Research Writing and Citation



Introduction

Research Writing and Citation is a course for learners in Grades 11–13 who are preparing for research essays, extended projects, presentations, reports, and early university-level writing. You will learn how to move from a broad topic to a focused Research question, find and evaluate evidence, integrate sources into your own reasoning, document sources accurately, and revise for clarity and integrity.

Research writing is not simply collecting facts. It is a process of inquiry in which you ask a meaningful question, investigate what other people have discovered or argued, judge the quality of their evidence, develop your own position, and show readers exactly where your information comes from. Strong research writing combines curiosity, evidence, reasoning, structure, and transparent citation.

By the end of the course, you should be able to plan a research project, search strategically, distinguish stronger from weaker sources, synthesize information across sources, use quotation, paraphrase, and summary ethically, apply a required citation style consistently, and explain how your evidence supports your conclusions.


Research Writing as an Iterative Process

A good research project rarely moves in a perfectly straight line. You may begin with one question, discover better keywords, find evidence that changes your thinking, narrow the scope, return to the library or database, and revise your thesis. Treating research as an iterative cycle helps you respond intelligently to what you discover instead of forcing evidence to fit an early assumption.

A practical research cycle for school and introductory university work is: define the task, explore the topic, formulate a question, search for sources, evaluate evidence, take traceable notes, develop a provisional answer, draft, cite, revise, and check the final work. At any stage, new evidence may send you back to an earlier step.


From Topic to Research Question

A broad topic such as social media, renewable energy, or migration is not yet a research question. A useful question is focused enough to investigate, open enough to require analysis, and connected to evidence you can realistically obtain. Questions beginning with how, why, to what extent, or under what conditions often invite more analysis than questions that can be answered with a single fact.

For example, instead of asking Is social media good or bad?, you could investigate how a specific platform feature influences one measurable behavior in a defined age group and context. The improved question identifies variables, population, and scope. You can then refine it as you learn what evidence actually exists.

A strong Thesis statement is your current answer to the research question, not merely the topic. It should make a claim that can be supported, qualified, challenged, or revised. In many projects your thesis develops after substantial reading, because responsible research lets evidence influence the argument.


Keywords and Search Strategy

Turn your question into a set of core concepts. For each concept, list synonyms, broader terms, narrower terms, and discipline-specific vocabulary. Combine terms with Boolean operators when a database supports them: AND narrows by requiring both concepts, OR broadens by accepting alternatives, and quotation marks can search for an exact phrase.

Do not depend on one search query or one platform. Compare library catalogues, academic databases, trusted institutional websites, reference works, and scholarly search tools. Keep a short search log showing which terms you tried, what databases you used, and which searches produced useful results. This makes your research reproducible and helps you avoid repeating unproductive searches.


Finding and Evaluating Sources

Source quality depends on the question you are asking. A government dataset may be excellent for official statistics, a peer-reviewed article may be useful for recent research findings, a historical letter may be essential as a primary source, and a newspaper report may help you examine contemporary public debate. The goal is not to label every source simply good or bad, but to decide whether it is suitable evidence for a particular claim.

Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Sources

A Primary source provides direct evidence from the time, event, person, experiment, or dataset being studied. Examples can include interviews, diaries, legislation, photographs, raw data, speeches, laboratory results, or original research articles, depending on the discipline.

A Secondary source analyzes, interprets, compares, or critiques primary material or earlier research. Scholarly books and review essays are common examples. A Tertiary source summarizes established information from many sources, as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and some textbooks do. The same item can play different roles in different research questions, so classify a source by how it functions in your project.


Credibility, Relevance, and Lateral Reading

Evaluate sources by asking who created them, what evidence they provide, how transparent their methods are, when the information was produced or updated, why it was published, and whether independent trustworthy sources support the important claims. Relevance also matters: a highly credible source can still be unsuitable if it does not address your actual question.

For web sources, do not remain on one page and accept its self-description. Use lateral reading: open new tabs, investigate the author or organization, trace claims to their original context, and compare what independent sources say. This is especially important when a page has persuasive design but unclear expertise, sponsorship, evidence, or editorial standards.

A useful source evaluation record can include the source's purpose, author expertise, evidence quality, publication process, currency, limitations, possible conflicts of interest, and relevance to your question. Record your judgment in your own words instead of relying only on a checklist score.


Reading Scholarly Sources

Scholarly articles often have a recognizable structure, but the details differ across disciplines. Empirical research commonly includes an abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references. Humanities articles may organize evidence and interpretation differently. Read strategically: identify the research problem, central claim, evidence, method, assumptions, limitations, and relationship to earlier scholarship.

Peer review means that knowledgeable reviewers evaluate a manuscript before publication in many scholarly journals. It is an important quality-control process, but it does not guarantee that every claim is correct. You still need to examine methods, evidence, limitations, and later responses or replications.

Literature Reviews and Synthesis

A Literature review is not a sequence of mini-summaries. It organizes existing research around patterns, debates, methods, themes, gaps, or changes over time. Synthesis means putting sources into conversation with one another and with your own research question.

As you read, create a synthesis matrix. Put sources in rows and themes or subquestions in columns. Record what each source contributes, where sources agree or disagree, what methods they use, and what limitations matter. The matrix helps you build paragraphs around ideas rather than around one source at a time.


