Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Vermittle in einem kurzen Rollenspiel mehrere zentrale Informationen zwischen einer deutsch- und einer englischsprachigen Person. Bleib höflich und gib den Sinn verständlich weiter.

In this mini-course, you are the language bridge. You do not translate every word. You listen, pick the important information and say it clearly in the other language.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

All names, times and places in the tasks are fictitious.

Useful phrases

Use the phrases as tools. You do not need to say every sentence exactly like the model.

Start politely: Excuse me. / Hi. Can you help me, please?
Pass on information: She says ... / He says ... / The meeting is at ... / You need ...
Check: Do you mean ...? / Is that right?
Ask again: Could you repeat that, please? / Could you say that more slowly, please?
Close: Thanks. / Thank you for your help.

Say these chunks aloud:

Excuse me. Could you repeat that, please? The meeting starts at half past two. You need your sports shoes.

Speak clearly. Being understandable is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Understand: A short mediation situation

The situation

You are at a school in Baden-Württemberg. Your German-speaking teacher, Frau Weber, gives information about a sports club. Your English-speaking exchange student, Alex, does not understand German.

Frau Weber says: „Die Sport-AG ist am Freitag um 14:30 Uhr in der kleinen Sporthalle. Alex soll Hallenschuhe und eine Trinkflasche mitbringen. Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos. Treffpunkt ist vor dem Haupteingang.“

You need to tell Alex the important information.

Try English first.

Hint: Find five key details: day, time, place, things to bring, cost/meeting point.

German help: Du musst nicht Wort für Wort übersetzen. Gib die wichtigen Informationen verständlich weiter.

Example: The sports club is on Friday.

Possible solution: The sports club is on Friday at 2:30. It is in the small sports hall. Bring your sports shoes and a water bottle. It is free. Meet in front of the main entrance.

Alex: Excuse me. What did Frau Weber say?

You: The sports club is on Friday at 2:30 in the small sports hall.

Alex: Do I need anything?

You: Yes. Bring sports shoes and a water bottle. It is free.

Alex: Where do we meet?

You: In front of the main entrance.

Alex: Great, thanks!

Your turn: Add one question

Choose one question for Alex:

What time does it start? Where do we meet? Do I need to bring anything? Does it cost anything?

Answer without translating the whole German message again.

Polite requests in English

Listen for words such as could, please and polite openings. Then use one phrase in your own dialogue.

Use: Mediate in both directions

Round 2: Alex answers in English

Alex says:

“I can come on Friday, but I may be ten minutes late because my bus arrives at 2:25. Please tell Frau Weber that I will come straight to the sports hall.”

Tell Frau Weber the important information in German.

Try first: Alex kann ...

Hint: Three key ideas: he can come, he may be ten minutes late, he will go straight to the sports hall.

German help: Formuliere natürlich auf Deutsch. Nicht jedes englische Wort braucht ein deutsches Gegenstück.

Example: Alex kann am Freitag kommen.

Possible solution: Alex kann am Freitag kommen. Er könnte ungefähr zehn Minuten zu spät sein, weil sein Bus erst um 14:25 Uhr ankommt. Er geht dann direkt zur Sporthalle.

Mini challenge: Keep the conversation going

Frau Weber says: „Das ist in Ordnung. Alex soll mir kurz Bescheid sagen, wenn er da ist.“

Now tell Alex.

Possible solution: That’s okay. Please tell Frau Weber when you arrive.
