Introduction
Painting is both a material process and a visual language. In this aiMOOC for Grades 9–10, you will learn how painters control colour, value, texture, transparency, opacity, edges, and brushwork to create meaning. You will compare several painting media, practise colour mixing, test techniques, analyse artworks, and develop your own visual decisions rather than simply copying a model.
By the end of the course, you should be able to explain how colour relationships work, select suitable painting techniques for an intended effect, document experiments, evaluate your own process, and use art vocabulary precisely when discussing a painting.

Colour as a Painting Tool
Colour is not only a label such as red or blue. Painters make decisions about several properties at once. Hue is the colour family. Value is how light or dark a colour appears. Saturation describes how intense or muted a colour appears. A colour can also feel relatively warm or cool depending on its neighbours.
A traditional artists' colour wheel often uses red, yellow, and blue as primary colours and places secondary colours between them. Real paint mixing is more complex because pigments have different physical properties. For many modern subtractive mixing systems, cyan, magenta, and yellow can produce a wider range of mixtures than a simple red-yellow-blue set. Digital screens use a different additive system based on red, green, and blue light. In this course, always ask whether you are mixing pigments or light.
Hue, Value, Saturation, Tint, Shade, and Tone
A painter can change one property while keeping another relatively stable. Adding white usually creates a tint and raises value. Adding black usually creates a shade and lowers value. In many classroom colour systems, adding grey creates a tone and reduces saturation. Mixing complementary pigments can also lower saturation and produce rich neutral colours.
Value is especially important for readable form. Two colours may be very different in hue but close in value, so they create weak light-dark contrast. Conversely, two colours can be similar in hue but strongly different in value.
Colour Relationships and Schemes
Complementary colours sit opposite one another on a traditional colour wheel. When placed side by side, they can create strong contrast. When mixed as pigments, they often reduce each other's saturation and move towards a neutral mixture. Analogous colours sit near one another and often create a unified effect. A triadic scheme uses three colours spaced around the wheel. A monochromatic scheme develops variations of one hue through changes of value and saturation.
Colour is also affected by context. The same colour sample can appear different when surrounded by lighter, darker, warmer, cooler, or more saturated colours. This means that painters should test colour relationships on the actual support instead of relying only on a colour name or a mixture viewed on the palette.
Mixing Colour with Purpose
Random mixing often creates muddy results because too many pigments are combined without a clear goal. Instead, begin with a target: do you need a warmer green, a duller violet, a lighter skin tone, or a darker neutral? Mix in small steps and record what you added.
A practical colour-mixing chart can compare:
- Primary mixtures: Mix pairs of chosen primary pigments and observe the secondaries you actually obtain.
- Tints: Add increasing amounts of white to one hue.
- Shades: Add small amounts of black or another dark pigment.
- Complementary neutrals: Mix opposite hues in different proportions.
- Temperature shifts: Compare a warm and a cool version of a similar hue.
Paint, Medium, Binder, and Support
Paint usually contains coloured material, called pigment, held in a binder. The binder affects how paint flows, dries, reflects light, and attaches to a surface. The support is the surface you paint on, such as paper, board, canvas, or prepared wood.
Comparing Common Painting Media
Watercolour is usually transparent and is often used on absorbent paper. Light commonly comes from the white paper shining through thin paint. Gouache is also water-based but is generally more opaque, so lighter shapes can be painted over darker areas more easily than with traditional transparent watercolour.
Acrylic paint uses an acrylic polymer binder. It can be used in thin washes or thicker applications, dries relatively quickly, and becomes water-resistant after drying. Oil paint uses drying oil as a binder and usually remains workable for longer, supporting slow blending and layered glazes. Egg tempera uses egg, traditionally egg yolk, as a binder and dries quickly, favouring careful layering and hatching rather than long wet blending.
Brushes, Knives, and Other Tools
The shape, size, stiffness, and loading of a brush influence the mark it makes. A large flat brush can cover broad areas. A pointed round brush can make thin-to-thick lines. A stiff brush can drag broken marks across texture. A soft brush can blend or lay smooth passages when the paint remains workable.
A palette knife is mainly used to mix paint on a palette, while a painting knife is designed for applying paint to a surface. Painting knives can spread thick paint, scrape back areas, make crisp edges, or press colours into one another.

