important places in a city.

- I can understand a short city description.
- I can use there is / there are and can in simple sentences.

- I can write a short city text with a writing frame.
What do you already know?
Complete the chunks. Try without help first.
In a city I can see … a park, a …
I go to school by … bus, …
After school I can … meet friends, …
Quick help: You can also use words from German that look similar, but check them before you use them.
Notice: City words in pictures

Notice the chunks:
- take the bus
- wait at the bus stop
- go to the library
- meet friends in the park
- buy food at the market
- take a train at the station
Do not learn single words only. Learn a small chunk: go to the park, not only park.
Places

Core words: park · library · school · supermarket · market · museum · station · bus stop · café · sports centre
Try: Point to a place in a picture or imagine it. Say: “This is a …”
Hint: “You can borrow books at the …”
Deutsch-Hilfe: library = Bibliothek · station = Bahnhof/Station · market = Markt

Mini task: Choose one: “I can buy food at the market.” / “I can borrow books at the market.”
Transport
Core words: bus · train · bike · car · tram · underground/subway · walk
Useful chunks:
- go by bus
- take the train
- ride a bike
- walk to school
Language note: In British English you often hear underground. In American English you often hear subway. Both can be useful.

Try: “I usually go to school by …”
Hint: by bus · by train · by bike · on foot
Deutsch-Hilfe: on foot = zu Fuß
Activities

In a city, people can:
- meet friends
- go shopping
- play sports
- visit a museum
- read in a library
- eat in a café
- walk in a park
Mini-transfer: Choose two activities you like. Say: “I like to …”
Understand: Listening and Viewing
First viewing: Watch only a short section. Do not try to understand every word. Tick mentally: place, transport or activity?
Second viewing: Listen for five words you know.
Third step: Use this word bank only now: library · park · station · supermarket · museum
Feedback: If you understood the topic and two or three key words, that is already successful listening.
Mini listening: A day in Rivergate
Rivergate is fictional.
Ask a teacher or partner to read the text below twice. Do not read the transcript before your first listening.
Listen 1: Where is Sam after school?
Listen 2: How does Sam get there?
Word bank after listening: bus · park · library · friends
Transcript – read only after two listening tries
“Hi, I’m Sam. I live in Rivergate. After school, I take the bus to the city centre. I often go to the library. On Fridays, I meet my friends in the park. We sometimes buy a snack at the market.”
Check: Sam takes the bus. Sam goes to the library. On Fridays, Sam meets friends in the park.
Deutsch-Hilfe nur wenn nötig: city centre = Stadtzentrum · snack = kleiner Imbiss
Reading: Welcome to Rivergate

Read once for the main idea. Do not translate every word.
Rivergate is a small city. There is a train station near the city centre. There are two parks and a big library. Many students go to school by bus or bike. After school, they often meet friends in the park or go to the sports centre. On Saturdays, families visit the market. The city is busy, but there are quiet places too.
Try:
- Find two places.
- Find two types of transport.
- Find one Saturday activity.
- Is Rivergate only busy? Find the answer in the text.
Hint: Look for the exact words in the text.
Deutsch-Hilfe: busy = belebt · quiet = ruhig
Reading strategy
Use three steps:
- Look: What is the topic?
- Find: Search for key words from the question.
- Check: Read one sentence before and after the key word.
You do not need every word to understand the text.
Vocabulary in context
Complete the sentence in your head before you look at the help.
I borrow a book at the …
Hint: It starts with l.
Answer: library
I wait for a bus at the …
Hint: two words.
Answer: bus stop
I buy fruit and vegetables at the …
Hint: It can be outside.
Answer: market
I take a train at the …
Hint: It ends with station.
Answer: train station
Word bank
| Place / transport | Useful chunk |
|---|---|
| library | borrow a book |
| park | meet friends |
| market | buy food |
| bus stop | wait for the bus |
| station | take the train |
| bike | ride a bike |
Learn the chunk, then make one new sentence with it.
Pronunciation: Clear is the goal
You do not need a perfect accent. Your goal is clear speech.
Say the words slowly first:
LIB-rary · MAR-ket · STA-tion · MU-se-um · SU-per-mar-ket
Now use short chunks:
at the station · in the park · by bus · ride a bike
Try again: Say one chunk slowly, then at normal speed.
Feedback: Can a partner understand the word? Then your pronunciation works.
Functional grammar
There is / There are
Use there is for one thing.
There is a library near the park.
Use there are for more than one thing.
There are two bus stops near the school.
Try:
“There is a … in my town.”
“There are … near my school.”
Deutsch-Hilfe: Es geht darum zu sagen, was es an einem Ort gibt.
Can for activities
Use can + basic verb.
You can visit the museum.
You can take the bus.
You can meet friends in the park.
Try: “In my town, you can …”
Place words
Use simple prepositions:
in the park · at the station · near the school · next to the library
Model: “The café is next to the library.”
Hint: Start with one place, then add the position.
Try: Speaking
Work with a partner. Use short turns.
A: What is your favourite place in the city?
B: My favourite place is the park.
A: What can you do there?
B: I can meet friends and play basketball.
A: How do you get there?
B: I go there by bus.
Help 1 – sentence starters: My favourite place is … · I can … · I go there by …
Help 2 – word bank: park · library · market · sports centre · bus · bike · walk
Deutsch-Hilfe nur wenn nötig: Lieblingsort nennen → Aktivität nennen → Verkehrsmittel nennen.
Speaking feedback
Your partner checks only three things:
- Did I understand the main idea?
- Did I hear one place and one activity?
- Did the speaker use a complete short sentence?
Then say one helpful sentence: “I understood …” or “Try this sentence again: …”
Writing
Write 5–7 short sentences about a real or fictional city.
Writing frame:
“My city is …”
“There is a …”
“There are …”
“I usually go by …”
“After school, I …”
“My favourite place is … because …”
“You can … there.”
Word bank: park · library · station · market · bus · bike · meet friends · go shopping · play sports · read
Check before you finish: capital letter · full stop · there is/are · one transport word · one activity
Important: If you use digital or AI feedback, check whether it fits your G-level task. Keep your own ideas and your own sentences. Do not let a tool replace your text.
Mediation: Help a visitor
A visitor asks in English: “What can I do in your town?”
You have these German notes:
“Im Zentrum gibt es einen Markt. Am Bahnhof fahren Busse ab. Im Park kann man Freunde treffen.”
Do not translate word for word. Give the important information in simple English.
Starter: “In the city centre, there is …”
Hint: market · station · bus · park · meet friends
Mini-transfer: Your place
Choose a real place you know or invent one.
Say or write:
- one place
- one transport option
- one activity
- one sentence with there is / there are
Model: “There is a park near the station. I go there by bike. I can meet my friends there.”
Feedback → Improve → Use again
Read your sentence once.
Check 1: Meaning – Is it easy to understand?
Check 2: Chunk – Did you use a useful chunk such as go by bus or meet friends?
Check 3: Grammar – Is there is / there are correct?
Now improve one sentence and use it again in speaking.
Self-check: Can do
Give yourself one of these signs: ✓ = yes · ~ = not yet · ? = I need help.
- I can name five city places.
- I can name three types of transport.
- I can understand the main idea of a short city text.
- I can say what people can do in a city.
- I can use there is / there are.
- I can speak for about 20–30 seconds with sentence starters.
- I can write 5–7 simple connected sentences.
If you have many ~ or ?, repeat the pictures, word bank and speaking model before you continue.