Writing with Evidence

Your paper needs a clear relationship between claim, evidence, and reasoning. A claim states what you want the reader to accept. Evidence gives relevant support. Reasoning explains why that evidence supports the claim, how strong the support is, and what limitations or alternative interpretations remain.

A paragraph that contains a quotation but no explanation is not automatically well supported. Introduce evidence, present it accurately, cite it, and then analyze its significance. Your own reasoning should guide the paragraph.

Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary

A quotation reproduces a source's exact wording and must be clearly marked as quoted material according to the citation style you are using. Quote when the precise wording is important, distinctive, contested, or itself the object of analysis.

A paraphrase restates a specific passage or idea fully in your own wording and sentence structure while preserving the original meaning. Changing a few words or rearranging phrases is not a sufficient paraphrase. Because the idea still comes from another source, a paraphrase normally requires citation.

A summary condenses the main point of a larger section or whole source. It also requires citation when you are presenting another author's ideas or findings. Summaries are useful when the overall argument matters more than exact wording or detail.

Before you write from a source, close or minimize it and explain the idea from your understanding. Then reopen the source to check accuracy, add the citation, and make sure your wording is genuinely independent unless you intended to quote.


Signal Phrases and Source Relationships

Signal phrases help readers understand who is speaking and how you are using a source. Verbs such as argues, reports, observes, finds, questions, concludes, and suggests carry different meanings, so choose them accurately.

Do more than stack citations. Compare sources explicitly: one study may extend another, use a different method, reach a conflicting conclusion, or study a different population. Writing these relationships makes your research paper analytical rather than merely informational.


Citation: Purpose and Systems

Citation has two central functions: it gives credit to the people whose work you use and gives readers a trail they can follow to verify or explore your evidence. Citation also reveals the intellectual network behind your argument. A citation does not prove that a source is high quality; source evaluation and citation are separate responsibilities.

Most academic citation systems connect a short marker in the text or a note with fuller publication details in a works-cited list, reference list, or bibliography. The exact rules differ, so follow the style required by your teacher, institution, discipline, journal, or assignment.


MLA, APA, and Chicago in Overview

MLA style is common in language and literary studies. Its in-text citations usually direct readers to an entry in a Works Cited list and often emphasize the author and location, such as a page number when relevant.

APA style is common in social and behavioral sciences. Its author-date system emphasizes who produced the work and when, and cited sources appear in a References list.

Chicago style offers two main systems. Notes and bibliography uses numbered footnotes or endnotes and is common in many humanities fields. Author-date uses brief parenthetical citations and a reference list and is common in some sciences and social sciences.

Do not mix styles randomly. Consistency matters, and details such as capitalization, punctuation, italics, author order, dates, page ranges, DOIs, and URLs can differ. When uncertain, consult the current official style guidance or the exact instructions for your assignment.


Building a Reliable Citation Record

As soon as you decide that a source may be useful, capture enough information to find it again: author or organization, title, container such as journal or website, publication date, volume and issue when relevant, page range, publisher, DOI or stable URL, and the date you accessed material when the style requires it.

Separate your own notes from copied wording. Use quotation marks in your research notes whenever you copy exact language, and record page numbers or other locations immediately. This prevents source amnesia, in which you later remember an idea but cannot reconstruct where it came from.

Citation generators and reference managers can save time, but they can import incomplete or incorrect metadata. Treat generated citations as drafts: compare them with the source and with authoritative style guidance before submitting your work.


Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, and Responsible AI Use

Plagiarism occurs when you present another person's words, ideas, data, structure, media, or other intellectual contribution as if it were your own without appropriate acknowledgement. Plagiarism can involve direct copying, inadequate paraphrasing, missing citations, misleading source use, or submitting work produced by someone else when the task requires your own work.

Academic integrity is broader than avoiding punishment. It means being transparent about how knowledge was produced, respecting other people's contributions, representing evidence accurately, and allowing readers or teachers to understand what you did yourself.

Policies for generative AI differ among schools, courses, publishers, and disciplines. Before using an AI system, check the assignment and institutional rules. If use is permitted, keep a record of what you used it for, verify factual claims and references independently, protect confidential information, and acknowledge or cite the use when your policy or citation style requires it. Never treat an AI-generated reference as real until you verify the original source.

The same principle applies to translation tools, collaborative documents, image generators, coding assistants, and other digital tools: disclose assistance when the rules require disclosure, and remain responsible for the final work.


Revision and Final Research Check

Revision is more than correcting grammar. First revise globally: Does the thesis answer the research question? Does each section advance the argument? Is the evidence sufficient and relevant? Have you addressed important counterevidence or limitations? Are paragraphs organized by ideas rather than by source?

Then revise locally: improve transitions, sentence clarity, terminology, quotation integration, and citation placement. Finally, compare every in-text citation or note with the final source list and every source-list entry with the paper. Remove unused entries if the required style expects only cited works.

A strong final check asks: Can a reader distinguish my ideas from source material? Can the reader locate every important borrowed claim? Have I represented sources fairly? Is the citation style consistent? Have I met the assignment's ethical and technical requirements?