Core Painting Techniques
A technique is useful when it supports what you want the painting to do. A smooth glaze can create depth or luminosity. A rough drybrush can suggest weathered surfaces. Thick impasto can make a stroke feel physical and energetic. No technique is automatically expressive; meaning comes from how you control it in context.
Washes: Flat, Graded, and Variegated
A wash is a fluid, relatively thin layer of paint. In transparent watercolour, a flat wash aims for even colour. A graded wash changes gradually from darker to lighter or from one colour towards another. A variegated wash allows two or more colours to move together while still remaining visibly different.
For a controlled wash, prepare enough mixture before beginning, work across the surface methodically, and avoid repeatedly brushing an area that is already beginning to dry.
Wet-on-Wet and Wet-on-Dry
In wet-on-wet painting, wet paint is placed into a wet or damp area. Edges spread and blend, so the method is useful for soft transitions, skies, reflections, and atmospheric effects. In wet-on-dry painting, paint is placed on a dry surface. Edges stay more controlled, making the method useful for details, shapes, and layered forms.
Glazing
A glaze is a thin transparent or translucent layer placed over a dry layer. Because lower layers remain partly visible, glazing can alter colour without completely covering what lies beneath. Repeated glazes can build optical depth and subtle colour shifts. The previous layer must be sufficiently dry for the medium being used, otherwise the layers may mix physically instead of producing a clear layered effect.
Scumbling and Drybrush
Scumbling places a thin, broken, often lighter layer over a dry darker layer so that parts of the underlayer remain visible. Drybrush uses a brush carrying relatively little paint, often dragged over the surface so that paint catches the raised texture. Both techniques can create broken colour, roughness, atmosphere, or surface detail.
Impasto
Impasto means applying paint thickly enough for brush or knife marks to stand up in visible relief. It can make light catch on the actual paint surface and can give a painting strong physical presence.
Palette-Knife Application and Scraping
A painting knife can spread thick paint in broad planes, press colours into one another, create ridges, cut narrow lines through wet paint, or scrape back an area. Scraping is not only a correction method; it can reveal underlayers and become part of the image.
Underpainting and Layering
An underpainting is an initial painted layer that establishes structure, value, temperature, or a general colour field before later layers are added. It may remain visible in the finished work or be almost completely covered. Layering lets you separate decisions: one stage can establish value, another can modify colour, and a final stage can sharpen focal details.
Edges, Marks, Texture, and Space
Painting techniques become more powerful when you control where they appear. A hard edge attracts attention because it gives a clear boundary. A soft edge can make a form recede or merge with its surroundings. A lost edge almost disappears when neighbouring shapes share a similar value or colour.
Mark-making includes dots, dashes, drips, strokes, scrapes, stains, and repeated patterns. Consider direction, scale, rhythm, pressure, and density. Repeated diagonal marks can suggest energy; broad horizontal marks can feel stable; irregular marks can create visual tension.
Texture can be actual, created by the physical surface, or implied, created by visual marks that suggest a texture without changing the surface much. Impasto produces actual texture, while carefully painted wood grain may create only the illusion of texture.
Planning a Painting
Before beginning a larger work, test ideas at small scale. A useful process is to create thumbnail compositions, a value study, colour notes, and a technique sample. These studies reduce guesswork while still leaving room for discovery.
Ask yourself:
- What should viewers notice first?
- Which value pattern supports that focal point?
- Which colour relationship supports the mood?
- Where should edges be hard, soft, or lost?
- Which technique best describes each surface or idea?
- Where should you simplify instead of adding detail?
Safe and Responsible Studio Practice
Use only teacher-approved materials. Keep paint away from food and drink, never point brushes with your mouth, wash hands after painting, and follow labels for pigments, mediums, and cleaners. Use good ventilation when a product label requires it. Do not pour paint, solvent, or unknown studio chemicals into a sink unless your local disposal rules and teacher explicitly allow it.
Protect tables and clothing, label shared containers, keep brush handles out of walkways, and clean tools according to the paint system you used. Good studio habits protect people, materials, and the quality of your artwork.
Looking at Paintings Like a Maker
When you analyse a painting, move from observation to interpretation. First describe what is visible: colour, value, edges, marks, texture, scale, composition, and surface. Then infer how the artist may have produced those effects. Finally explain how those technical choices influence mood, emphasis, space, or meaning.
A strong analysis connects evidence to an idea. Instead of writing "the colours are dramatic," explain which colours, which contrasts, where they occur, and what effect they create.
