E6 G - Much and many verstehen

Mini-Beschreibung: In this aiMOOC you connect many with familiar countable nouns and much with familiar uncountable nouns. You work with pictures, short audio, simple questions and mini-dialogues. Try English first. Use German help only when you need it.

Look: many apples. Can you count them?

Look: much water. We do not count water as single items.

Einleitung

Your question: How do I choose much or many?

Short answer:

Word Use it with ... Example
many countable plural nouns many apples
much uncountable nouns much water

Merksatz auf Deutsch: Dinge, die Du einzeln zählen kannst, passen meist zu many. Stoffe oder Mengen, die Du nicht als einzelne Stücke zählst, passen meist zu much.

Today we focus on: How many books? – How much water?

Media start: Look and listen

Think: books → one book, two books, three books → many books

Think: rice → not one rice, two rices → much rice

Think: milk → much milk

Listen and repeat.

Say it slowly: How many? – How much?

Hint: Listen for the last sound in many and much.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst nicht wie ein Muttersprachler oder eine Muttersprachlerin klingen. Wichtig ist, dass man Dich gut versteht.

I can – Lernziele

I can ... Ich kann ...
I can use many with countable plural nouns. many mit zählbaren Nomen im Plural verbinden.
I can use much with uncountable nouns. much mit nicht zählbaren Nomen verbinden.
I can ask simple questions with How many...? and How much...? einfache Mengenfragen stellen.
I can understand a short dialogue about food and school things. einen kurzen Dialog verstehen.
I can write two or three correct quantity questions. zwei oder drei passende Mengenfragen schreiben.

Before you start – Vorwissen-Check

Try English first.

Which words can you count as single things?

Word Your idea
apples countable / uncountable
books countable / uncountable
water countable / uncountable
milk countable / uncountable
rice countable / uncountable

Hint: Can you say one ..., two ..., three ...?

Deutsch-Hilfe: Wenn Du einzelne Dinge zählen kannst, ist das Nomen hier countable.

Example: one book – two books – three books.

Solution: apples and books are countable. Water, milk and rice are uncountable in these examples.

Notice

See the pattern

How many oranges are there?

You can count oranges: one orange, two oranges, three oranges.

So we say: many oranges.

How much water is there?

We do not count water as single pieces.

So we say: much water.

Notice:

Countable Uncountable
many apples much water
many books much milk
many pencils much rice
many bananas much juice

Short video input

Watch only as much as you need. Pause and repeat.

Watch task: Listen for much and many. Write down one noun after each word.

Hint: You do not need to understand every word.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Höre gezielt auf die beiden Signalwörter und das Nomen direkt danach.

Understand

The simple rule

many + countable plural noun

Examples: many books, many apples, many pencils

much + uncountable noun

Examples: much water, much milk, much rice

For questions: How many books...? How much water...?

For negative sentences: I don't have many books. We don't have much milk.

Extra tip: In everyday positive sentences, English speakers often use a lot of: We have a lot of apples. You do not need this rule for the main task today.

Word bank

Countable nouns Uncountable nouns
apples water
books milk
pencils rice
bananas juice
sandwiches time

Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution

Task: Choose much or many for each word.

Hint: Can you count single items?

Deutsch-Hilfe: Prüfe: one book, two books – aber nicht one water, two waters in dieser Bedeutung.

Example: books → many books

Solution: many apples, many books, many pencils, many bananas, many sandwiches; much water, much milk, much rice, much juice, much time.

Practise

Picture practice

Look again at the pictures.

Say: There are many books.

Say: There is much milk.

Ask: How much rice is there?

Ask: How many apples are there?

Mini-dialogue: At the snack table

Mia: How many apples do we have?

Leo: We have six apples.

Mia: How much juice do we have?

Leo: We have one bottle of juice.

Mia: Do we have much milk?

Leo: No, we don't have much milk.

Task: Read the dialogue with a partner. Change apples and juice.

Sentence starters:

Ask Answer
How many ... do we have? We have ... .
How much ... do we have? We have ... .
Do we have much ...? Yes, we do. / No, we don't.

Listening practice

A teacher or partner can read this text slowly two times:

Audio script: “In our class box, we have many pencils and many books. We do not have much paper. At the snack table, we have many apples, but we do not have much juice.”

First listening: What school things do you hear?

Second listening: What food or drink words do you hear?

Hint: Listen for nouns after many and much.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Beim ersten Hören nur grob verstehen. Beim zweiten Hören gezielt auf die Nomen achten.

Solution: pencils, books, paper, apples, juice.

Privacy note: If you record your own voice, recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless your teacher gives a safe school option. Do not upload recordings without permission.

Pronunciation

Listen again:

Clap the rhythm: How MANY books? How MUCH water?

Speak clearly. Clear words are more important than a perfect accent.

Use

Speaking: Your classroom

Work with a partner.

Use real objects that you can see.

Student A asks: How many books are there?

Student B answers: There are ...

Then change roles.

For uncountable nouns, use a simple imagined situation: How much water is in the bottle? There is a little / a lot.

Word bank: books, pencils, chairs, bags, water, paper, time.

Reading: A simple class picnic

This is a fictional plan.

Class picnic plan: We have 12 sandwiches, 8 apples and 15 bananas. We have water and juice, too. We do not have much milk. We have many cups.

Questions:

  1. How many sandwiches do they have?
  2. Do they have much milk?
  3. Which three countable food nouns can you find?
  4. Which two uncountable drink nouns can you find?

Hint: Look for numbers. Numbers often stand with countable nouns.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Die Daten sind erfunden. Suche zuerst nach Zahlen und dann nach Getränken.

Solution: 12 sandwiches; no, they do not; sandwiches, apples, bananas; water, juice.

Writing: A short message

Write 3 short sentences for a fictional class snack.

Use this frame:

We have many ... .

We don't have much ... .

How many ... do we need?

Word bank: apples, bananas, sandwiches, water, juice, milk.

Check your text: many + plural countable noun much + uncountable noun

AI note: If you use an AI tool in a school context, check the answer and write your own final sentences. Do not send personal data or upload class material to an external AI service unless your school has approved it.

Sprachmittlung – German help to English

Your partner says in German: „Wir haben viele Äpfel, aber nicht viel Saft.“

Do not translate every word.

Say the main message in simple English.

Hint: apples → countable; juice → uncountable.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Nutze die bekannten Satzmuster.

Example: We have many ...

Solution: We have many apples, but we don't have much juice.

Feedback

Check two central errors

Error 1: much apples

Fix: many apples

Why? Apples are countable and plural.

Error 2: many water

Fix: much water

Why? Water is uncountable here.

Two-step feedback:

  1. First check the noun: countable or uncountable?
  2. Then choose many or much.

Use again

30-second challenge

Say four phrases:

many + school thing

many + food item

much + drink

much + uncountable school word

Possible answers: many books, many apples, much water, much paper.

Then ask two questions: How many ...? How much ...?
