Introduction
Reproduction is the biological process by which living things produce new individuals. Development describes the changes that happen as a new organism grows and becomes more complex. In this aiMOOC, you will compare asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction, explore how meiosis produces sex cells, learn the main parts of the human reproductive systems, and follow human development from fertilization to birth.
The course is designed for Grades 7–8. The diagrams and videos are scientific and educational. Human bodies vary, and people do not all develop at the same time or in exactly the same way. In biology, the terms male reproductive system and female reproductive system describe typical anatomical patterns.

Reproduction in Living Things
Asexual Reproduction
In asexual reproduction, one parent produces offspring without the joining of gametes. The offspring are usually genetically very similar to the parent, although mutations can create differences. Asexual reproduction can be fast because an organism does not need to find a mate. Examples include binary fission in many bacteria, budding in yeast and hydra, and vegetative reproduction in some plants.
Asexual reproduction is useful when conditions are stable, but a population with little genetic variation may be less able to cope with a sudden environmental change.
Sexual Reproduction
In sexual reproduction, two gametes join during fertilization. In humans, the gametes are the sperm cell and egg cell. Each gamete carries one set of chromosomes. Their combination creates a new genetic mixture, so offspring are not genetically identical to either parent.
Sexual reproduction usually takes more time and energy than asexual reproduction, but it produces greater genetic variation. Variation can help populations adapt across generations.
Cells, Chromosomes, and Gametes
Most human body cells contain 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. Human gametes contain 23 chromosomes. This difference is important because fertilization joins two gametes and restores the usual number of 46 chromosomes in the new zygote.
Meiosis is the special type of cell division that makes gametes. It reduces the chromosome number by half and also reshuffles genetic information. This helps create variation among offspring.

Sperm cells are small and motile. An egg cell is much larger and contains materials that support the earliest stages after fertilization. Both are specialized cells with structures suited to their roles.
Human Reproductive Systems
Male Reproductive System
The testes produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. Sperm mature and are stored in the epididymis. During ejaculation, sperm travel through the vas deferens and mix with fluids from glands to form semen. The urethra carries semen out through the penis. The scrotum holds the testes outside the main body cavity, helping keep them at a temperature suitable for sperm production.

Female Reproductive System
The ovaries contain immature egg cells and produce hormones including estrogen and progesterone. Usually, one mature egg is released from an ovary during ovulation. The egg enters a fallopian tube. The uterus is a muscular organ where an embryo can implant and develop. The cervix is the lower opening of the uterus, and the vagina connects the cervix to the outside of the body.

Puberty and the Menstrual Cycle
Puberty
Puberty is the stage when hormonal signals cause the body to become sexually mature. The timing varies from person to person. Changes may include a growth spurt, more body hair, changes in body shape, increased activity of sweat and oil glands, and emotional or social changes. In typical male development, the testes and penis grow, sperm production begins, and the voice often becomes deeper. In typical female development, breasts develop, the hips may widen, menstruation begins, and ovulation becomes possible.
Puberty is only one part of adolescence. Adolescence also includes changes in thinking, emotions, relationships, and independence. It is normal for classmates of the same age to be at different stages of development.
The Menstrual Cycle
The menstrual cycle is a repeating sequence of changes in the ovaries and uterus. Hormones coordinate the cycle. During part of the cycle, an egg matures and the uterine lining thickens. Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from an ovary. If pregnancy does not begin, hormone levels change and the uterine lining is shed as a period.
A cycle is often described using a 28-day model, but real cycles vary in length and may be irregular, especially in the first years after menstruation begins. A diagram is a model, not a timetable that fits every person.

Fertilization and Early Development
Fertilization happens when the nucleus of a sperm cell joins with the nucleus of an egg cell. In humans, fertilization usually occurs in a fallopian tube. The resulting single cell is called a zygote.
The zygote divides repeatedly by mitosis as it moves toward the uterus. It develops into a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst. The blastocyst attaches to and becomes embedded in the uterine lining. This process is called implantation. Implantation is an important early step in establishing pregnancy.

Prenatal Development
After implantation, cells continue to divide and become specialized. During the embryonic stage, the basic body plan and early organ structures form. Later, the developing human is called a fetus. During the fetal stage, organs continue to grow and mature, and the body increases greatly in size.
Scientists and health professionals may count pregnancy time in different ways. Medical gestational age is usually counted from the first day of the last menstrual period, which is about two weeks before fertilization in a typical cycle. This is why pregnancy is often described as about 40 weeks by gestational age, even though development from fertilization to birth is usually about 38 weeks.

Placenta, Umbilical Cord, and Amniotic Fluid
The placenta is a temporary organ that develops during pregnancy. It allows oxygen and nutrients to pass from the pregnant person's blood supply toward the fetus and allows carbon dioxide and other wastes to move away from the fetus. Maternal and fetal blood normally do not simply mix together; exchange occurs across a thin barrier in the placenta.
The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta. The fetus is surrounded by amniotic fluid, which cushions it and allows movement.

Birth and Development After Birth
Near the end of pregnancy, hormones and signals from the body help start labor. During labor, the muscles of the uterus contract and the cervix opens. After birth, the newborn begins breathing with the lungs and the circulation changes to support life outside the uterus.
Development continues long after birth. Childhood and adolescence include growth, brain development, learning, and social development. Human development is therefore a long process, not an event that ends at birth.
Reproductive Health and Respectful Learning
Learning about reproduction involves both science and respect. Use correct anatomical terms, avoid teasing people about puberty, and remember that development varies. Questions about pain, unusual bleeding, delayed or very early puberty, pregnancy, or reproductive health are best discussed with a trusted adult and a qualified health professional.
Healthy relationships also depend on personal boundaries and consent. Consent means freely agreeing to an activity and can be withdrawn. Laws about sexual activity and age of consent vary by country, so students should follow local law and seek guidance from trusted adults and health professionals.
