Searching the Internet Effectively



Introduction

The internet can help you answer questions, learn new skills, compare ideas, and explore the world. But finding a useful answer is not the same as typing a whole question into a search box and clicking the first result. Searching the internet effectively means choosing good search words, reading results carefully, checking who created the information, comparing sources, and staying safe while you search.

This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 5–6. You will learn practical strategies that you can use for homework, projects, hobbies, and everyday questions. You will also learn why a search result is only a starting point: you still need to decide whether a source is useful and trustworthy.

When you search, a search engine shows a search results page. The page may contain ordinary web results, images, videos, maps, short answers, and sometimes advertisements or sponsored links. Your job is to choose results that match your purpose.


Learning Goals

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Choose useful keywords: Turn a question into a small set of strong search terms.
  2. Use search tools: Try quotation marks, minus signs, and other search tools when they are helpful.
  3. Judge information: Look at the author, date, purpose, evidence, and website before trusting a source.
  4. Check claims: Compare information with other reliable sources instead of trusting one page alone.
  5. Search safely: Protect personal information and avoid suspicious links, downloads, and messages.


How Search Engines Work

A search engine does not read the whole live internet from the beginning each time you type a query. Search companies use automated programs, often called web crawlers or spiders, to discover pages. Information about many pages is stored in a large index. When you search, the search engine looks through its index and tries to rank useful results for your query.

The diagram above shows parts of a web crawler system. You do not need to memorize the technical labels. The important idea is that search engines first discover and organize web pages, then use computer rules called algorithms to decide which results to show.

The Code.org video explains how crawling, indexing, and ranking help a search engine find possible answers. Search rankings can depend on many signals. This is why two different queries can produce different results, and why the first result is not automatically the best source for your school task.


Search Engine, Browser, and Website

These three words are easy to mix up.

A web browser is the program or app you use to open web pages, such as a browser on a computer, tablet, or phone.

A search engine is a service that helps you find pages by typing search terms.

A website is a collection of connected web pages, often owned by a person, school, organization, company, museum, library, or government agency.

For example, you can use a browser to visit a search engine, then use that search engine to find a museum website.


Start with a Clear Search Question

A good search begins before you type. First decide what you really want to know. A broad question such as Tell me everything about volcanoes can lead to too many results. A focused question such as Why do some volcanoes erupt explosively? gives you a clearer goal.

Next, pick the most important words. Search engines usually work well when you use meaningful nouns, names, places, and special terms.

For the question How do red foxes survive winter in northern Europe?, useful keywords might be:

red fox winter survival northern Europe

You can remove small words such as how, do, and the when they do not help. Then change or add terms if the results are too broad or too narrow.


Build Better Keywords

Think of keywords as clues. Strong clues make it easier for a search engine to understand your topic.

A useful pattern is:

main topic + detail + place or time

Examples:

  1. Animal research: red fox diet city parks
  2. History research: Viking ships trade Baltic Sea
  3. Science research: water cycle condensation experiment
  4. Geography research: rainforest rainfall South America

If your first search does not work, do not simply repeat it. Replace a word with a synonym, add a missing detail, or remove an unnecessary word.

The Google Search Education video introduces the idea that good searching is a skill. While the exact design and features of search engines can change, the habit of choosing precise search terms stays useful.


Useful Search Tools

Many search engines understand special symbols or words called search operators. Operators can help you make a search more exact. Different search engines do not always support the same operators, so treat them as tools to test rather than magic rules.


Quotation Marks for an Exact Phrase

Quotation marks can tell many search engines to look for words together in the same order.

Example:

"water cycle"

This can be useful when you are looking for an exact title, phrase, or name.


Minus Sign to Remove an Unwanted Meaning

A minus sign placed directly before a word can remove results containing that word in some search engines.

Example:

jaguar animal -car

This may help when one word has more than one common meaning.


Site Search to Look Inside One Website

Some search engines support the operator site:. It can limit results to one website or domain.

Example:

volcanoes site:nasa.gov

This is helpful when you already know that a particular organization is likely to have useful information.


AND, OR, and NOT

Some databases and search systems use Boolean operators such as AND, OR, and NOT. These operators combine or exclude ideas. Their exact behavior can vary between search tools.

For example, a library database search for wolves AND habitat asks for results connected to both ideas. A search for wolves OR foxes can broaden the search to either idea. In a normal web search engine, test the results because the engine may interpret these words differently.


Read the Results Page Before Clicking

A result page gives you clues. Look at more than the large blue title or picture. Depending on the search engine, a result can include a page title, the website or web address, a short text preview, a date, and labels such as Sponsored or Ad.

Before clicking, ask:

Does the title match my question? A page can contain your keyword but still be about a different topic.

Who runs the website? A museum, university, library, government agency, news organization, company, club, and personal blog have different purposes.

Is the result an advertisement? Sponsored results are paid placements. They may be useful, but payment does not make a source more accurate.

Does the web address look sensible? Check spelling and the main website name. A strange address can be a warning sign.


Do Not Automatically Choose Result Number One

A high ranking can make a result easy to notice, but ranking is not the same as truth. Search engines try to predict usefulness, and their systems are not your teacher. For school research, compare several promising results.

A good habit is to open two or three suitable sources and ask whether they agree on the main facts. If they disagree, investigate why.


Check Whether a Source Is Trustworthy

A useful source should fit your question and give you reasons to trust it. You can use the five-question check below.

Who? Who wrote or published the information? Can you find an author, organization, or expert?

What? What evidence is given? Are there facts, data, references, photographs, documents, or explanations that support the claim?

When? When was the page written or updated? For topics that change quickly, an old page may be less useful.

Why? Why was the page created? Is it trying to teach, report, persuade, entertain, or sell something?

Where else? Can you confirm the important claim using another reliable source?

Remember that a professional-looking page can still contain mistakes. Attractive design, lots of followers, or a confident writing style are not proof that a claim is correct.


Reliable Does Not Mean Perfect

No source is perfect. Even experts and trusted organizations can make mistakes or update their information. Good research means looking for evidence and comparing sources.

For many school topics, useful starting points can include:

  1. Libraries: Books, databases, and librarian-recommended resources.
  2. Museums: Collections and expert explanations about history, art, science, and culture.
  3. Universities: Educational pages and research information.
  4. Government agencies: Public information, statistics, science, and official guidance.
  5. Encyclopedias: Helpful overviews that can introduce key ideas and vocabulary.

A source type is not automatically reliable just because of its name. Always check the actual page and the evidence it gives.


Use Lateral Reading

When a website makes an important claim, do not stay only on that website. Lateral reading means opening new tabs and checking what other reliable sources say about the website, organization, author, or claim.

Try this simple method:

  1. Check the source: Search for the name of the organization or author.
  2. Check the claim: Search for the key fact in different words.
  3. Compare sources: Look for agreement among independent, reliable sources.
  4. Return and decide: Go back to the first page and decide how much you trust it.

The Crash Course and MediaWise video introduces the problem of false or misleading information online. Some parts may be more challenging for younger learners, so pause when needed and discuss unfamiliar words with a teacher or classmate.


Fact-Check Before You Share

A surprising claim can make you want to share it quickly. That is exactly when you should slow down.

Before sharing a claim:

  1. Read beyond the headline: A dramatic title may leave out important details.
  2. Find the original source: Look for where the fact, image, quote, or number first came from.
  3. Check the date: Old stories or images can be shared as if they are new.
  4. Compare coverage: See whether other reliable sources report the same thing.
  5. Check images carefully: A real image can be shown with a false caption or in the wrong context.

Search Safely

Effective searching also means protecting yourself.

Do not type private information such as your home address, passwords, private messages, school account passwords, or other sensitive details into an ordinary search.

Be careful with links that promise unbelievable prizes, demand urgent action, or ask you to download an unknown file. If something seems suspicious, stop and ask a trusted adult or teacher.

A secure HTTPS connection helps protect information while it travels between your device and a website. However, a padlock or HTTPS does not prove that everything on a website is true or that the website owner is trustworthy. You still need to check the source and the content.


Safe Searching in School

Follow your school rules, use age-appropriate services, and tell a teacher if search results show something disturbing or unsuitable. Never try to solve an unsafe situation by clicking more suspicious links.

When you use images, videos, or text in your own project, also think about copyright and citation. Give credit for information and media that you use. A simple school citation often includes the author or organization, page title, website name, and date you accessed it. Your teacher may ask you to use a particular citation style.


A Simple Search Strategy: PLAN–SEARCH–CHECK–USE

You can remember four steps.

PLAN your question. Decide what you need to find out and choose the most important ideas.

SEARCH with strong keywords. Try a different phrase or an operator if the first results are not useful.

CHECK the sources. Look at the author, date, purpose, evidence, and what other reliable sources say.

USE the information responsibly. Take notes in your own words, save the source details, and give credit.

This strategy is more important than memorizing a long list of search tricks. Search tools may change, but careful thinking remains useful.
